Walters Maximized Time By Staying In Port Lake

Patrick Walters is just a few months out of college and his goal is to compete on the Bassmaster Elite Series next year. He took a big step toward that objective last week by winning the Red River Bassmaster Central Open in Louisiana.

The 23-year-old Walters, who graduated from the University of South Carolina last December with degrees in business management and marketing, won the tough-bite derby in sweltering heat with an average of just over 10 pounds per day. He and FLW Tour pro Zack Birge, who finished 7th, were the only competitors to weight a limit on all 3 days.

"I knew 10 pounds a day would be a top-5 (finish), guaranteed," said Walters, who'd competed on the venue just 2 weeks previously when he and a fellow Gamecock placed 24th out of 168 teams in the FLW College Championship. "I was thinking it might take 11 or 12 pounds to win.

"Each day was different and the pieces just kind of fell together for me. Every day when I went out it was 50/50 whether I was even going to catch a single fish, but then something would happen and I'd get dialed into the moment. I'd go 3 hours without a bite, but then I'd catch one off a piece of wood and throw right back and catch another one."

His 30-15 total eclipsed runner-up Drew Cook by 2-05. The win moved him up to 10th place on the Central points list with only the September event at Logan Martin Lake remaining, which means he'll need to climb another five slots to ensure himself of a 2019 Elite berth.

Port Lake was the Place

Walters returned to Louisiana with a strong notion that he'd focus his efforts in the Open on Port Lake, near the launch in Bossier City. The Red River isn't presently teeming with bass, but he believed that Port held as substantial a population as anywhere, plus the fish caught in the FLW College event had been released there and many likely hadn't yet integrated back into other parts of the system.

As an added bonus, Port had been off-limits for competitors in the college derby and thus had received much less recent pressure than other areas.

He sampled other places during practice, mostly without success. He'd return to Port each day and could get a couple of bites in a half-hour's fishing – a feat that seemingly couldn't be duplicated in 2 hours anywhere else.

"That slowly built my confidence," he said. "I knew that was where I had to stay."

On the competition days, he spent most of his time on a stretch of bank that he estimated as well over a mile long. He shared it with numerous other competitors, but the vast majority of them were flipping. He threw a Texas-rigged 5-inch Senko (both weightless or with a 1/8-ounce sinker) and a selection of crankbaits.

He primarily targeted isolated wood on flats that had ditches running through them. The most productive pieces were displaced stumps with their roots showing.

"I'd make fan casts down the bank (with a square-bill crankbait) and when I'd come to a piece of wood and put my Power-Poles down about 10 yards away from it and make 10 or 15 casts to it, then I'd get closer and make casts from different angles.

"I'd do that down the whole stretch and then go back and do it again from a different angle. After that I'd go hit some main-river breaks and jetties and then run back and fish it again after it had some time to settle down."

He believes that most of his bites were borne of aggravation rather than the fish's desire to eat.

"They wouldn't choke (the crankbait) – they never had it in their crushers. There'd be just one barb in their lip.

"They didn't really want to bite. I had to just repeatedly antagonize them and get them to the point where they'd just swat at it."

He caught an 8 1/2-pound bag on day 1 that put him in 23rd place. His 11-11 haul the following day jumped him all the way to 2nd, less than a pound behind Kenta Kimura. His 10-11 stringer on the final day was plenty to claim the win as Kimura managed just three fish for 4-02.

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – "Definitely having all that time (by fishing close to the launch) because it took all day to catch fish."

> Performance edge – "Everything played a big role. The Power-Poles were big because they allowed me to pick the cover apart and I need to give a shout out to my Relion Batteries. They're lithium, and I could keep the trolling motor on 10 all day long and they'd never draw down and I could keep my livewell pumping 8 hours a day in that water that was 87 to 94 degrees. I never had to worry about killing fish and that was big because in this tournament, ounces mattered."
