Kentucky Lake Elite Series

John Murray – Competition
Thursday, June 4, 2009

> Day 1: 5, 17-09
> Day 2: 5, 16-10
> Total = 10, 34-03 (51st)

I caught 4 pounds more than I did last year, but I still missed the cut by an ounce. It was unbelievable fishing, though – yesterday was really good numbers-wise and today was a little slower. I probably caught 100 fish yesterday and 50 today.

I hooked a 6-pounder yesterday that threw the crankbait right at the boat, and that was the only big bite I had. I caught most of my fish on a 3/4-ounce Omega jig with a big crawdad trailer, and some Carolina-rigging a 10-inch Berkley PowerWorm.

I was thinking it would be a cruel joke if I barely missed the cut again. Last year I had a dead fish, but this year I didn't even have that excuse.

John Murray – practice
Wednesday, June 3, 2009

I probably caught 150 fish during practice, but only 20 or 30 keepers, and most of those were on the first day. I've got some areas where there seem to be a few more keepers, but I haven't caught hardly anything over 4 pounds.

I'll stick to some ridges with grass on them – I caught them a little better on those as opposed to the ones that are barren. It'll be a lot of cranking and a lot of big worms. You can catch them doing anything you want, but you need to figure out a way to catch the big ones.

The weather's about to change and that should help. The last few days have been calm with no current and the big ones should be about ready to chew.
