Jay Yelas – Practice

I think the fish are done spawning, but I haven't really gotten on a good post-spawn bite yet. That'll happen in the next few weeks and the rest of March. There's some fry around, but there are hardly any fish on beds. It's like they spawned 3 or 4 weeks ago and they're kind of in the funk between spawn and post-spawn.

So I haven't had a very good practice. I'm just hoping I can catch 12 or 13 pounds a day, maybe get into the cut and get a big one.

There are a lot of ways to catch fish, but it's just slow. And it's amazing – go to any other lake in the country in late-February and you'll catch all the fish up shallow.

Florida's a world of its own. South Carolina's not that far from here, and Alton Jones just won there with fish on a winter pattern. Eight hours south and the fish have been done spawning for a month. I'm sure there are still some fish that haven't spawned, but we're right in the lull between waves.

I kind of like it though, because if you get on something a little different, or one real good bite, it can propel you into the Top 10. I enjoy tournaments that are tough. It's definitely a challenge, and it's post-frontal. That usually makes it tougher, but who knows – maybe the fish will like that a little.
