BassFan World Rankings PRESENTED BY Under Armor

Updated: 3/7/2005

2 Debuts And VanDam Back In

Following are the State Farm World Rankings after last week's Clarks Hill Bassmaster Tour event. Top 10 highlights:

> 1 and 2 -- Skeet Reese is still No. 1 in the world, but Greg Hackney has closed the gap. Reese finished 65th at Clarks Hill, his worst finish of the season by about 30 places. Hackney finished 23rd, and is now within 2 points of being No. 1 in the world.

> 3 -- Aaron Martens moves up a big five spots to 3rd in the world after finishing 22nd at Clarks Hill. That finish plus a 14th at Guntersville and a 6th earlier this year have helped him to his highest rank since 2001.

> 4 -- David Walker moves up three spots to 4th in the world even though he only finished 55th at Clarks Hill.

> 5 -- Kevin VanDam finished 12th last week, which appropriately knocks him back into the Top 10 in 5th -- from 12th in the world. That 5th-place ranking is the second-lowest rank VanDam has ever had.

> 6 -- It's all sixes for Marty Stone. He's finished 26th, 36th, 16th and 36th (last week), which have helped him attain his highest rank yet: 6th.

> 7 -- A 71st hurts Kelly Jordon and he falls one spot, to 7th.

> 8 -- Similarly, a 142nd helps Dean Rojas fall four spots to 8th.

> 9 -- Florida's Terry Scroggins has two Top 20s (including a 19th last week) and no finishes worse than 40th this year. He leads the Bassmaster Tour points, and debuts in the Top 10 this week at 9th, up 10 spots from 19th.

> 10 -- Kentucky's Kevin Wirth is having a good season on top of a good one last year, and also debuts in the Top 10 at 10th.

Other notable movement:

> Brent Chapman has two good finishes on the FLW Tour so far this year, but isn't doing as well on the Bassmaster Tour. He falls out of the Top 10, to 11th.

> Ron Shuffield has quietly climbed to 12th in the world.

> Takahiro Omori finished an uncharacteristic dead last (154th) at Clarks Hill and that causes him to fall out of the Top 10, to 13th in the world.

> Similarly, Gerald Swindle finished 125th and drops from 3rd in the world to 14th. A good finish at the next event should cause Swindle and Omori to swing back up in the rankings, a la VanDam this week.

> Missouri's Mark Tucker finished 10th at Clarks Hill, and that helps him jump a big 20 spots to 16th in the world.

> After two finishes worse than 100th (both in Florida), Davy Hite has rebounded with an 8th and an 18th and is now 17th in the world.

> Alton Jones hasn't been fishing well this season, and this perennial Top 5 in the world angler is now 18th.

> Missouri's Brian Snowden has been fishing well and is now 20th in the world.

> Big moves in the 20s: Mike Iaconelli (45th to 25th); Jimmy Mize (46th to 28th); Scott Rook (43rd to 29th); and Tommy Biffle (41st to 30th).

> At Clarks Hill, Mark Davis had his best finish so far this season -- but it was an 81st. He drops again in the World Rankings, this time to 33rd, by far his worst rank ever.

> Clarks Hill winner Mike Reynolds moves up 14 places, from 99th to 85th in the world. Reynolds has been fishing well this year, but last year's finishes are hurting him in the rankings.

This week FLW Tour anglers fish their third event of the season on the Ouachita River out of Louisiana.

About the World Rankings

The BassFan World Rankings were created in 2001 to answer a simple question - who is the best professional bass angler in the world? - and to give fishing fans a way to track their favorite pros, as well as to show the non-fishing world that consistently catching fish isn't "just luck".

While the three leagues - Major League Fishing, B.A.S.S. and FLW - have their own single-year point races (called Angler of the Year races, which are not rankings), and "power rankings" have occasionally up in the sport, these are not World Rankings. World Rankings in all professional sports are complex, multi-year statistical endeavors simply because that's the only way to accurately and fairly show consistent performance over time.

Until BassFan did it, no one produced a statistical, multi-year ranking system for professional bass fishing using results from the top tours. These are the MLF Bass Pro Tour, Bassmaster Elite Series and FLW Tour. The BassFan World Rankings will also include results from other competitive (i.e., non-exhibition) tournaments that feature the world's top pros.

How

Here's a brief overview of what's involved in calculating the BassFan World Rankings. (For confidentiality reasons, the proprietary methodology won't be discussed in detail.)

  • The rankings are based on angler performance in top-level Bass Pro Tour, B.A.S.S. and FLW events. These events are the top competitions in the sport and attract the top fishermen.
  • Events are weighted based on strength of field (calculated using the BassFan World Rank of everyone in the field) and size of field, meaning that it's easier to do well in smaller-field events than larger-field ones.
  • Bonus points are given for winning and for placing in the top 10 percent in all regular-season events. No bonuses are given for league Angler of the Year awards, points or standings because that data is already accounted for in the World Rankings methodology.
  • Championships are treated differently than regular-season tournaments.
  • The BassFan World Rankings methodology ensures that anglers who fish only one circuit are not at a disadvantage versus anglers who fish more than one. Rather, anglers who fish more events have more chances to do better (or worse) than anglers who fish fewer events. A simple example: six 5th-place finishes are better than three, and four 100th-place finishes are worse than two.
  • The rankings use data from the current and immediately prior years only (a rolling 2-calendar year cycle).
  • The rankings are not an indication of who is/was the best bass angler ever. That is not a World Rankings. It's a list.
  • As with all World Rankings in all sports, the methodology used in the BassFan World Rankings calculation will change over time based on feedback from interested parties.
  • Bassmaster Opens, FLW Series (formerly Stren/EverStart) and Bass Fishing League (BFL) tournament data are not included in the BassFan World Rankings because these are "minor-league" or "triple-A" events.
