Things got much tougher across Lake Oahe today. Some will attribute it to the band of vicious storms that passed through central South Dakota on Friday night that had people (Elite Series anglers included) heading to the nearest storm shelters. Others believe the fishing pressure in some areas that are holding a concentration of smallmouth is starting to have an impact.

Both theories may be accurate, but there’s certainly a handful of competitors who haven’t missed a beat so far.

While the weights pulled from the massive Missouri River reservoir on day 2 fell off significantly, the tournament saw its first two 20-pound stringers, including one from Mark Daniels, Jr., who rode a 20-04 bag into the lead with 39-00.

He has a 1 1/2-pound edge over day-1 leader David Fritts, who bagged 18-01 and has 37-08. Casey Ashley is two ounces back of Fritts in 3rd after logging a tournament-best 20-06 that moved him up three places.

Boyd Duckett jumped six spots to 4th with a 17-02 stringer that gives him 33-11 at the halfway point and Josh Bertrand held onto a top-5 position with a 14-11 effort that pushed his total to 33-03.

There are just nine anglers who’ve eclipsed 14 pounds both days and just four who’ve caught 16 or more.

Here's a look at the top 12 after day 2 on the Missouri River, with deficit margin from Daniels indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Mark Daniels, Jr.: 39-00
2. David Fritts: 37-08 (1-08)
3. Casey Ashley: 37-06 (1-10)
4. Boyd Duckett: 33-11 (5-05)
5. Josh Bertrand: 33-03 (5-13)
6. Justin Lucas: 32-14 (6-02)
7. Jordan Lee: 32-07 (6-09)
8. Bradley Roy: 31-08 (7-08)
9. Jacob Wheeler: 30-14 (8-02)
10. Andy Montgomery: 29-14 (9-02)
11. Brent Ehrler: 28-03 (10-13)
12. Caleb Sumrall: 28-01 (10-15)

A half-dozen anglers who weighed less than 9 pounds on day 1 and were 71st or lower on the leaderboard managed to bounce back and make the top-50 cut today. Among them were:

> Clifford Pirch: 87th to 18th
> Robbie Latuso: 81st to 31st
> Jake Whitaker: 79th to 22nd
> Bobby Lane: 74th to 33rd
> Brian Snowden: 73rd to 46th
> Micah Frazier: 71st to 50th

A weight of 10-03 was good enough for 50th after day 1. After today’s weigh-in, 18-04 occupied the last spot inside the cut to get a paycheck, a noticeable drop. The top 12 got spread out as well. After day 1, just 3-03 separated the top spot from 12th place. Heading into day 3, that gap has ballooned to nearly 11 pounds. That speaks to how well a few guys near the top are dialed in.

It also appears as though the shallow bite many keyed on in practice is starting to fade as the smallmouth are heading to deeper water as part of their post-spawn migration in addition to the wind dirtying up many of those same locales. With so much dead water to comb through, finding those areas that harbor those pathways has proven to be a challenge.

The forecast looks clear the rest of the way as sunny skies are on tap for Sunday and Monday with temperatures in the mid 80s for day 3 and reaching the mid 90s for the final day. The wind is due to swing around to the west on Sunday at 10 to 15 mph.

The field will be slimmed down to the top 12 for Monday’s final day of competition.

More of the Same for Daniels

> Day 2: 5, 20-04 (10, 39-00)

Not much changed from day 1 for Daniels. He fished the same areas and threw the same baits. He had some company for a period of time, but that didn’t prevent him from registering the second-biggest stringer of the event.

“I’m hopeful that it will hold up,” he said. “I got fortunate today and caught ‘em good. I split some fish with some guys and hope that doesn’t happen again tomorrow.”

Coming out of practice, he wasn’t sure what the potential was for the areas he’d discovered. Now, he’s hoping there’s enough quality there for two more days.

“I did catch a couple good ones in practice, but you don’t know what you have in practice because you don’t lean on them,” he said.

The morning was when he had the most success today and he had another flurry around mid-day before he left his best area.

“ I think what’s going on is fish are leaving those shallow areas and I think they’re coming to me,” he said. “I’m not 100 percent sure, but I’m hoping they’re coming.”

David Fritts had to fight the wind and waves in addition to the fish today at Oahe.

2nd: Big Ones Still There for Fritts

> Day 2: 5, 18-01 (10, 37-08)

Fritts’ confidence remains strong despite relinquishing the lead. He’s certain he can join the 20-pound club at some point before the tournament is over. He just needs to keep the fish hooked all the way back to the boat.

“I should’ve had another big stringer today, but the wind killed me,” he said. “I was taking waves over the front. It was one of those days. I had them on and had the opportunities. They’re so big and so strong you can’t do anything with them.”

He also experienced something he’d never seen before in his 30-plus years of fishing professionally.

“I actually saw some fish under the surface swimming to where I was fishing,” he said.

They’re the quality of fish he’s looking for, too.

“I think 20-plus is possible. I’ve seen them every day,” he said. “I just haven’t gotten to weigh them in.”

He thinks if the wind will lay off Sunday, he can make more accurate presentations and be able to land more fish.

“I tried some different stuff today, but you can only do so many things when the wind is blowing like that,” he said. “I had to stick with things with a little more weight to it.”

3rd: Ashley Probed Deeper

> Day 2: 5, 20-06 (10, 37-06)

Ashley is a noted target fisherman, but at Oahe visible targets are difficult to locate. He was fortunate enough, however, to locate an area that appears to be harboring a big group of quality fish and he’s mined it pretty effectively for two days now.

“I had the right bait today,” he said, declining to reveal his bait of choice. “I pulled up and caught ‘em quick and let them rest.”

It took him less than 20 minutes to amass his 20-pound stringer and he spent the majority of his day making sure he was the only competitor who got a look at them.

“I just guarded them until 12:30,” he said. “There were a few people around, but nobody came over there.”

Casey Ashley thinks he might not be done weighing in 20-pound stringers this week.

He believes fish are continuing to flow into the area, which has him feeling confident about his prospects for another big day.

“If I get five bites, they’ll weigh 17 to 20 pounds,” he said. “Yesterday, I didn’t know what I was on, but I guess I just hit the tip of the iceberg. I went in with the heavy artillery today and got the job done.

“As an old man back home likes to say, ‘I was on the edge of something big.’”

4th: Duckett Relying on Multiple Spots

> Day 2: 5, 17-02 (10, 33-11)

The challenge for Duckett so far has been figuring out where the fish are heading once they’re done spawning. The barren makeup of Oahe doesn’t square up with much of anything he’s seen before.

He’s been able to locate a few spots where he’s able to catch suspended fish and he hopes he can rotate through them and enough new fish keep showing up.

“It’s a really a neat place because it’s such a different part of the country,” he said. “It looks different than anywhere we’ve ever been. There are no trees other than what’s been planted.

“It’s a different style of fishing and it’s been challenging to figure out what they’re doing because there’s not a lot of stuff to hold on when they come off the bank.”

He knows he’ll need two stellar days to close the gap on Fritts and Daniels. He just hopes his spots will hold up because it’s not a lake where he can effectively fish a pattern.

“From what I saw, there is a pattern to the offshore fish, but you just have to find a place that has them like that,” he said. “There’s a ton of good-looking offshore stuff that has nothing on it. Maybe they haven’t gotten out there yet. but for me, it’s a spot place. I can’t run the lake and do it.”

5th: It was a Grind for Bertrand

> Day 2: 5, 14-11 (10, 33-03)

Bertrand had a tougher day compared to others around him on the leaderboard. His bite total fell off compared to Friday and the big fish never showed themselves.

Boyd Duckett is targeting suspended fish offshore.

“I think the pressure is becoming an issue for sure and having to fish around other boats,” he said. “I’ll still probably try to hammer out what I can in those areas tomorrow. I was able to move around and find a few more areas so hopefully I can get bit there tomorrow.”

After catching 13 pounds and enduring a lengthy lull, he shifted his focus to new water.

“I went to a zone of the lake without any boats just to try it,” he said. “I had nothing to lose and I did make a couple culls there.”

The fishing has been tougher than expected, he said, and thinks those targeting offshore areas are going to ultimately prevail.

“It’s not easy by any means,” he said.

45th: Downsizing Works for McClelland

> Day 2: 5, 9-05 (10, 19-01)

Mike McClelland wasn’t expecting to make the cut after catching two sub-10-pound bags, but he was happy to grab a berth on day 3 in 45th place.

“I really have not caught anywhere near what I thought I could catch after practice,” he said. “I’d say the win has dictated why I haven’t caught them.”

A lot of spots he’d hoped to fish today had been blown out as a result of all the wind.

“A lot of water I’d planned to fish was toasted, chalky and nasty,” he said.

He admitted being fooled somewhat by how far along in the spawning process the fish seem to be.

“The bigger ones that know what they want to do have spawned and have gone out deep,” he said. “ I didn’t come here thinking I’d need to fish that deep for them.”

After getting bites on an assortment of reaction baits in practice and Friday, he had to resort to finesse tactics today as well as other bottom-oriented presentations.

Another challenge has been getting dialed in on what size baits to throw. Fellow competitor Jeff Kriet said a fish he caught in practice spit up a 7-inch smelt, but McClelland has had more success with less bulky baits.

“When you’re fishing for them, it seems like smaller bait tends to work better,” he added.
