Truth be told, Bryan Thrift was in a sour mood most of the FLW Tour season. Ever since March 8 to be precise.

That’s the day he finished the Lake Seminole FLW Tour in 130th place, an abysmal result that brought his streak of 71 straight competition days with a limit to an end. It was his worst finish in more than three seasons and the third-worst placement of his 13-year Tour career.

And it ticked him off.

He bounced back with four straight top-40 finishes to close the season and wound up sixth in Tour points, his 11th top-10 points finish in the last 11 seasons. He’ll be among the field at Lake Hamilton for the Forrest Wood Cup next month. Life as Bryan Thrift is still pretty good. Still, the Seminole fiasco ate at him. Until now.

Trading on knowledge he gained on his way to a third-place finish at the Lake Champlain FLW Tour season finale last month, he returned to the fertile fishery that straddles the New York-Vermont border and came away with a wire-to-wire victory last weekend in the FLW Series Northern Division opener. Thrift caught 22-06 on day 1 to set the tone, then averaged 17-plus pounds the next two days to edge Ohio angler Edward Levin by seven ounces with a three-day total of 57-00.

It’s Thrift’s third career FLW Series win as a boater and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

“Now, I feel like I had a good year,” he said. “When I look back, I made three top-10s (on Tour) and two top-10s in the Southeastern Costas. That’s a decent year, but I couldn’t get Seminole out of my head. I felt like it’s been a terrible year because of that. I’m not mad anymore about it. This got rid of those bad vibes.”

Something to Build On

It took several years for Thrift to jive with Champlain. His Tour finishes there have been a mixed bag, but a 11th-place finish there in 2016 started to open his mind some more about how to tackle the massive lake that is teeming with smallmouth and largemouth.

“For the longest time, Champlain was a place I liked, but didn’t love,” he said. “I’d never been successful there. I had mostly middle-of-the-pack finishes. A lot of that was my own doing because I’d purposefully avoid fishing the obvious stuff like the reefs that are always good. I’d feel like everybody would be fishing them and I don’t like fishing in crowds and my finishes reflected that.

“I’ve put that in the back of my mind and I’ve started focusing on areas where tournaments are historically won and just get in there and outfish everybody.”

Thrift said much of his victory was built upon the strategies and locations that were effective for him three weeks ago. While a topwater and swimbait were the most productive elements of his arsenal during the Tour event, a Texas-rigged Damiki Stinger and a Neko-rigged Stinger were the key producers this time around, especially around patches of grass.

And in typical Thrift fashion, he needed a milk run of spots.

“I found two or three more areas practicing this week,” he said. “Days 1 and 3 it was calm enough that I ran around quite a bit and that’s what helped me the most. If those days had been windy, I wouldn’t have had a chance to win. I didn’t have any groups located that were good enough to win on. I had to hit 10 to 12 places each of those days.”

And it was one spot late on day 3 that provided the bites he needed to claim the win. He’d fished there during the Tour event, but hadn’t gotten to it during the Series stop.

“If it was calm, I was going to run to it, so I went over there and caught two four-pounders,” he said. “Saving that spot is what did it for me.”

Indeed, he caught a 2 1/2-pounder to gain a few ounces, then sorted through some smaller fish before snatching a 3-15 and a 4-02 to give him the cushion he needed.

Thrift said the best decision he made was not devoting practice or tournament time to running south to Ticonderoga, where many anglers, including winner Casey Scanlon, fared well during the Tour event.

“I felt like I had enough good stuff up north to do well and I wondered, ‘Do I run down and learn more about it because so many people did well in the Tour event there,’” he said.

Ultimately, he didn’t make the run and spent the entirety of the tournament from Mallett’s Bay north.

Fast Start

Thrift said practice was a frustrating endeavor because as he was checking places that produced quality fish in the Tour event, the fish seemed to be trending smaller this time around.

“I wasn’t excited going into the event because I hadn’t caught any of the bigger fish,” he said.

Patience on the water has never been one of the Thrift’s strengths, but he exhibited just enough at Champlain to sort through as many as a dozen 12- to 15-inch fish to catch one that wound up in his livewell.

“I stuck it out and went through 100 (worms) to catch five four-pounders,” he said. “I wanted to leave, but I’d always stick around and catch one more that made me hang around.”

Thrift wasn’t necessarily targeting one species over the other. He had waypoints where smallies and largemouth were mixed together and he had another spot with some scattered milfoil on it where the smallmouth were active until only about 7:30 a.m., then the largemouth seemed to take over.

He went through an estimated 60 bass on day 1 and figures he landed 30 keepers to tally 22-06 – one of five 20-pound stringers caught in the tournament – and take the early lead. It was the kind of start any tournament angler dreams of.

“Up until weigh-in, I figured I had 20 1/2, but when it weighed 22-06, I said, ‘If I can just average 17 or 18 the rest of the way I have a legit shot to win,’” he said. “It definitely takes the weight off of you because you’re not behind the 8 ball to catch 20 to contend the rest of the way. It takes you out of scramble mode. I just had to remain calm and make par the next two days.”

He hit his target by catching 16-06 on a windy day 2 that limited him to just two spots, and following up with 18-04 on the final day.

The bulk of the fish he caught were living in and around grass patches in five to six feet of water.

“I’d start with a Texas rig, but I caught a lot of my bigger ones on the Neko rig,” he said. “I don’t know if it was the pressure from last few weeks, but that seemed to be what they wanted.”

> Thrift, who fishes as often as he can, has planned to fish the Northern Division since the schedule was released last fall. “Because of the Tour schedule being done in June, I wanted to have something to do,” he said.
