32-pound bag wins Grand Lake tourney

Just as some competitors in the Bassmaster Classic predicted, Grand Lake pumped out some impressive weights today at the Nichols Marine Team Series season opener, including one bag that exceeded the final-day effort of Classic champ Edwin Evers.

Still, as was the case during the Classic, not everyone was able to figure out an effective pattern in the warming, clearing water.

A field of 272 boats showed up for the event – only 113 teams weighed fish – and the team of Heath Konkler and Justin Cooper took the win with 32.41 pounds, anchored by an 8.47-pound kicker. Even without that beast, they still would’ve edged the runner-up team of Ward Jones and Alan Hevener, who had 23.26 pounds, including a 6.99-pound brute.

A dozen fish weighing 6 pounds or more were brought to the scales.
