Clear Lake not so hot

California's Clear Lake was ranked No. 2 on the 2014 Bassmaster list of the 100 top bass lakes, trailing only Sturgeon Bay at Lake Michigan. The bite at the renowned West Coast hawg factory is off right now, though – way off.

A story this week in the Lake County Record-Bee carried the headline "Bass Fishing Can't Get Any Worse." A 32-team ABA tournament last weekend produced only 60 fish and a recent local derby consisting of 12 anglers saw just four fish come to the scale.

Some locals theorize that the bass population is down, while others think the lake contains so many baitfish that the bass have no interest in baits, whether they're live or artificial.
