Ashley Closes On Remitz

Three events factor into the updated BassFan Rookie of the Year Race standings – the Champlain Bassmaster Elite Series, Erie/Niagara Bassmaster Elite Series, and Detroit River FLW Tour. The FLW Tour regular season is now complete, so FLW Tour rookies have no more opportunities to move up, which means it's likely a BASS rookie will win the title.

Derek Remitz remains the leader. The Minnesotan-turned-Alabaman finished 104th at Champlain (four spots from dead-last), then 66th at Erie/Niagara. He previously led by nearly 24 points, but the two soft finishes cut his lead to about 17 points.

South Carolina pro Casey Ashley, who finished 82nd at Champlain and 60th at Erie/Niagara, remains in 2nd, but as noted, he's drawn closer to Remitz.

New York rookie Matt Sphar comes out of BASS's northern swing looking strong. Home-state finishes of 23rd at Champlain and 14th at Erie/Niagara move him up six spots to 3rd, where he trails Ashley by 6 points and Remitz by 23.

BASS rookie Jason Williamson, of South Carolina, notched his third Top 50 in a row at Erie/Niagara and climbs two spots to 4th.

Bryan Hudgins, who was previously 4th, drops three spots to 7th after a 57th and 87th on the BASS northern swing.

Bryan Thrift is currently the highest FLW Tour rookie in the race. Prior to the three events he was 3rd, but a 160th-place finish at the Detroit River drops him five spots to 8th.

Two more events remain that affect the Rookie standings – the Potomac Elite Series and Toho Elite Series.

The upcoming Forrest Wood Cup does not affect the race, but Thrift is the only FLW Tour rookie who'll fish it as a pro. He finished 28th in the 2007 FLW Tour points to earn his berth. Matt Arey, Monte Knight and Jim Short qualified for the Cup as co-anglers.

About the ROY Race
The BassFan Rookie of the Year Race/Award recognizes the best rookie in all of tour-level professional fishing for the current year or season. Unlike the league rookie races, only true rookies are eligible: To qualify as a rookie for the BassFan race, a tour angler cannot have fished the pro (boater) side of any Bassmaster or FLW tour/series-level event before.

  • BassFan Rookie of the Year Race points are calculated using a methodology loosely similar to the BassFan World Rankings (points based on finish with bonuses given for winning and finishing high). Only regular-season events count. Championships do not.

  • The BassFan Rookie of the Year Race was created in 2002 as the first rookie race in professional bass fishing. Like Rookie of the Year awards in all sports, it recognizes top-performing newcomers to the professional ranks.
