Remitz Still In Control

Last week's Smith Mt. Bassmaster Elite Series didn't change the face of the BassFan Rookie of the Year race near the top.

Derek Remitz finished 56th at Smith Mt., and his season is now about 50–50 (three Top 10s, three finishes out of the Top 50), but he maintains his lead over 2nd-place Bryan Thrift. However, his lead's a little shorter at 16 1/2 points (vs. 19 points prior to Smith Mt.).

Thrift, an FLW Tour rookie, didn't fish Smith Mt. and he remains 2nd. He has two regular-season events left this (one's this week at the Potomac), plus the Forrest Wood Cup if he qualifies.

South Carolina's Casey Ashley won Smith Mt. and retains his 3rd-place position. He does gain some ground on Remitz though, and now trails him by 20 1/2 points. Both he and Remitz are the only rookies to win an event this year.

An 85th at Smith Mt. moves Scott Campbell down a spot to 6th.

FLW Tour rookie Andy Montgomery, affected by movement around him, falls two spots to 8th.

James Kennedy finished 50th at Smith Mt., which moves him up three spots to 11th.

About the ROY Race
The BassFan Rookie of the Year Race/Award recognizes the best rookie in all of tour-level professional fishing for the current year or season. Unlike the league rookie races, only true rookies are eligible: To qualify as a rookie for the BassFan race, a tour angler cannot have fished the pro (boater) side of any Bassmaster or FLW tour/series-level event before.

  • BassFan Rookie of the Year Race points are calculated using a methodology loosely similar to the BassFan World Rankings (points based on finish with bonuses given for winning and finishing high). Only regular-season events count. Championships do not.

  • The BassFan Rookie of the Year Race was created in 2002 as the first rookie race in professional bass fishing. Like Rookie of the Year awards in all sports, it recognizes top-performing newcomers to the professional ranks.
