The 2019 tournament season was a great one for Bryan New. If he’s to make 2020 even better, he’s off to a good start.

New, who won the American Bass Anglers (ABA) Ray Scott Championship last April then finished third at the BFL All-American the following month before winning a BFL three-day regional in October to clinch a berth in the 2020 All-American, kicked off the new season with what he calls the most significant accomplishment of his career. That’s saying something considering he won the FLW Cup as a co-angler in 2014 and the FLW Tour co-angler of the year title in 2016.

New doesn’t have a lengthy track record in Florida, but he was a quick study at the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes last week in cruising to victory in the opener on the Bassmaster Eastern Open schedule. New popped 21-00 on day 1, made the top-12 cut with 13-07 on day 2 before sewing up the win with a 15-01 limit on the final day.

“It’s gotta be the best accomplishment so far,” said New, who added that he signed up for this year’s Opens “to have options” for the future. “I won the Ray Scott championship last year, which was $100K plus. No offense, but that wasn’t the same level of competition. That tournament was easy for me. Once I figured it out, I didn’t have to work. This tournament, I had to work for it.”

He topped a field of 225 boats that featured a slew of former FLW Tour pros vying for 2021 Elite Series invitations along with a number of current Elite Series competitors. A win like this, he says, does wonders for his confidence heading into the rest of the season. It also clinched him a berth in the 2021 Bassmaster Classic (provided he competes in the remainder of the Eastern Opens).

“It’s just great,” he said. “It’s as high as it’s been. I’ve made a lot of changes in my life in the last 12 to 18 months and over the last year, everything seems to have been ‘Bryan Thrift’ status. Not to the same caliber, but I only had one or two bad tournaments. I’ve won three big ones in less than a year. I have never won or made this kind of money and I’ve never damn sure had this kind of money. It gives you a little break where you don’t have to worry so hard about everything.

“I made the Classic – that’s pretty bad ass,” he added. “I hope to do well enough in the next three to qualify for the Elites. I’m also fishing the Southern FLW Series and have the All-American at Hartwell. I have a lot of big stuff coming and I’m ready to do it. You can’t start your year any better than I just did. Hopefully, I can keep it rolling.”

Practice

New’s only previous experience at the Kissimmee Chain came as a co-angler during the 2015 FLW Tour stop there, which was won by JT Kenney. His plans before arriving for practice was to target offshore grass beds and explore patches of lily pads while also keeping tabs on spawning areas in the event of a warming trend.

When he arrived in central Florida, it was chilly and the wind had been blowing pretty consistently for several days. He recalled catching just three bass on the first day of practice. It was a slow go on days 2 and 3. On his fourth practice day, which was the day before competition began, he began to flip pads more.

He fished until 9:30 a.m. that morning and generated several bites along various stretches, shaking them all off.

“At that point, I knew I had a chance,” he said. “Flipping pads was my mindset going in and if I don’t lose any, I’d have a chance at a big bag. The weather started to get right and the tournament was getting closer. I started getting some bites and that helped my confidence.”

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 21-00
> Day 2: 5, 13-07
> Day 3: 5, 15-01
> Total = 15, 49-08

New was boat number 204 on day 1 so he knew he needed to stay in Lake Toho to start the day before locking through to go to Lake Kissimmee.

“I needed to stop on something first instead of locking,” he said.

His first stop was a wad of offshore hydrilla and it paid off with a couple keepers, including a 5 1/2-pounder on a square-bill crankbait. He stuck around for a while longer, then headed to the lock. When he got to Kissimmee, he endured a four-hour lull after missing one and losing one on his initial stop.

“I had to do something different,” he said.

With the wind blowing out of the south, he made a move to the southern end of the lake where he had developed some confidence in practice. He caught a 4-pounder on a floating prop bait then finished his limit with a 1 1/2-pounder and a 4-plus flipping shallow mats.

With a check-in time of 5:15 p.m., he made it back through the lock with 45 minutes to spare so he returned to his offshore area in Toho and culled a couple more times, highlighted by another 4-pounder to push his stringer up to 21-00 for the day.

On day 2, he opted to stay on Toho to start, cranking the same offshore grass that he hit twice on day 1.

“It was every cast until 9:14, then at 9:15 nothing,” he said. “It was like I’d caught every fish there.”

He kept at it for another 45 minutes before opting to bounce around. He’d boxed about 13 pounds, which he figured would clinch him a spot in the top 12 for day 3.

“I wasn’t going to risk anything,” he said. “So I stayed in Toho all day and junk-fished trying to catch big ones. I just fished whatever felt right. I flipped mats and got up shallow near some arrowheads. I threw a fluke around, but didn’t get any bites on it.”

New entered the final day three pounds back of day-2 leader John Hunter Jr., another former FLW Tour co-angler of the year who’s done stints on the Elite Series and FLW Tour.

New figured catching 12 pounds on Friday was realistic for what he’d been fishing and with winds expected to build through the day the other competitors who were targeting pads and other offshore spots could have it tough.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a big bag when it blows like that in Florida,” New said. “You can’t do it for several reasons. You can’t run around and it positions the fish differently.”

He got an earlier start than the first two days and he returned to his starting spot for a third straight day. The crankbait bite didn’t fire, so he relied on plastic worms then mixed in a jerkbait, which produced a 6-pounder and helped him bag a limit within 30 minutes.

Soon after, he culled to get to about 14 pounds. At 8:20 in the morning, he opted to lock through and head to Kissimmee. He fished the protected side of the lake to get out of the wind and caught a few that didn’t help him.

“I couldn’t get comfortable,” he said. “I wasted about two hours. I knew I shouldn’t have been doing it, but I was fishing for one or two bites. Eventually, I gave up on it and went to another area.”

He then caught a 2-05 that culled a 1-13. By then, he focused on planning the rest of the day. He wanted two hours at the end of competition to return to Toho’s offshore grass.

Upon returning to Toho, he had one bite, but he missed it. He sensed it could come back to haunt him.

“I did all I could do,” he said. “I had no regrets. I learned a lot. It was a good showing in my first B.A.S.S. tournament. I figured second, third or fourth would be good.”

Then he began chatting with other finalists and discovered many of them struggled, including Hunter, who caught just one 12-ounce bass on the final day. New logged the final day’s big bag at 15-03 and wound up beating Joshua Stracner by 4-06.

“Everybody else struggled because of the conditions,” he said.

New added that had he had a better boat number on day 1, he likely wouldn’t have won because he would not have stayed in Toho to start the day and he would not have discovered the place he ultimately fished all three days.

“If I’m boat 90 on day 1, I would’ve locked first thing and never knew the potential of the place I caught ‘em at,” he said.

Winning Gear Notes

> Cranking gear: 7’ medium-heavy Fitzgeral Fishing Bryan Thrift Signature Series square-bill casting rod, Abu Garcia Revo Winch casting reel, 15-pound P-Line Tactical fluorocarbon, Greenfish Tackle Fat G2 (High Rock shad).

> New said he could get the Fat G2 to dive to roughly five feet on the 15-pound line, which worked perfectly where he was fishing since it was about six feet deep. “It’s balsa so it floats high and I was able to snatch it out of the grass pretty easily,” he said.

> Prop bait gear: 7’ heavy-action Fitzgerald Fishing Stunner HD casting rod, Abu Garcia Revo STX casting reel (7.1:1 ratio), 30-pound P-Line TCB 8 braided line, 20-pound P-Line Original monofilament leader, Greenfish Tackle Tat (foil gill).
