Brauer out front at stingy Amistad

Less than a quarter of the field (24 anglers) at the Lake Amistad Texas Rayovac Series weighed in a limit on day 1 Thursday and even fewer (23) cracked the 10-pound mark, a sign that fishing at the once-dynamic fishery is as tough as ever. Retired tour pro Denny Brauer, who now lives year round in Del Rio, Texas, set the early pace with a 17-01 stringer that included a 9 1/2-pound kicker.

Ray Hanselman, who guides at Amistad, is second with 15-10. Kevin Gressett is third with 14-07.

Here’s the top 10 after the first day:

1. Denny Brauer: 17-01

3. Kevin Gressett: 14-07
4 (tie). Brian Ankrum: 14-06
