The conclusion of the 2018 FLW Tour season was so discouraging for Terry Bolton that he considered calling it quits after 22 years on the circuit. He'd finished 114th on his home water (Kentucky Lake) in May, then went to Lake St. Clair the following month and fared only three places better to end up 63rd on the final points list.

From a fishing perspective, he had no momentum working for him whatsoever when he came to Texas for this week's season opener at Sam Rayburn Reservoir. However, he did have a completely different mindset – his marriage in September had improved matters from a personal standpoint and he wanted to experience a season fishing without co-anglers, who'd been eliminated upon the conclusion of last season.

"My goal for this year was to go out and have fun," he said.

He had a great deal of merriment on day 2 as he caught a whopping 33-09 stringer at "Big Sam" to move into the lead at the midway point with a 2-day total of 54-03. A victory would be his first at the Tour level.

He has an advantage of just under 6 pounds over day-1 leader and first-year pro Nick LeBrun, who weighed 19-02 for a 48-04 total. From there, it's another 3 pounds down to veteran Texan Jim Tutt, whose 21-11 stringer gave him a 45-04 aggregate.

Chad Warren slid from 3rd to 4th with an 18-15 haul for a 44-06 total. Bryan Thrift, who's pretty much a fixture in the top 10 at every event, climbed four places to 5th with 43-15 (23-00 on day 2).

Rookie Miles Burghoff heads up the second half of the top 10 with 42-08. He's followed by Billy Shelton III (42-01), Jordan Osborne (41-09), Sam George (39-09) and Andy Wicker (38-14). Wicker compiled half of his weight on a single cast as he caught an 11-02 monster that's the 9th-largest fish in Tour history.

Bolton's two biggest bites on day 2 combined to weigh 18 pounds.

Burghoff, Shelton and Wicker were the only newcomers to the top 10. They replaced David Dudley (5th to 21st with 9-01 on day 2), the illness-ridden and fatigued Troy Morrow (7th to 29th, 8-10) and Scott Martin (8th to 19th, 11-09).

The field has been reduced to the top 30 for round 3 and only 10 competitors will move on to Sunday's final round, when the winner will be determined via cumulative weight.

Bolton Blasted 'Em

Bolton, who's won more than $1 million in FLW competition, said the last time he caught a bag bigger than the one he weighed on day 2 was on a private lake several years back. The last time it had happened in competition was more than a decade ago in the one-and-done FLW Tour Series Fish-Off at hawg-rich Falcon Lake.

His sack was topped by a 9 1/2-pounder and he backed it up with an 8 1/2.

"I caught a limit pretty quick and culled through some with a couple 4s and a 3 1/2," he said. "Then I hit a little dry spell and moved around some, and about lunchtime I stopped back where I'd made those culls and caught the big ones. After a while I was culling 5-pounders so I quit at 1:30.

"I'd wanted to leave when I had about 27 pounds, but a bunch of locals were hawking me so I stayed around trying to keep them off. I'm glad I did because I ended up catching the 9-08."

He did all his damage with deep-diving Rapala crankbaits.

"All along my goal has been 15 to 17 pounds a day. I exceeded that the first day when I caught 20 (pounds) and I way overshot it today.

"I think there's some more fish there, but I'm probably going to have some more help from the locals."

LeBrun Rallied Late

LeBrun had only about 12 pounds in his livewell at 1 o'clock, but made 7 pounds worth of culls during the afternoon.

Jim Tutt weighed a stringer that exceeded 20 pounds for the second straight day.

"I was kind of panicking, and then I made a move to a spot I hadn't hit yet," he said. "I went in there and it was (a bite on) every cast. I had to catch a lot to weed through the small ones, but I caught a 4 and two 3s in the last 30 minutes and that gave me what I had."

The places that had been so good to him the previous day, when he weighed 29-02, weren't nearly as productive on the morning of day 2.

"I don't know if the fish left or if the boat pressure got to them or what – it was just an off day for that part of the lake. I was able to get a small limit with a 5-pounder before I made the move.

"A few guys fishing the same part of the lake didn't make the cut. I didn't have any problems with them, but (fewer) boats will be a plus, for sure. I think I have fish left and it's a matter of getting on the right rotation. I'm going to step on the gas as much as I can tomorrow."

He focused on the 15- to 20-foot depth range on day 2 and got some key bites on a prototype 3/4-ounce V&M spinnerbait.

"It's something that can be fished really slow and it was definitely the deal for me today."

Fun Day for Tutt

Tutt used a crankbait to amass his second straight stringer that exceeded 20 pounds.

"I hit two of my main spots this morning and then went looking and I ended up at an old spot that I didn't fish in practice," he said. "I drove 15 miles to fish a 10-yard stretch and I caught two 4s and four 3s. I left after that because what I was catching wasn't helping me and I didn't want to burn up a bunch of 3-pounders.

Andy Wicker's 11-02 monster accounted for half of the bag that propelled him into the top 10.

"That gave me a pretty good limit and allowed me to utilize my knowledge of the lake. I didn't lose any and I didn't get in a hurry. It was a lot of fun."

His bag was topped by a 5-pounder and the smallest fish he took to the stage weighed 3-10.

"I won't say I'm confident, but I'm relaxed. I'll go out tomorrow and see what happens."

Warren Satisfied

Warren's weight was off by 6 1/2 pounds from the prior day, but he was content with his day-2 showing.

"I'm pretty happy with it," he said. "I had most of my fish by 10:30 and I went looking for new areas and found one more. I lost one good fish on a Carolina rig and broke one off in a bush, but now I know what I'm looking for, anyway.

"I've got two spots that I haven't seen another boat on all week and the new spot had guys in the area, but they were skipping right around it. I'm a little more confident now that I've found that other spot – I feel like there's a lot of fish where I'm fishing."

George Still Pleased

George, a 23-year-old rookie from Alabama, settled for an 11-04 stringer on day 2 after opening the event with a 28-05 haul.

"Yesterday was unexpected and what happened today was more along the lines of what I was thinking coming into it," he said. "But even making the top 30 was way out of the picture after practice. At least now I get another shot at it.

"I stayed in the same two or three areas I had because I felt like I had a shot to win if I made the right decisions. I stuck with that mentality and I executed perfectly, but I just didn't have any big bites. I was pretty sure that if I caught a limit it would get me (to day 3)."

Another competitor was on his best spot when he arrived first thing in the morning.

"I'm sure he fished it early yesterday and left because I didn't get there until 11 o'clock (on day 1). He was right on the juice this morning and he smoked the heck out of them."
