After finishing 27th at the Kentucky Lake Central FLW Series last year, Jake Lawrence made a pact with himself that he wouldn’t fall prey to the mesmerizing potential of the Tennessee River ledges, where throngs of anglers gather in hopes of locating and plundering schools of largemouth in the midst of their post-spawn recovery process.

It was a losing proposition, he figured, so he instead committed to going against the grain and, should the venue be on the 2018 schedule, would attempt to locate off-the-wall and oddball locations where tournament-worthy bass would still congregate. Having years of experience at Kentucky Lake and elsewhere on the TVA system, he felt confident under the right scenario his strategy could pay off.

As it happened, he got his wish and his plan came together. Over three days last week, Lawrence made the lengthy journey from Barkley State Park over to Kentucky Lake and down past the Highway 68 bridge where he mined shallow bars in 7 to 14 feet to the tune of 72-04, nearly eclipsing the three-day FLW Series weight record for Kentucky Lake.

The 27-year-old boat salesman from Paris, Tenn., set the tone with a 28-15 stringer on day 1, then capitalized on some favorable conditions to go home with the victory.

“As tired as I was Saturday night, I still couldn’t go to bed,” Lawrence said. “It was another midnight or 1 o’clock night before going to sleep and being in the habit of being up early, I was back up at 5 Sunday.

“I’ve fished for a long time for things to come together (like that). From the first day of practice, I just had that feeling.”

Shallow-Minded

In the weeks leading up to the FLW Series event, Kentucky Lake saw plenty of tournament pressure from the Elite Series and FLW Tour to all the local events that take place there. On top of that, the Tennessee River valley received a bunch of rain, courtesy of Tropical Storm Alberto.

“That caused the fish to get off the river channel,” Lawrence said, noting the water level came up rapidly.

“When (Jason) Lambert won, the fish were just starting to get out and there were only a handful of schools out there. You just had to be persistent and look for them – they were fresh and unpressured,” he added. “Most of the fish after the Tour event left the river channel and went to shallow bars and scattered.”

Lawrence grew concerned because that’s not a scenario he’s comfortable with. Once the current picked up as the TVA worked to move the water through the system, those fish started to school up on the shallow bars and that played right into his comfort zone.

Conditions on Sunday before the tournament were “atrocious,” he said. “There were 4-footers everywhere so I was confined to certain areas.”

He put in at four different ramps during the day and the rough conditions forced him to slow down, which helped him find the area that he ultimately focused on.

“In 4 days, I might’ve made 100 casts, just to get up and stretch my back and do something different,” he said. “I wasn’t really testing anything. I’m very proficient with my electronics and on my Humminbird Solix 15, I know what a school of 4s versus a school of 2s looks like. That forced me to really look in some oddball places that I’d never looked at.”

One place in particular that stood out was an area he’d marked a few fish on about 5 years ago near the mouth of the Blood River.

“This was not a brand new place to me and it’s not a place they live on, but the conditions have to be just right,” he said. “I was very fortunate that this school stayed or stuck around longer than others I found on this pattern. It was just a perfect scenario with a shallow bar that topped out at 12 feet. It was 14 on the up-river side and 16 to 18 on the back side. It ran perpendicular to the current and ran into the bank.”

He described it as a wing-dam scenario, although much deeper.

“I knew immediately when I rode over that school, I could run this pattern all up the lake,” he added. “I felt like guys were so ledge-focused that they weren’t going to find these. I would’ve never been scanning down that bank had it not been so rough. I wanted to find constructive ways to look at it.”

By the end of practice, he had about a dozen places that were similar.

One Spot Held Up

Lawrence started the tournament in Sandy Creek and had three keepers for just over 6 pounds before bolting around 10 a.m. He checked three shallow spots, but came up empty. With the current flow slacking off, he was worried his shallow bar program was fading away.

He then moved to the spot in the Blood River and his spirits were lifted.

“I stopped 75 yards short,” he said. “That was critical in getting these schools to bite because once you idle over them, you can’t catch them. They’re incredibly motor-shy regardless if they’re 10 feet or 35 feet deep. It doesn’t matter, they know what’s up.”

He got lined up on his cast and on his first effot with a scrounger-head jig rigged with a 7-inch Castaic Jerky J, he leaned into an 8 1/2-pounder.

“For 30 minutes, I smashed them,” he said.

Once they wised up to the scrounger jig, he switched to a magnum finesse worm on a swing-head jig and the action picked up again.

“I couldn’t drag it 2 feet without a bite,” he added. “If I made two or three casts with the same bait and didn’t get a bite, they’re just down there looking at it.”

It wasn’t long before he had nearly 29 pounds in his livewell.

“It was chaos,” he added.

Sensing he needed to manage the area for the next day, he went looking for other options.

“I still thought it’d be over the next day because all of the other places had gone barren,” he noted. “Since they had gotten on this pattern, nobody idled over them and nobody fished them so they went 7 to 10 days without seeing a bait. Finding a school or pattern that allow them to get away from anywhere else, that’s such a big key now.”

On day 2, he boxed 23-10 in less than an hour of fishing the same spot in the Blood River, including a 5-pounder on his first cast and a 7-pounder he almost shook off because there were a lot of other boats in the area practicing for tournaments that were scheduled for Saturday.

After his co-angler reeled in his dropshot rig, he left the line dangling over the side and through the course of fighting his fish, Lawrence’s line got tangled in the dropshot weight. He knew if he applied any additional pressure, the line would break. They were able to get the fish in the net and in the boat. Moments later, Lawrence tugged on his line to test its integrity and it broke.

In hopes of saving the area for one more day, he vacated it and went looking for new schools on shallow bars.

“This school gave me the opportunity to look at fresh places during the tournament,” he said. “To have 4 or 5 hours each day to look around was key.”

On days 1 and 2, he caught one upgrade on spots he found during the day.

He carried a lead of 8-10 into the final day and he knew it was his tournament to lose. He had concerns, though. Would there be somebody sitting on his spot? Would the fish still be there?

“You can’t imagine the weight that was lifted off my shoulders when I got there and nobody was sitting there,” he said. “They’d really backed the current off, though. It was almost nonexistent. I was really concerned about that. I had schools to fall back on, but I was in the same boat as other guys, who were fishing schools where you couldn’t get them to bite.”

With his father and uncle looking on, Lawrence had to grind his way through the final day. The fish had moved a little bit, but he was able to relocate them.

“I wasn’t panicking in the least,” he said. “They got off the (scrounger) head bite and I had to go exclusively with the worm. It was a lot slower. Instead of getting a bite every third cast, it was every 10 casts. I landed six of them. I had a 15 1/2-incher that I culled with a 3 pounder around 8:15.”

From there, he did a 20-mile loop around the lake, but was unable to get on another spot to fish due to fishing pressure. He was looking for other options, but he was also allowing those fish to set back up.

“By 8 a.m., I knew as long as I made it back to check in, I had it won,” he said. “I knew it was mine to lose. At that point, I wanted to break the record. I knew what lived there and wanted to make it happen.”

He returned to the spot in the Blood River, but it suddenly went cold. He decided to idle over it and no marks appeared on his screen.

“There was nothing left,” he said. “They stayed long enough for me to catch five keepers and then they left.”

He said he had a big fish on later in the day that maybe would’ve given him the record, but it pulled off.

Winning Pattern Notes

> Lawrence said along with other factors, the calm conditions during the tournament were a huge key in his success. It allowed him to make the 200-mile round-trip run to and from his best area without incident.

“You never get 3 days in a row on Kentucky Lake without some wind or rough water,” he said. “It was glass calm. Before I could get to the tubs on day 3, the wind picked up and it was white-capping. Everything just fell perfect for me.”

> Of the 15 fish he weighed in, 11 were caught on the swing-head jig, two were on the scrounger head and two were caught with a hair jig.

Here's a look at the variety of baits that excelled for Lawrence last week at Kentucky Lake.

Winning Gear Notes

> Scrounger-head gear: 7’6” heavy-action Hammer Rods swimbait rod, Daiwa Tatula casting reel (6.3:1 ratio), 12-pound Seaguar InvizX fluorocarbon line, 3/4-oz. Jenko Fishing Tennessee River Tremor Jig Head (medium bill), 7” Castaic Jerky J (green shad).

> Wobble-head gear: 7’6” heavy-action Hammer Rods casting rod, same reel, same line (15-pound), 3/4-oz. JaKKed Baits JawJaKKer Swing Head, 10” V&M Baits J-Mag Worm (redbug).

> In addition to supergluing the bait to the Tremor Head, Lawrence noted he changed out the snap on the Tremor Head to a trout snap and also inserted a tooth pick through the side of the bait just above the hook to prevent the plastic from ripping.

> He also caught two of his weigh-in fish on a homemade hair jig.

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – “I spent 90 percent of my practice looking at the 8- to 12-foot range, something that wasn’t getting fished. Without that one school, there’s no chance I win. Would I have cashed a check? Yes, but I separated myself on day 1 and I had a handful of off-the-wall spots to go with it.”

> Performance edge – “My Phoenix and Mercury package. I couldn’t have made that run 3 days in a row without that. I have the 21PHX and that was the most critical piece of equipment along with the Humminbird Solix units. Without those, I could ride around all day and not find them.”
