Chris Jones didn’t seem bothered that 191 of his closest fishing buddies paid a visit to his home fishery last week.

He had a plan for how to attack the Arkansas River near Muskogee, Okla., and all he needed was … a little good fortune.

That came in the form of being placed in the last flight of boats on day 1. The longer day on the water allowed him to make the long run to Kerr Reservoir, where he caught a respectable 12-10. Faced with a shorter day on last Friday, he maximized his time and plucked 11-03 to claim a spot among the 12 finalists.

That set him up for another trip to Kerr on the final day when roared back with a 19-00 to overcome a 4-04 deficit and win the first Bassmaster Central Open of 2020. Jones’ 42-13 total over three days was enough to give him a six-ounce margin over John Garrett, who suffered a 2-pound penalty on the final day for making a cast with six fish in his livewell.

For Jones, it was career Open victory number two with both triumphs coming on the Arkansas River and both wins triggering automatic berths in the following year’s Bassmaster Classic.

“When you win one, it feels like luck, but wining two, not a lot of guys have made two Classics through the Opens,” he said. “This just proves the first one was not a fluke deal.”

Jones, who hails from Bokoshe, Okla., was prepared for just about any scenario, but with the water levels stabilizing after heavy rains doused the region a couple weeks before the event, he relied on a textbook pattern on the river – combing water willow (bank grass) with up to three feet of water in it with a swim jig.

“My confidence was on cloud nine,” Jones said. “I knew it would be a grind. The decisions I made on days 1 and 2 were key in terms of time management. I knew 11 to 12 pounds a day would probably make the cut and with the storms coming Saturday, it could be anybody’s game. I wasn’t too stressed about days 1 and 2. My goal was to just survive until day 3 and then try to win.”

Practice

Despite his vast amount of experience on the river, Jones put in a solid week of time on the water prior to the tournament. He wanted to explore all aspects in light of the change in conditions in recent weeks.

“With all the flooding we’d had, a lot of stuff had changed,” he said.

It was also instructive for him in terms of navigation. Some areas he’d been able to run through in previous years were sealed off, so he had to develop new trails.

The extended practice sessions allowed him to revisit some key isolated stretches or pieces of structure and figure out the most efficient ways to target them.

“I just figured out how to line them up and the right casts to make,” he said. “That allowed me to make them into one-cast deals rather than figuring it out during the tournament.”

Finally, he got to witness the transition in water clarity, especially in the Kerr Pool, which played such a critical role in his victory.

“It had the perfect amount of stain on days 1 and 3,” he said. “Our body of water had gone through torrential rains and mud up until Monday, but then it got clean in that area. I think guys practiced there, but didn’t catch any and wrote it off. That helped the cause, too.”

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 12-10
> Day 2: 5, 11-03
> Day 3: 5, 19-00
> Total = 15, 42-13

Jones drew boat number 188 on day 1, which allowed him to lock down into the Kerr Pool and made an additional 30-mile run to his key areas.

He tallied about seven keepers and wound up with 12-10 after absorbing a four-ounce dead penalty.

“I knew I was in good shape,” he said. “I figured anything over 12 pounds would keep me in it.”

With a 1 p.m. check-in time on day 2, Jones knew the journey to Kerr was out of the question. That allowed him to move around the Muskogee pool and target “off-the-wall stuff and things that guys wouldn’t beat up,” he said. Maximizing his time – not locking gave him a roughly six hours to fish – was another key.

“I figured another 11 or 12 pounds would be enough to stay in it,” he added. “I fished a little creek and flipped and fished slow for the most part.”

He mixed in a spinnerbait and some flipping to compliment the swim jig and came away with 11-03 to move into 8th place entering the final day.

“I lost a 3 1/2-pounder right before weigh-in that hurt, but I still made it,” he said.

The conditions on day 3 played into Jones’ hands with clouds and rain.

“It was the perfect scenario for a swim jig bite,” he said.

He returned to Kerr, but knew he’d need a bag bigger than what he’d caught each of the first two days to give himself any hope to rallying from eighth place. He also needed to do it in roughly four hours given the 2 o’clock check-in.

“No pressure with only four hours to catch ‘em,” he quipped.

While others near the top of the leaderboard wound up fishing close to each other, Jones fished some of the same areas from day 1 and new spots due to the shift in wind direction.

“I didn’t fish anything where I knew I’d only catch keepers,” he said. “I knew the only way to beat them was to catch a mega bag and that’s what I did.”

He estimated making casts on 25 to 30 stretches and combing the bank grass with a frog and swim jig.

“Anything that had wind on it or where I’d caught big ones in the past, those spots got in the rotation,” he added. “They were in anywhere from zero to three feet of water. They were most on the outer edges and when it got windy they’d position on the points in the grass and under the isolated mats. It got to the point where I could almost call my shot.”

His 19-pound stringer was the second-biggest of the event and it was anchored by a 5 1/2-pounder. He also had a 4-13. Without the change in weather conditions, though, he doesn’t think he could’ve pulled off the rally.

“If you didn’t have the right weather, I would’ve caught 11 or 12 pounds,” he said. “It was the perfect storm for me to catch the leaders.”

Winning Gear Notes

> Swim jig gear: 7’4” heavy-action unnamed casting rod, Bass Pro Shops Johnny Morris Platinum Signature Series casting reel (8.0:1 ratio), 60-pound Vicious Fishing braided line, 3/8-oz. prototype Booyah swim jig (white, black/blue chartreuse), 3.25” YUM Craw Chunk trailer (pearl, black neon).

> On day 2, a Booyah Covert spinnerbait and a YUM Bad Mama accounted for a couple keepers.

> The swim jig, which Jones says is likely to be introduced at the Bassmaster Classic next spring, is different in that it seems to get hung up less than other versions and it won’t roll over on a fast retrieve.
