It's been pretty similar to last year. The first day, I only fished about half a day because of wind and caught a couple of 4-pounders and a couple other keepers.

Yesterday I got serious and had a great day – a 6, a 5 and some 4s. The 6 was the biggest smallmouth of my life. It was huge, and it was just a super day, and I never even hit any of the stuff I hit last year. I don't know if that's smart or dumb, but I found a few new spots. I fished Canada a lot and really spent some time there yesterday.

Today I fished Dunkirk for the first time ever and caught three 3-pounders in 5 minutes, but I don't think I'll run all the way down there. I really haven't found anywhere there I can just pull up and load up – it's more one here and one there – so I don't have the confidence I can make the run, catch a big bag and then head back.

They're calling for west winds, so I'll pretty much let it flow, fish the areas I have confidence in, and let the weather dictate. I'm ready to drag if that's what it takes. Last year I caught them 200 yards out of the launch harbor and finished 3rd, so I've got some spots real close.

I think weights are going to be down from last year. They don't seem to be grouped up as well as they were last year. There'll be some of your bigger 22- to 24-pound bags, but I think the overall weights will be a little further down. Weather's going to tell everything. This place is so big, there's just so many variables that go into it.
