As much fun as it can be for an angler to compete in a tournament close to home or on what’s considered home waters, the inherent pressures and other factors that accompany such a scenario can be counter-productive. It’s pretty evident now that Ott DeFoe is immune to whatever negative forces are at play when he competes at Douglas Lake, especially in a Bassmaster Open.

With the conditions much different than they were a year ago when he won in his backyard, DeFoe again relied on his years of experience at the reservoir on the French Broad River in the mountains of east Tennessee. He averaged just shy of 15 pounds per day (he finished with 44-09) and used a 12-10 stringer on the final day to erase a nearly three-pound deficit.

According to Fishing Tackle Retailer editor and noted bass fishing statistician Ken Duke, the win puts DeFoe in an exclusive group of anglers who’ve recorded three B.A.S.S. victories on the same body of water. Robert Lee’s only four B.A.S.S. wins all came at the California Delta while Shaw Grigsby (Sam Rayburn Reservoir) and Kevin VanDam (St. Lawrence River) have completed hat tricks as well.

“It’s very humbling and rewarding, but that puts that much more pressure on me for the next one,” DeFoe said. “I don’t want to screw it up now. With winning last year at the same time of year and coming back, I put a lot of extra pressure on myself to win this one more than any of them. I just wanted to show I could win it again.”

It required daily modifications to his thought process as the current flow he targeted in the French Broad River slowed while other competitors on the main lake dealt with swiftly falling water levels as authorities prepared for the looming onslaught of rain from the remnants of Hurricane Florence.

“The water last year was low, but was on par for where it should be. This year, the water should’ve been lower, but it was still higher, by like six or seven feet,” DeFoe said. “That changed the landscape and put a lot of buck brush and willow trees in the water.”

That additional cover gave DeFoe plenty of targets to throw at over the course of three days. He ultimately pecked away at two long stretches and mixed in a couple other isolated spots to catch the winning fish.

Here are some additional details about DeFoe’s latest Douglas triumph.

Practice

DeFoe’s practice at Douglas amounted to about 4 1/2 hours spent riding around while his kids were at school two days before competition began. Talk about the comforts of home.

“I wanted to go look at everything,” he said. “I wanted to see the water color. We had had some rain so I wanted to make sure nothing major had happened. I didn’t fish and didn’t go anywhere near where I ended up fishing in the tournament.”

In his mind, his game plan was already set.

“I already knew where I intended my first stop to be and my second and third,” he said. “As far as the fishing goes up there. There’s a Plan A and B, and if you have to resort to Plans C or D, I knew what to do, but I had to get that first bite because that probably would change day 2. The daily conditions up there dictate how they bite.”

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 15-00
> Day 2: 5, 16-15
> Day 3: 5, 12-10
> Total = 15, 44-09

While those focused on the main lake dealt with rapidly falling water, DeFoe was so far up the French Broad that his key stretches were immune to the effects of the water being let out of the reservoir. The current flow in the river, though, did slow down through the tournament and fish acted differently each day as a result.

“I was above where the lake level affects the river,” DeFoe said. “It’s the same up there when the lake is 40 feet low. The water level falling affected other guys more than me. The river level did change for, though. It fell about a foot between Thursday and Saturday and as the river dropped, the current fell off.”

He started day 1 with a moving bait in rocky current break area, but came up empty at his first two stops.

“Two places where I know they live,” he said. “It wasn’t a significant amount of time, but then I went up the bank to some wood cover and switched to a jig and had my limit within an hour.”

From there, he made sure to put his half-ounce black/blue jig into the meat of whatever hard cover he came across.

“With the water up, most of the fish were tight to the cover – right at the base of a tree or in the middle of a laydown,” he said. “I’d pitch it in there and move it around a bit, then I’d feel that little bitty tick. They were not aggressive bites.”

He had a pair of 3 1/2-pounders in his 15-00 stringer that placed him 5th after day 1.

He went into day 2 knowing the flow was slowing down and he’d noticed the water had started to clear up. That made it tempting for him to pick up a frog, even on day 1, but he stuck with the jig for the balance of the day. On Friday, though, he went with his hunch and it paid off.

“Usually that’s the recipe for topwater – slower and clearer water,” he said. “Within five minutes, I caught a 3-pounder, but I was close to the bottom of the stretch of bank I fished so I ran back to the top and missed another one, then caught a 3 1/2 and a 4. It was pretty obvious that was a good move at that point.”

He said putting the frog into tight spots around the wood was key.

“You had it to put it right on their nose,” he said. “Most of my bites came within the first three twitches.”

His 16-15 stringer moved him into 2nd, but he still trailed Patrick Walters by 2-14.

The final day started slow for DeFoe, who wound up resorting to a Texas-rigged finesse worm that he allowed the current to wash into the areas he felt were still holding fish.

“I had to adjust with the current positioned the fish and how they wanted the bait,” he said.

He’d caught a couple fish on a shaky head toward the end of day 1 and “that showed me I was leaving fish behind with the jig,” he added. He caught a couple keepers that way on day 2 as well so he knew it could still be a viable option. It turned out to be his saving grace.

“I was struggling bad and had one 2 1/2-pounder on the frog at 9:30 a.m.,” he said. “Nothing was coming together. I went to a short stretch I’d been saving and caught a keeper largemouth around 11 to give me two keepers.”

He returned to a stretch he’d fished the previous two days and finished his limit with a 2 1/2 and two other keeper-quality fish. Between 1 and 2 p.m., he caught two upgrades – a 2 3/4 and a 3 1/2, both with the worm off the same tree – and he headed in with his smallest limit of the week.

Ultimately, it was enough to overtake Walters, who managed only three keepers for 6-07, as DeFoe prevailed by 3-05.

“Last year, it came together pretty easily,” he said. “Out of the gate, I didn’t expect this one to be because I knew that area had been pressured the last couple of weeks. I had no inclination it would be easy. It was about keying in on what the fish were telling ne and then following through on it.”

Winning Gear Notes

> Jig gear: 7’6” heavy-action Bass Pro Shops Johnny Morris Platinum casting rod, Bass Pro Shops Johnny Morris Platinum casting reel (8.3:1 ratio), 20-pound Bass Pro Shops XPS fluorocarbon line, 1/2-oz. Terminator Pro jig (black/blue), Bass Pro Shops Elite Chunk (green-pumpkin blue).

> Frog gear: 7’3” medium-heavy Bass Pro Shops Johnny Morris Carbonlite 2.0 casting rod, same reel (6.8:1 ratio), 50-pound Bass Pro Shops Hyperbraid, Terminator Walking Frog Junior (smoke silver shad).

> Worm gear: 7’1” medium-heavy Bass Pro Shops Johnny Morris Platinum casting rod, same as jig reel, 17-pound Bass Pro Shops XPS fluorocarbon line, 3/16-oz. Swagger Tackle tungsten worm weight, 3/0 VMC Heavy Duty worm hook, 6” Bass Pro Shops Magnum Fin-Eke Worm (green-pumpkin).

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – “Having fished up there since I was 15 years old. Most of where I fished, I’ve walked every inch of it at some point of my life. I’ve just spent so much time up there.”

> Performance edge – “That Fin-Eke worm is something I’ve used more and more in tough conditions. I love to flip a jig, but there are times where you will put it front of them and you won’t get a bite, but that worm gets bites when nothing else will. Also, my (MinnKota) Ultrex and SpotLock got plenty of use.”
