John Cox couldn’t have concocted a better start to what will be the busiest season of his professional angling career.

By leading wire-to-wire to win the Sam Rayburn Reservoir FLW Pro Circuit season opener last weekend, Cox collected his second $100,000 FLW payday in the last eight months and fourth tournament victory since the start of 2019, which makes it hard to imagine him going winless in the 16 other tournaments he’s scheduled to compete in this year.

“It couldn’t have gone any better,” Cox said. “Winning the first one of the year, I’ve seen guys do it the last 10 years and I never got to experience it. I was like, ‘Man it must be so nice to start season off like that.’ I’ve seen it so many times. Those guys just go through the year and fish so much better. It’s so crazy that we have one down.”

What’s more is that never did Cox believe he would prevail in Texas in January when water temperatures dropped into the 50s during the tournament. This was Cox’s fourth look at Rayburn in a multi-day tournament since 2012. Last January, he finished 32nd there in the season opener.

“It’s not in my wheelhouse,” he said. “I would’ve loved to just get a check.”

He got a check, alright. The six-figure variety, thanks to a 65-15 total that outdistanced Texan Tommy Dickerson by 2 1/2 pounds.

Here are some details about how Cox kicked off the year with a win at Rayburn.

Practice

Cox said that virtually nothing he learned from last year’s FLW Tour event at Rayburn came into play during this tournament. The water last year was so much higher and spread the fish (and field) out considerably more.

“It was a completely different lake,” he said. “Last year, it was miles back into the woods and I tried to get into some ponds. I missed some opportunities back then.”

This time around, he was expecting the lake to produce much better than it did, but he attributes that to the intense fishing pressure it’s been receiving lately.

“I was really surprised how poorly it fished compared to what we thought,” he added. “It was getting hammered. The fishing pressure was incredible. A lot of my better luck was away from everybody, not even on prime stuff either. Maybe it was just something that hadn’t seen a cast in a couple weeks.”

Cox said he was unable to get his boat off the trailer on the first morning of practice due to the ramp he launched at being so shallow. After he finally got it launched, the motor wouldn’t start. Upon further investigation at the service yard, it appeared that a rodent had gnawed through some wires. Once repaired, Cox had limited daylight remaining so he opted to drive to a ramp up the river and check an area up there.

“I got three bites on a set of trees and that wound up being the place I caught them on day 4,” he said. “So just going up there turned out to be a huge factor for me because I was just going to dump in on the lower end and fish down there that day. I didn’t realize until later how important that day would be.”

He said the water temps were in the low 60s at the start of the week, but bouts of cold rain pushed it down into the 50s before it perked back up by the weekend.

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 21-07
> Day 2: 5, 18-12
> Day 3: 5, 13-03
> Day 4: 5, 12-09
> Total = 20, 65-15

Cox used the early part of day 1 of the tournament as a continuation of practice as he sought out fresh vegetation. After compiling roughly 10 pounds early on, he found a creek with some healthy hydrilla in about 6 feet of water.

With a small, flat-side crankbait tied on, he culled everything out in 45 minutes and sat atop the leaderboard with 21-07, which included a pair of five-pounders.

“I got in there late in the day on day 1 and found a sweet spot,” he said. “I really thought I could ride that spot the way it was acting because they just kept coming. Plus, Greg Bohannan was in the same creek about 500 yards farther back. I figured we’d found the right area. It was the greenest, freshest hydrilla. It was perfect.”

And over the first two days, Cox caught all of his weight (40-03) there, making countless casts toward a void in the grass.

“I just sat on that hydrilla and made the same cast over and over,” he said. “The males would come through and I’d catch two pretty quick. Then after 30 minutes I’d go back. Then the females came in and I caught some bigger ones. Each time, though, it was like they came in in pairs.”

When his key area drew increased attention from other anglers on day 3, Cox had to activate Plan B.

“That spot got popular and it had no time to rest,” he said. “I waited as long as I could before going into scramble mode.”

He picked off two keepers on a vibrating jig and another on a jig. He came back toward the launch area early in the afternoon and fished rock points and banks in an effort to get something going. Eventually, he rounded out his limit with two key keepers caught off laydowns. His 13-03 stringer kept him in the lead, but his advantage had been reduced to 12 ounces over Corey Neece.

Cox ran to his hydrilla spot to start the final day, but left with nothing. His first keeper came on a vibrating jig and then he ran up the river where he caught three out of the set of bushes he found in practice. He went back to the hydrilla and got skunked again before finishing off the day by catching his last keeper out of a laydown close to takeoff. His 12-09 effort was his lightest stinger of the week, but it was more than enough to salt away his fifth career win on the FLW Tour or Pro Circuit.

“It was complete junk-fishing and randomness,” he said of the final day. “It was unbelievable. You look back and say, ‘How does that happen?’ It’s probably one of my best wins ever.”

Winning Pattern Notes

> Cox said running to the warmer, dirtier water on day 4 was the pivotal decision of the tournament for him.

“The first two days, the water was clean and warmer, but we had some cold rain Saturday night and the water seemed to get colder on the last day,” he said. “That made me want to go to the river to the dirty water even more. When I got there, it was two degrees warmer and a little dirtier. That was a key decision. Even though they were only 2 1/2-pounders, it was a decision where it was getting late and I was going to run back toward take-off. I knew I would be kicking myself for not going up there even to make a couple throws.

“The other part about running it is I didn’t know how to run it, so I just straight lined it and hoped I didn’t hit any timber. The way my boat is set up my motor sits up higher and when the jackplate is as high as it’ll go, there’s only four inches of skeg below the boat.”
