Hall Caught Quality From River And Lake Ontario

Kyle Hall spent most of the latter part of the summer in upstate New York and competed in two triple-A events. The first one didn't go well at all, but the second was an entirely different story.

The 21-year-old Texan notched the biggest victory of his young career over the weekend as he outdueled a slew of Northern smallmouth aces to prevail at the 1000 Islands Northern FLW Series. His 68-11 total over 3 days bested runner-up Carl Jocumsen by a little over 3 pounds.

After finishing 157th at the Lake Champlain Bassmaster Eastern Open in early August, Hall was ready to head back to the Lone Star State. However, good friend and fellow competitor Dakota Ebare talked him in to hanging around and fishing Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River for several weeks and then competing in the Series derby.

"It's by far my favorite place I've ever fished," he said. "It's a phenomenal fishery. There's no way to even guess at how many 5- and 6-pounders I caught in 4 weeks there.

"My boat was broke down for a while and I fished for about a week out of the back of Dakota's boat, and one day on the lake I caught 23 pounds in 15 minutes. It slowed down for a few days when the lake turned over, but I had 25 pounds almost every day fishing both the lake and the river."

Following are some of the details of his victory.

Practice

Hall never had a specific game plan for his extended practice session or the tournament. He discovered lots of schools that held oversized bronzebacks, but they rarely stayed put from one day to the next.

"In practice I found them anywhere from 20 to 40 feet deep in the current breaks," he said. "One day they'd be in 20 feet, and then the day after that the same school might be in 40 feet, about 50 yards away. I'd mark them and mark everything around there that they might go to.

"On the Thursday, Friday and Saturday before the tournament, I fished just like I was in the tournament and I caught 25, 23 and 20 (pounds), so it was almost the same outcome."

He caught everything on dropshot rigs using one of two Berkley baits.

Competition

Hall opened the tournament in the river and boxed 23 pounds in the first hour. It didn't take him long after that to reach his eye-popping weight, which was the heaviest of the tournament.

The river wasn't nearly as generous on day 2, however. With no fish in his livewell at 10:30, he made a 45-mile run to the lake and put together a bag that gave him a total of just over 50 pounds, keeping him in the lead with one day remaining.

He lost a 5-pounder that day and was forced to take a 3 to the scale. At the time, he thought that would cost him in the end.

Due to powerful winds, the lake was placed off-limits for day 3. He pulled 16 pounds from the river by 1 o'clock, then made two substantial culls after moving to a locale where he could use drift paddles to navigate with the current and against the north wind – a tactic made necessary by a dead trolling motor.

He was pleased that he was able to keep his wits about him in such a trying circumstance.

"Usually when I get nervous or anxious, I tend to lose it mentally," he said. "The week showed me a lot about myself that I didn't know and it'll really help my confidence for next year."

Even with the two late culls, he didn't think he'd caught enough to win. As it turned out, his stringer was the second-biggest of the day behind Jocumsen's 19-00.

"There were some really good guys behind me and I thought someone would have over 20 pounds. If (Tour pro Chris Johnston, who started the day in 2nd) had done it, he would've easily beaten me."

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – "Going to the lake on day 2 when I didn't have any fish from the river. I got there at 11 o'clock and I had a limit by 1."
