Baseball To Bass For Top 2 Rooks

With three events in the books - the Toho FLW Tour, plus Harris Chain and Toho Bassmaster Elite Series – the BassFan Rookie of the Year race is heating up. Here's a look at how things settle out after the three events.

> Randy Hadden of Jacksonville, Fla., a former pitcher in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, rides the strength of his 10th-place finish at the Toho FLW Tour to maintain a wide lead (currently at about 21 points). Next up for Hadden is the unforgiving Lewis Smith, where tough fishing and crowds could run some interference.

> Texan Billy Brewer, an ex-major-league hurler, sits in 2nd. Brewer spent 7 years in the bigs with the Royals and Phillies, and finished 45th then 34th in his first two Elite Series events. He next faces Falcon, which promises to be an all-out slugfest.

> Currently in 3rd is FLW Tour rookie David Lawson of Kentucky. He finished a respectable 39th at his Toho debut and trails Hadden by 28 1/2 points.

> Florida's Jason McKinnie, also an FLW Tour rookie, finished 42nd at Toho and is currently 4th.

> Texan Stephen Johnston (44th at the Toho FLW) and Oklahoma's Jay Fuller (80th and 24th in the first two BASS events) are currently tied for 5th.

About the ROY Race
The BassFan Rookie of the Year Race/Award recognizes the best rookie in all of tour-level professional fishing for the current year or season. Unlike the league rookie races, only true rookies are eligible: To qualify as a rookie for the BassFan race, a tour angler cannot have fished the pro (boater) side of any Bassmaster or FLW tour/series-level event before.

  • BassFan Rookie of the Year Race points are calculated using a methodology loosely similar to the BassFan World Rankings (points based on finish with bonuses given for winning and finishing high). Only regular-season events count. Championships do not.

  • The BassFan Rookie of the Year Race was created in 2002 as the first rookie race in professional bass fishing. Like Rookie of the Year awards in all sports, it recognizes top-performing newcomers to the professional ranks.
