Midway through the Mississippi River Bassmaster Elite Series, it appeared as if Edwin Evers was destined to lose some of his lead in the Toyota Tundra B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year (AOY) race. He was in 23rd place after the day-2 weigh-in and Skeet Reese, his closest pursuer in the points chase, was in 15th.

That all changed on day 3, however, as Evers caught a stout 15-03 to move up 13 places and into the Top-12 cut. Meanwhile, Reese sacked just 10-12 to fall to 30th.

The end result was that Evers, who ended up finishing 11th, added 19 points to his AOY advantage and now holds a commanding 44-point bulge with two events remaining.

"I just landed a couple key bites that day – that was the whole difference," he said of day 3. "Getting a couple more of those 3 1/2-pounders really helped me out.

"That was the best day for it to happen and I was super-excited about it."

He popped a 3 1/2 on his second cast of the day with a War Eagle buzzbait.

"I lost a couple good ones on it after that, and I just kind of ran with it that morning when it was stormy. I fished a lot of water and kept covering new ground."

He spent the tournament in Pool 8 (the launch pool) and also threw a swim-jig and a frog.

The Sunline Strong Performer, which focuses on the angler who makes the most significant single-day move in the standings at each tour-level event, is brought to you by the great people at Sunline.
