Lake Chickamauga and its fish are changing, and fast.
The lake’s level has risen roughly a foot since the start of practice for the FLW Tour event, and its water temperatures seem to be rising just as quickly. Throw in the time of year, with fish spawning or finishing up and moving offshore, and any one pattern can be great one day and completely flame out the next.
Just look at day 2, when more than half the pros who cracked the 20-pound mark on opening day failed to catch even 16 pounds and one, Randy Allen, didn’t bring in a limit. Yet a number of pros have managed to adapt with the changes due in large part to having multiple patterns – none better than Matt Greenblatt.
The Florida pro used a “three-headed monster” approach to follow up his 23-05 day 1 with 19-13 today. His 43-02 two-day total gives him an 8-ounce lead over day-1 leader John Cox, who managed 17-15 despite his sight-fishing pattern dwindling a bit.
David Dudley is also keeping his options open, and that’s allowed him to be the lone pro to crack the 20-pound mark both days (22-02 and 20-01). Ron Nelson slipped to fourth after bringing in only 14-11, where he’s now tied with Jared McMillan with 39-01.
Austin Felix caught one of the biggest bass he’s weighed in a tournament (a 7-13 kicker) to anchor his 17-15 bag. Meanwhile, Billy McCaghren and Ramie Colson both slipped up today, bringing in 15-14 and 15-08, respectively. Local favorite Buddy Gross cracked 20 pounds to climb, as did Clark Rheem (21-13) to round out the top 10.
One notable outside the top 10 was Aaron Britt, who brought in only three fish for 8-12 on Thursday. But on day 2 he sacked up the biggest bag of the tournament, 27-03, to climb all the way to 11th.
Still, after two days of fishing, the true giants continue to be hard to come by, as not a single 10-pounder has been weighed in yet. Greenblatt has yet to connect with a giant all week.
“If you know someone to call to get one of those giants, please let me know,” Greenblatt said. “I really would like one. All my fish have been cookie-cutter 4- and 5-pounders, except for the lone 6-pounder I caught today, and that was one I just happened upon on a bed.”
Being from Florida, Greenblatt came to Chickamauga looking for grass and actually found a shallow-grass pattern, but he’s been unable to replicate it outside of one small area. There, he’s been dragging a Yamamoto Senko and tossing another lure he’s keeping to himself for right now.
That said, he may not need to keep the secret for long, because admittedly, he leaned hard on his shallow grass the last two days and doesn’t know how much it has left in it. That might worry most pros, but Greenblatt has the luxury of having a dock pattern he’s only sampled a little bit thus far and a couple offshore spots he hasn’t even touched.
One thing Greenblatt and many pros noted is there seem to be two windows. There’s a strong morning bite that dies quickly, particularly shallow with the shad spawn going on. Then there is an afternoon window that seems to turn on after 1 p.m.
“I’m going to keep dancing with the girl who brought me, at least to start tomorrow,” Greenblatt said. “I’ll hang around the grass for a couple hours and then go to the docks. Maybe hit the offshore stuff, though I’m sure it’s already been hit pretty hard. They were pretty obvious spots any guy worth his salt could find, but they’re still nice to have come the weekend.”
Meanwhile, Cox’s sight-fishing pattern just never fully materialized today.
The giant he was messing with yesterday? Gone, as were the five 6-pounders he had marked. That left him with a few bucks to catch off beds, along with catching a pair of fish he weighed in tossing around a Berkley MaxScent The General while looking around.
“We had a little bit of weather this morning and the water is rising,” Cox said. “So maybe that did something, but I really don’t know why they all left.”
If you can believe it, Cox’s entire weight has thus far been comprised of males, which has been a major point of frustration.
“I need to figure out how to get one of those females,” Cox said. “I’ve been trolling around so much, I just keep thinking please let me run into one. If I can get one of those, I can really have a giant bag.”
As for Dudley, he’s just enjoying himself.
“I just love fishing this time of year anywhere I’m at,” Dudley said. “The bass are shallow and you have the bream beds and the shad spawn. I’m happy.”
Making him particularly happy is the ability to keep a wacky rig in his hands, but he’s also worked in a flipping bite and a bladed jig to mix it up and stay versatile with the changing conditions. Like Greenblatt, he also has some offshore stuff he hasn’t needed in his back pocket.
One of the biggest keys for Dudley thus far, he said, is continually running new water.
“I don’t like to fish behind myself,” Dudley said. “So I’m going to run all new water tomorrow just like I did today. Just keep running around until I feel I need to change, and then I’ll change.”
