Teigen Made The Most Of His Lone Opportunity

Devin Teigen had hoped to fish the entire Bassmaster Central Open circuit this year, but life got in the way.

"We sold our house last winter and we've moved twice since then and recently bought another house, and I just couldn't fit everything into the schedule," he said. "I wanted to make sure I at least got into the LaCrosse event because I'm very familiar with that water."

Indeed.

The 33-year-old Teigen, a resident of Nelson, Wis., made a major adjustment on the fly that that led him to victory last week at the Mississippi River. Starting the final day in 9th place, he caught a tournament-best 16-13 stringer to beat out fellow local Mike Brueggen by 11 ounces with a 43-03 total.

The tournament was the B.A.S.S. debut for Teigen, who works as a lead CNC machinist at a prototype shop. His prize package was valued in excess of $39,000.

Following are some of the details of how he went about topping the 198-angler field.

Level Played Huge Role

The water level on the river dropped approximately 3 1/2 feet between the previous weekend and the start of the event last Thursday, which gave Teigen and other competitors who know the system extremely well a bit of an advantage.

"Whether you're from there or not it's tough when it's dropping that quick, but we deal with those ups and downs a lot," Teigen said. "The past few weeks we've had some really bad storms and there was a BFL a couple weeks before (in which he finished 13th) where the water was really muddy and it was tough fishing.

"Then, just like that, it dropped."

He practiced for several days leading into the derby and pinned down some quality smallmouths in Pool 7 (one lock from the launch pool) that he knew would eventually be on the move, but which he hoped would carry him through the first day. He used a Zara Spook, a Carolina rig and a Zoom Fluke to compile his 13-10 stringer by 7:30 a.m.

He didn't catch a legal keeper the rest of the day and landed in 9th place on the initial standings sheet. He held that same position after day 2, when he transitioned to catching largemouths on frogs midway through the day and ended up weighing a 12-07 bag.

"I started where I'd caught them the day before and never had a bite," he said. "I think those fish were just gone. I ran everything I could think of to catch smallmouth and I had one small one in the box at 11:30.

He visited some frog water in Pool 7 and picked up a couple of 2-pound-class largemouths. With still nearly three hours remaining in his day, he locked back down to pool 8 and ran some places where he'd gotten frog bites in practice. He caught three that averaged better than 3 pounds apiece and got rid of his puny smallmouth.

"I was stoked that I made it to day 3 because that was kind of my goal. I knew I had a lot of ground to make up (he was almost 5 1/2 pounds behind day-2 leader Wes Logan) and to have a chance to win I was going to need a big bag and some of the top guys would need to have a tough day.

"I got pretty fortunate and that's exactly what happened."

Fun Final Day

Teigen didn't make up his mind as to where he'd fish on the final day until he was on his way to the launch ramp.

"I kind of wanted to go back to Pool 7 because I'm more familiar with it than I am with Pool 8, but I don't like dealing with barges and locks – I lost about three hours of fishing time on day 2. I decided I'd stay in Pool 8 and fish some areas where I'd seen some good quality in practice."

It was a good call, as he went through about 20 keepers on the day and the first four he set the hook on all weighed more than 3 pounds. He had a limit by late morning and made one slight cull after that.

He lost what was perhaps his biggest bite of the day when his rod broke near the reel seat, but the five he took to the scale were enough to give him the biggest win of his career.

"I fished four different areas that day and in some of them I'd seen a ton of boats in practice," he said. "I had some bites in there and I figured others did too, so I thought a lot of those fish would've been caught.

"I think what happened is a lot of guys just didn't go that shallow. There was a foot of water or less where I actually caught the fish. A frog is my favorite way to fish on the river and it's what I have the most confidence in, and I was just making really long casts and being as quiet as I could and moving real slow."
