Even after a 2 1/2-month hiatus and on a lake he admits to not have a complete grasp of, Jacob Wheeler seemed right at home and back in the swing of things at the Pickwick Lake Central FLW Series last week.

The top-ranked angler in the most recent BassFan World Rankings, Wheeler amassed 56-08 to beat Buddy Gross by 5 1/2 pounds for his second win of 2020.

Wheeler, who three years ago relocated to Harrison, Tenn., has tried his best to get acclimated with the various TVA lakes and their seasonal patterns. The breadth of his tournament experience at Pickwick was limited to a 96th-place showing in the 2014 FLW Tour event there and a 41st in the 2016 FLW Tour. He said he’s come a long way as an angler since then.

“I’ve more so learned from my mistakes,” he said. “I’m older and wiser and understanding a few more things. I’ve started to understand a few more things about the lake, but I’m by no means a Pickwick expert. I definitely wanted to understand more and each year I’m able to learn more about each fishery and how fish adapt. It’s part of the progression of learning as an angler.”

He thinks his partial ignorance actually was a key ingredient to his win. With the current flowing so hard during the tournament, it didn’t allow the fish to group up near the main river channel like they traditionally do.

“The current was so strong and those fish wanted to get out and they wanted to get grouped up but couldn’t,” he said. “They were on the sides of places and that made them tougher to catch. They’d get behind a stump and the bait would sweep by them, so it made it hard to present a bait.

“I think that’s part of the reason why some of the locals didn’t do great. They just were not set up on traditional places. They were definitely on places last week that they never probably get on and that played into my hands of someone not that familiar with the lake.”

Here’s an overview of how Wheeler captured his first FLW Series victory.

Practice

Wheeler visited Pickwick for a couple days the week before the tournament, then put in three days of practice immediately before competition began. His main objective was to learn how fish would position in various current scenarios.

“I was just constantly looking for new stuff and trying to learn the lake,” he said. “During my first trip, there was a lot less current. The fish were pulling out (toward the ledges), but they weren’t out there good. They were just set up better. When I came back, their positioning had totally changed because the current was so strong.”

While he built his tournament game plan around offshore ledge-fishing, he also knew with the fishing pressure many of the known locales would get, he needed some fallback options as well.

“I also knew the shad spawn would play and I caught a few in practice that way,” he said. “I could catch 12 to 14 pounds in the morning in practice but that was starting before when takeoff would’ve been, so I knew it couldn’t be a big-bag thing, but it would be a player.”

He didn’t tangle with any big fish – a 3 1/2-pounder was his biggest – but winning practice wasn’t his priority.

“I didn’t fish a whole lot because I wanted to see what my graphs were telling me,” he said.

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 18-02
> Day 2: 5, 20-11
> Day 3: 5, 17-11
> Total = 15, 56-08

Wheeler was boat number 139 on day 1, which he knew would prevent him from having the prime choice of his starting spot. He adjusted accordingly and was still able to cobble together an 18-pound stringer, which he’d later find out wasn’t all that bad.

“I knew I couldn’t get to the places I wanted to get at,” he said, “so rather than rush to my favorite place and be disappointed when I got there because other boats were on it, I worked around and let the day come to me. I took what I could get and went from there.”

He capitalized on an extended foggy and cloudy period to start the day, which prolonged the shad spawn and gave him a chance to break the ice and get some fish in the boat. From there, he started to rotate through his offshore spots, some he thought might not have been located by other anglers and some he knew to be community spots.

“When you don’t know a body of water well and you don’t know all of the community holes, it’s interesting because I thought some places I had were pretty sneaky and they had people on them,” he said. “Other spots I thought were community holes not many boats were on them.”

He benefitted from a couple flurries through the rest of the day and caught an estimated 30 keepers, topped by a 5-pounder. He admittedly wasn’t totally prepared for the transition back to the traditional five-fish limit format.

“I only brought one Rapala scale with me and that day I caught a ton of fish and I wind up dropping it in the livewell,” he said. “I didn’t have a cull beam either, so I was just eyeballing fish after that.”

While he had a bevy of rods at his feet, equipped with the typical array of ledge-fishing offerings, he relied mostly on a Rapala DT-20.

“It’s more like the Shad Rap of all the deeper-diving baits,” he said. “It has one rattle, but it’s real subtle.”

With a more favorable boat number on day 2, Wheeler was able to focus on the offshore spots right off the bat.

While the DT-20 was productive, he began mixing in a big spinnerbait along with a Texas-rigged soft stickworm and a variety of other baits.

“My first cast was always with the DT-20,” he said. “If I could get them fired up on that, you can catch them on every throw. Each place was different, though. There were a couple places where they wouldn’t touch a crankbait. If they wouldn’t eat the spinnerbait, then I’d throw the worm.”

He caught fish in different depths throughout the tournament, from 8 feet out to 20-plus.

“I started making stops here and there and picked one off,” he added. “I made a progression like that and just mixed things up.”

His 20-11 on day 2 came from four different spots, he said.

He entered the final day one ounce behind John Murray, but he said it simply felt good to have a solid performance in his first tournament in more than two months.

“I was just happy to have the opportunity to compete because these tournaments are so much fun, but it was also another opportunity to win,” he said. “It felt good to make the top 10 and get some momentum before going to the Bass Pro Tour Heavy Hitters. I knew I needed another good day.”

He figured cloudy skies in the morning would aid those focused on the shad spawn in the morning, but if it were sunny and calm, that would be to his benefit. When he got up, he noticed a clear sky and that gave him a shot of confidence even before he launched the boat.

When he got to his first spot – the same spot he started day 2 at – he was joined by Brent Anderson, another finalist. Anderson ceded the spot to Wheeler for the first few hours and Wheeler ultimately pulled three keepers off it.

“It was not as easy as the day before,” he said. “I threw the DT-20 and dragged a worm. Those suckers were so hard to get to bite.”

He then moved on and targeted some isolated structure and also graphed new areas. By 9 a.m., he figured he had 11 pounds. Additional boat and fishing pressure added to the challenge and with check in at 1:30, he redoubled his efforts offshore.

“I got on a place around 11 a.m. and hit a flurry to get up to 14 pounds,” he said. “I knew that still wasn’t enough.”

He moved around again and found a couple more schools and caught his two biggest fish of the day – a 4 1/2 and a 4-pounder – on the DT-20 to bump his weight up to 17-11.
