Caleb Kuphall hails from Mukwonago, Wis., located about 30 miles west of Milwaukee. He’s a part-time fishing guide in the area and also works part-time at a tackle shop. His main motivation for signing up for the Bassmaster Central Opens this season was because the upper Mississippi River (La Crosse, Wis.) – his home waters – will be the venue for the third Central Open coming up early August.

He figured he’d do what he could to be competitive in the other events on the schedule, despite a lack of experience, knowing his best shot to contend would be on the mighty Mississippi.

So, how in the heck did he blow town with the winner’s check and trophy after totaling 43-02 over three days at Smith Lake last weekend, rallying past a gang of contender on the final day that included some stalwart spotted bass anglers and a former Forrest Wood Cup winner?

“I have no idea,” Kuphall said with a chuckle. “I was there once before in 2008 for an FLW Tour event as a co-angler. That’s the only other time I’ve seen the water. I don’t remember anything from that, so this felt like my first time there.”

He went into the event with few expectations. He’d finished 25th at Toledo Bend back in February and would’ve called a top-50 finish at Smith a successful trip south.

Instead, he found himself in the top 10 after each of the first two days, then erased a 4 1/2-pound deficit on the final day with a 16-13 stringer, anchored by a 5-07 kicker, to come from eighth place and claim the biggest win of his tournament career. As he finished his drive back to Wisconsin on Sunday, he said he was still in a state of disbelief.

“It’s pretty incredible for me to just go somewhere that I’d never fished before and to do so well,” he said. “My spots were a lot better than anticipated.”

Practice

Kuphall was on the water for a full week prior to the start of competition, but it was a series of pockets he found on his first day of practice that ultimately won him the tournament.

“I stayed at Smith Lake Park on the northeast side of the lake, so I launched there and just went fishing,” he said. “Coming in, I knew that I wanted to fish dirty water. I’m a shallow-water guy. I’m not going to go out in 60 feet of water and catch suspended spots.”

The pockets he found had a mix of cover (laydowns, docks, chunk rock) and the dirty water he was looking for. That combination produced bigger largemouth than other places he sampled around the lake.

“I knew getting away from the ramp was my best chance to find dirty water,” he added.

A couple days before the tournament began, he developed another pattern centered around spotted bass that were focused on baitfish a few miles from the dam.

“I found that just fishing what looked good,” he said. “I just ran into a bunch of bait in a 400-yard stretch and the bass were there, too. It was a chunck rock bank with some wood on it and it had a bluff wall section. Most of the bites were in 3 to 5 feet. I figured I could use that spot for a quick limit.

“The rest of practice was a dud. I caught fish, but nothing that would help me. I was pretty limited to the areas that I found and had confidence fishing in.”

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 14-04
> Day 2: 5, 12-01
> Day 3: 5, 16-13
> Total = 15, 43-02

Kuphall went into the tournament with a two-pronged game plan and little else. He was hoping to bag a limit of spots early before chasing largemouth in the dirty water.

On day 1, which saw rainy conditions for the most part, he caught three spots in the first 15 minutes to break the ice. By 8:30 a.m., he moved on with a limit, which included three decent spots. He then headed north to flip a jig for largemouth and came away with two in the 3 1/2-pound plus range to get to 14-04 on the day, good enough for ninth place.

“I was overjoyed with it,” he said.

He stuck to the same plan on Friday, but he noticed the fishing wasn’t near as good. He left his spotted bass area with a limit, but only two he considered “decent.” His largemouth areas didn’t produce at the same rate as they did on day 1, but he was able to scrape together a few upgrades and maxed out at 12-01 to move into eighth place with 26-05.

“They definitely bit better on day 1,” he said. “I think a lot of that had to do with the weather with the clouds and low light. The largemouth bit that much better with those conditions.”

Having already exceeded his expectations for the week by making the day-3 cut, Kuphall figured there was little sense in spending much time chasing spots in the morning on Saturday. He knew his only hope to make up considerable ground would be via largemouth.

“My mindset was that I’d make a quick stop on the spots and see what I could get, but I knew if I had a chance to win, it would be on largemouth up north so I would spend most of the day up there,” he said.

He stuck to the plan and after going 45 minutes without a bite down toward the dam, he headed north and began hitting the dirty-water pockets. On days 1 and 2, he jumped around based on instinct, but by day 3 he had an understanding of what the better stretches were.

“I hit the good sections first, then fished some less productive stuff,” he said.

He also figured the fish were in full-blown spawning mode based on the concentration of fish that was in the areas he targeted.

“In order to catch as many as I did there had to be some moving into those pockets,” he said. “Otherwise I would’ve wiped them out way before the tournament ended.”

While a combination of jigs had been his best producers on days 1 and 2, the jig bite was non-existent early on day 3, prompting him to switch to a vibrating jig. He caught a couple keepers, then landed the 5-07 that proved to be a difference maker.

“That came off a dock in about 15 feet of water,” he recalled. “It was sitting up under some pontoons. I skipped it under there and she bit.”

Not long after, he went back to a flipping jig and finished his limit. Still, he figured the best he could do was climb into the top 5.

“I had no inkling whatsoever that I had enough to win,” he said. “With (John) Cox, (Jordan) Wiggins and (David) Williams, ahead of me, I figured they weren’t going to drop. I figured fourth was the best I could and not much more.”
