To look or wind – that is the question.
After two days on the Kissimmee Chain for the FLW Tour event, it’s pretty evident the spawners aren’t flooding in like was predicted. Yet multiple 10-pounders crossed the weigh-in stage today, along with no shortage of 8s and 9s, and the majority of the big girls came via sight-fishing.
At the same time, there are a number of pros at the top of the leaderboard doing just fine chunking and winding offshore, including Aaron Britt (45-04 total) and Braxton Setzer (42-12), who are in 2nd and 3rd, respectively.
Thus, for many of the anglers who made the top-30 cut, the decision may be go for broke looking or go for consistency out deep. And no angler may be struggling with it more than leader John Cox.
Despite having cracked a 31-plus-pound bag on day 1 and leading after two days with 48-13, he sounded more like a pro who finished 100th with how many “I don’t knows” he recited when talking about day 2 and his plans for the rest of the derby.
“I have no idea what to do,” said Cox, who admits he had all of 7 pounds in his livewell as late as 1 p.m. “Nothing worked today. I kept trying to figure something out and I just never did.”
One of the best sight-fishermen in the sport, it’s little surprise he devoted the first 5-plus hours of the day in Toho looking to run into some big females on beds. Problem was, he never found any. So he finally ditched it and started winding a Berkley Wind Up on outside grass edges to scratch together a limit. He caught 17-04 thanks to some “lucky” 5- and 4-pounders that came around 2 p.m., but even then his luck may have been misguided.
“Evidently a wave moved up right around the time I caught those two, because I talked to a bunch of guys who said they ran into an 8- or 9-pounder or two on beds at the same time I caught those,” Cox said. “Makes me wish I stayed with sight-fishing a little longer, but who would’ve thought they’d move up late like that. I don’t know. Just frustrating.”
Cox still has a 3 1/2-pound lead and figures 20 pounds a day over the weekend should seal the win, but it may not with the guys behind him.
Aaron Britt caught 24 pounds fishing offshore in a place he has to himself.
Britt, Setzer and 5th-place Buddy Gross (42-04 total) are all fishing offshore in Toho, and they all have their areas pretty much to themselves; something Britt says is “mindboggling” considering the typical offshore crowds that are the norm in Florida. That said, being all by himself has Britt’s confidence overflowing, which is saying something considering he is normally a confident guy to begin with.
“I truly believe in my heart I’m on the fish to win,” said Britt, who boxed 24-02 today. “I’m jacked to fish this weekend.”
The California pro came to Florida with the mindset to layoff the bed-fish – “they just rarely hold up for four days” – and kept his focus off the bank. He eventually found an area of offshore grass in Toho that he’s been plying with rattlebaits and worms, and the result has been a pair of 20-plus-pound bags.
Setzer has had to slow down his presentations as he hangs in a couple-hundred-yard area where he had a school come up chasing bait around his boat in practice. He’s been able to milk the school to the tune of 19-07 and 23-05 over two days.
“I have just that little deal,” Setzer said. “So I hope the sight-fishing game goes away.”
Casey Scanlon doesn’t echo that sentiment, but he knows it may happen.
The Missouri pro knew he was in a good area with big fish after watching a number of top pros catch giants on day 1 all around him. He stuck a few, too, but he broke them off and came in with only 12-10. That prompted a switch from braided line to fluorocarbon, and today he landed a 10-04, an 8-pounder and 5-pounder all while fishing for spawners he couldn't see.” He did still lose another 8-pounder, but he didn't complain considering he brought in the big bag of the day – 28 pounds – to jump all the way up to 7th place.
“I know there are some giants in my area and I know some more were moving in today,” Scanlon said. “Fortunately, I’m not looking at them or else I’d be worried about tomorrow’s forecast.”
For reference, Saturday is calling for clouds and wind – the worst possible sight-fishing conditions. Thus, it should get interesting for any shallow-dwelling pros even if the big females do keep coming up.
“Of course, the weather is going to throw us a curveball,” Britt said. “It wouldn’t be an FLW derby without one.”
