Wesley Strader said he woke up Sunday morning thinking he was still dreaming.

“I looked at my wife and said, ‘How did that just happen,’” Strader recalled.

By that, he meant how exactly did he pull off the victory at the Lake Norman Eastern Open with just one abbreviated day of practice time and just five days removed from capturing the win at the Kentucky Lake Elite Series.

Okay, Wesley, so how did you do it?

“It’s just one of those things and I don’t know how to explain it,” he said. “I went back to the roots of how I like to fish and decided to go as far up this thing as I can. When I got there, I made one cast and caught a 6-pounder. I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m fishing there in the tournament.’”

No exaggeration, that’s how Strader’s practice day at Norman went. After figuring out he could get some bites on Norman’s innumerable docks, he opted to run up the Catawba River to the tailrace beneath the Lookout Shoals Dam. One cast with a spinnerbait – the same exact spinnerbait he used at Kentucky Lake – yielded a 6-pound largemouth.

“I just went blind,” he said. “I found the dock deal was pretty easy. Norman is known for docks and I thought maybe I could catch 10 or 11 pounds doing that. When I ran up there and did that in the tailrace, I had no idea what was there. I’d just caught that one, but it like at home and I said, ‘I’m gonna roll with this.’”

He didn’t need to see anything else. The scenario felt familiar to him, like back home on the TVA lakes he fishes near Spring City, Tenn.

“I’m thinking about throwing it at (Lake) Travis,” Strader joked, referring to this week’s Elite Series event in Texas.

While his 40-00 total over three days was a pretty modest winning weight, it was nearly 4 pounds better than runner-up Jared Lintner, despite Strader only weighing three fish on the final day.

So after posting four tournament wins between B.A.S.S. and FLW from 1997-2016, Strader has two victories in the last two weeks and is now seeking to become probably the first pro to have a shot at three wins in three weeks.

“It’s unreal – I can’t even put it into words,” he said. “You always think it’d be awesome to win this one or that one, but then it happens and it’s hard to put it into words.”

Here are some more details about how Strader conquered Lake Norman.

Practice

Strader competed in five FLW Tour events at Norman, finishing 3rd at the Tour Invitational in September 2016 (the other four were staged in the spring between 2007-10).

During his lone practice day last Wednesday, he fiddled around skipping docks before opting to take an exploratory ride up the Catawba. He’d never ventured up the river in his previous trips to Norman. He flipped some trees along the bank on his way toward the dam and noticed the water had some color to it.

“When I got to the bridges, I saw there was some current and I wanted to see what it was look near the dam,” he said. “I idled up and said, ‘This looks a lot like back home.’ I pulled up and fired a spinnerbait into a seam and caught that big one.

“I thought it was a striper at first, but it wasn’t fighting like a striper. Then it came up and I was like, ‘Holy crap! That’s a giant!’”

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 13-13
> Day 2: 5, 17-06
> Day 3: 3, 8-13
> Total = 13, 40-00

On day 1 of the tournament, Strader had some company near the dam as Roland Martin, John Cox and Allen Brooks all fished near the tail race. Only Strader survived until the final day.

When he arrived on Thursday, the current hadn’t picked up as the water wasn’t moving through the dam yet.

“It was like, ‘Holy cow,’ but every once in a while you could catch one,” he said.

He threw a 5-inch hollow-body swimbait on a weighted hook in the same vicinity where he caught the 6-pounder in practice. He missed a bite, then connected with a 3-pounder after he reeled up the slack on the same retrieve.

The water started moving shortly thereafter and he finished off a 12-pound limit with a spinnerbait cast into current seams.

“There were a couple of spots where you could see the seam,” he said. “The other spots had water breaking over rocks. You couldn’t throw and wind it back. It was almost like fly fishing. You had to let if flutter through the rocks and you had to cast off to the side and let the water carry it along.

“You’d be winding and feel it came over a rock and that’s when it tightened up or they nearly took it out of my hand.”

He later moved back to the lake to flip outside bushes – “It looked like Kentucky Lake,” he said – and caught a 3-pounder to upgrade to 13-13.

“I figured 12 to 15 would be good,” he said. “That’s why I decided to fish other stuff. I thought I’d be in good shape because I figured there would be a lot of 13-pound stringers.”

Actually, there were only eight bags that weighed 13 or more pounds and Strader was in 6th after day 1.

When he zoomed back to the dam to start day 2, the current was already ripping and it didn’t take him long to get dialed in.

“What I noticed is the baitfish wouldn’t get up there until the water started moving and the shade lines helped,” he said. “The lower light helped.”

With the sun still obscured by the trees along the banks, Strader had 17 pounds in his boat before 10 a.m., all on a spinnerbait except one, which was caught on the swimbait.

He headed back down lake in hopes to find a backup plan for the final day. Not much materialized and his 17-06 bag catapulted him into the lead entering day 3. He was one of just five competitors to exceed 13 pounds on Friday and he enjoyed a 5-02 cushion over Lintner.

A heavy rain overnight Friday – Strader called it “a frog strangler” – caused him a little concern about what it would do to the water in the river, but he lucked out. The current-heavy stretch beneath the dam wasn’t red mud like some sections of the river were.

“I didn’t think it had rained much. I thought it was a passing shower,” he said. “Some of the places I was counting on for backup were red mud. The place where I ended up catching them was fine.”

As far as nerves and a chance to pull off a second straight win, he said he was unfazed by it all.

“I wasn’t nervous at all,” he said. “I knew what was going on. We’d beat on (the area) pretty hard, but I was the only one throwing a spinnerbait. I knew if they ran water, I’d have five or six bites like I was getting and have a chance to catch what I had.”

The water didn’t start moving until about 9 a.m. the final day. By then, Strader had already broke off a good-sized fish – “It was my fault,” he admitted. He waited about 15 minutes for the current to pick up, then got his boat positioned where he wanted it.

“I throw in there and catch a 2-pounder and lose a 5,” he said. “The way it worked was you got two bites and had to let the spot rest for at least 30 minutes.”

He moved toward the middle of the tail race and then over toward the bank where he coaxed a 2 3/4-pounder with a spinnerbait from a shady stretch.

“I went back out the first seam again and on my first cast I caught a 4-plus and that was it,” he said. “I kept saying ‘Just keep casting. These aren’t average fish like down lake. These are the winning bites.’ I had to keep casting. I was the only boat up there and there was no wind and it was a bluebird sky. Each fish was hooked on the trailer hook so the conditions are probably why it was a little tougher.”

He wound up with 8-13 and figured Lintner would need a big stringer to overtake him.

“On the way in, I hoping I didn’t give it away,” he said. “I knew I had about 9 and that meant Lintner needed 14 to past me. That had only been done three times and it’s so hard to follow up big stringers down the lake there. Lintner’s a great angler and he could’ve done it.”

Winning Pattern Notes

> Strader said decision making was key to maximizing his time below the dam.

“It was one of those things where you had to keep throwing and throwing,” he said. “It wasn’t easy. I’d catch two, let it rest, go to another little spot, catch two, then leave it for an hour. The whole deal was knowing when to leave. I thought on the last day I kind of messed up because I stuck with it. I had the same number of bites I’d had, but the two biggest ones I hooked I lost on day 3.”

> Of the 13 fish he weighed, 11 were largemouths and two were spotted bass.

Winning Gear Notes

> Spinnerbait gear: 7’5” medium-heavy Powell Endurance cranking rod, Team Lew's Pro Magnesium Speed Spool casting reel (6.8:1 ratio), 16-pound Gamma Edge fluorocarbon line, 5/8-oz. Stan Sloan’s Zorro Bait Company Bango Blade spinnerbait (chartreuse white), Zoom Split Tail trailer (pearl white).

> Flipping gear: 7’9” mag medium-heavy Powell Endurance casting rod, same reel (7.5:1 ratio), same line (20-pound), 5/16-oz. Reins Tungsten worm weight, 5/0 Lazer TroKar TK130 flippin hook, Zoom Z Hog (green-pumpkin).

> Swimbait gear: 7’6” mag medium-heavy Powell Endurance casting rod, same reel as spinnerbait, same line as spinnerbait, 5/0 Lazer TroKar 1/4-oz. swimbait hook, 5” Zoom Bait Co. swimmer (shad).

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – “Just going with my gut and doing what my gut tells you do. That’s what I always do. It doesn’t always pan out like this.”

> Performance edge – “I turned my HydroWave on Power Pattern. I swear it worked. Other guys weren’t catching as much, but for my confidence, I swear it helps so much.”
