While many anglers who excelled on day 1 struggled to duplicate their success on day 2 at Kentucky Lake, Skeet Reese kept chugging along.

The California pro became the only competitor to reach the 20-pound mark two days in a row and his 21-10 stringer today helped him open up a more than 4 1/2-pound lead entering day 3. His 45-05 total is 4-11 better than Fred Roumbanis’ and puts him in position to go after his sixth career Elite Series victory.

Roumbanis caught 22-11 today to move up 25 places to 2nd with 40-10. Shaw Grigsby had another solid day with a 20-13 stringer, which was anchored by a 7-11 kicker, to move into 3rd with 40-09.

Jason Christie jumped up one spot to 4th with 39-12 after bagging 18-15. His travel mate Edwin Evers caught 19-12 to improve 11 spots to 5th with 39-02.

For the second day in a row, nine anglers hit the 20-pound mark, but it was a struggle for some on a day when conditions changed significantly.

Here's a look at the top 12 entering the third day of competition, with deficit margin from Reese indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Skeet Reese: 45-05
2. Fred Roumbanis: 40-10 (4-11)
3. Shaw Grigsby: 40-09 (4-13)
4. Jason Christie: 39-12 (5-09)
5. Edwin Evers: 39-02 (6-03)
6. Chad Pipkens: 38-10 (6-11)
7. Bobby Lane: 38-09 (6-13)
8. Boyd Duckett: 38-02 (7-03)
9. Skylar Hamilton: 38-01 (7-04)
10. Aaron Martens: 37-05 (8-00)
11. Wesley Strader: 37-03 (8-02)
12. Jordan Lee: 36-14 (8-07)

Day-1 leader Chris Zaldain fell two fish short of a limit and his 7-02 dropped him to 40th. Paul Elias also had a rough go of it, weighing in four fish for 9-04 to drop from 9th to 55th, missing the top-50 cut by 6 ounces.

Kelley Jaye (3rd to 26th), Gerald Swinde (7th to 19th), Josh Bertrand (8th to 24th) and David Walker (12th to 33rd) also dropped out of the top 12 after stellar day-1 efforts.

Boyd Duckett made up 52 spots with a day-best 24-00 stringer that pushed him into 8th. Aaron Martens caught 22-07 to improve 45 places to 10th with 37-05. Rookie Randy Sullivan improved 44 spots to 27th and clinched his first top-50 cut of the season with a 20-08 stringer.

After Friday brought sunshine and wind, day 2 offered a different batch of conditions with rain, little to no wind and very little current. Add in a lake full of bass in all three phases of the spawn and it’s understandable why confidence amongst the leaders seems to be in short supply.

The forecast for Sunday calls for partly cloudy skies with a slight west wind and temperatures in the low 80s.

Only the top 12 after day 3 will move on to Monday, when the winner will be determined by the highest cumulative weight.

Morning Flurry for Reese

> Day 2: 5, 21-10 (10, 45-05)

Reese solved the early-morning bite today. Now, he needs to figure out the afternoon timeframe at Kentucky Lake.

After struggling for the first couple hours on Friday, Reese had a limit by 8 a.m. today and all of his weigh-in fish by 10. He said the shad spawn in certain areas had the bass in feed mode.

“The shad spawn was everything,” Reese said in a press release issued by B.A.S.S. “They’re feeding for the first four hours of the day, but the last two days we’ve had cloud cover, which probably extended the bite.”

A jerkbait, swimbait and square-bill crankbait accounted for his keepers with the crankbait playing a key role today.

“The whole key is getting the bait to deflect,” Reese said in the release. “If your bait’s not deflecting off the bottom, for the most part, you’re not getting the bites. The key is triggering these fish. It’s typical post-spawn.”

Now the trick will be how to capitalize after the shad spawn activity dies down. He plans to revisit some of the same areas he’s already fished, but with other competitors starting to get dialed in, he knows the pressure is on to maintain his current pace.

“I have to readjust in the afternoon,” he said in a recap video posted on his Facebook page. “I know what I’m going to do in the morning, but the afternoon is where I have to make some adjustments because I have to catch 20 again if I’m going to have a shot to win this (Monday).”

Fred Roumbanis is in position to make his second straight top-12 cut.

The highlight of his day came in the morning when he hooked a 5-11 on a jerkbait. During the fight, the kill switch cord attached to his PFD got tangled in the handle of his casting reel. While maintaining pressure on the fish, he carefully untangled the cord from his reel handle and wound up landing the fish.

“What a train wreck; I couldn’t make another turn on the reel handle,” he said. “When you have a 5 1/2-pounder jumping in front of you and you can’t turn the reel handle, it’s like ugh.”

2nd: Roumbanis Had to Slow Down

> Day 2: 5, 22-11 (10, 40-10)

For Roumbanis, it took having to pull out a spinning rod today after a slow morning to figure out that wasn’t how he was going to compete and possibly contend for a win this weekend.

“I gave up on the swimbait bite and made a pass through some water I fished Friday and didn’t get a bite,” he said.

He wound up catching a 2-pounder and a 3-pounder on a shaky head, but he knew those weren’t the fish he needed.

“I caught dinks compared to what lives here so I decided I had to get back out and do swimbait thing,” he said.

He wound up finishing the day how he started – with a swimbait tied on – but he discovered a slower presentation was necessary to trigger bites under the cloudy, rainy conditions.

“It was a grind,” he said. “It wasn’t easy. It started off like a train wreck. I thought I needed wind, but that didn’t matter. I just had to slow way down.”

He said the conditions Friday allowed him to catch fish in a variety of scenarios, but the fish in those areas today suspended off the bottom and that required him to alter how he presented the Optimum Boom Boom Swimbait that he designed.

“I figured out how to fish it better,” he said. “I learned from my mistakes this morning and learned what I needed to do to make a change. You have to just crawl it. A lot of guys don’t fish it right and maybe that’s why they don’t throw it. I told my marshal that more guys would fish it if they fished with me.”

He thinks he’s catching a mix of pre- and post-spawn bass and he hopes there are more on their way to his areas Sunday.

“If you can intercept them on these channel swings, you’re hitting a home run,” he said. “Hopefully they’ll continue to bite for me.”

3rd: Grigsby Still Looking

> Day 2: 5, 20-13 (10, 40-09)

There’s no telling what the leaderboard would look like today had the Tennessee Valley Authority not released all the water out of Kentucky Lake earlier this week during the practice session for the Elite Series.

Grigsby is fairly certain he’d be close to where he’s at now, though, because of the amount of fish that were on beds or close to locking on. A renowned sight-fisherman, Grigsby has maneuvered his way into the top 3 by picking off bedding fish, but he fears his opportunities are starting to dry up – literally.

Shaw Grigsby pulled in the top 5 today thanks, in part, to his 7-11 kicker.

“I was really catching them the first day of practice,” he said. “I had close to 30 pounds and was thinking I was going to catch them, but day 2 rolled around and they sucked the bottom of this place. Now, it’s brutal. It’s finally settled down, but it’s still tough. A lot of beds I had are dry.”

He’s stuck with it through two days and has limited confidence in the alternatives.

“When I came in today, I said, ‘I feel like I’m in a gun fight and picked off everybody, but one and I ran out of bullets.’ I have to run with it. If you go and find one or two that makes all the difference because they could be 7- or 8-pounders. I have to keep looking and pitching.

“I’ll probably fish some of the water leading into and out of those pockets – those little transition zones. I have to prepare for everything. There are obviously fish moving out and if you get on the right deal you can mash them. I’ve tried a number of them, but haven’t had to make it work.”

He said the 7-11 was by itself and it took him about 45 minutes to finally get her to eat his bait.

“I was going down a stretch of bushes and I see a bass and it’s a good one,” he said. “I was hoping it would hang out because my first pitch got tangled up in the bushes. She came back and settled down. I knew it would be a 5-pounder, but when I set the hook it got bigger. I was just happy to catch a fish like that.”

4th: Christie Has Concerns

> Day 2: 5, 18-15 (10, 39-12)

Christie doesn’t want anybody to be fooled by what the leaderboard says. Sure, he’s caught nearly 40 pounds worth of bass over two days, but it’s been far from easy.

“It is a (serious) grind,” he said. “I probably caught the same amount of fish today (eight or nine keepers), but I just don’t have anything else worth doing. I’ve gotten more comfortable doing what I’m doing than trying something else. I spent almost 10 hours today with the trolling motor down just fishing.”

He’s relied on a six-rod assortment and will continue on the same course as long as he can. He thinks he’ll need another stringer in the 20-pound range Sunday to stay in contention.

“I caught one sight-fishing then one on a buzzbait,” he said. “I’m just fishing and not running around crazy.”

He caught his first three fish fairly early, then felt himself starting to fish faster.

“I started to tell myself they were all caught yesterday,” he said. “Then I caught my big one and I was able to put it back in cruise mode.

“The bad thing is I think what I’m doing is going away and what other guys are doing is going to get better. I know what’s going on and with the sun tomorrow, I think it’s going to be a tougher day. There is 8 to 10 pounds where I’m fishing and there’s 25, but to catch 25 you have to have the perfect day.”

5th: Change Paid Off for Evers

> Day 2: 5, 19-12 (10, 39-02)

Evers changed his approach today compared to day 1, but got similar results and is now a contender, albeit six pounds behind Reese.

“I’m really happy to be where I’m at,” he said. “I had a decent period in the morning, then went through a long lull. Then I caught some later in the afternoon. It all happened in spurts.”

He said knowing the fish are in all three phases of the spawn makes it difficult to concentrate on one particular aspect.

Edwin Evers is seeking to win his second Elite Series title at Kentucky Lake this week.

“It’s just different from any other time I’ve been here,” he said. “I've always been here in June when they’re out offshore. There could be some offshore stuff that comes into play before it’s all said and done. There’s a lot going on.

“I’m confident in what I’m doing, but it’s a slippery slope that I’m on.”

32nd: Combs Abandoned Bushes

> Day 2: 5, 20-00 (9, 33-05)

Keith Combs got caught chasing a pattern Friday that was fading away so he made an adjustment today and wound up with one of the nine 20-pound stringers.

“Today was a good day,” he said. “I’d been focusing on flipping bushes, but it got too shallow in there. I was getting plenty of bites in practice but it went away.”

He turned his focus to the first deep water out away from the bushes – points or ditches – in the same pockets.

“I ran a lot of water and hit one where it was happening and a lot more where it wasn’t happening,” he said. “I feel like I understand where the fish I was catching went to. It feels good to make a good decision because I hadn’t made one yet this year.”

He said he lost a couple fish, including one in the 5-pound range, that would’ve padded his weight today.

88th: Nothing Worked for Monti

> Day 2: 1, 3-04 (6, 21-13)

Kyle Monti had little reason to think the pattern that produced 18-09 for him on Friday was going to evaporate in an instant on day 2, but it did.

The rookie from Florida had targeted areas out away from bushes that were holding fish in practice when the water was elevated. Today, those areas just didn’t produce in the same manner.

“It was the first little deeper water or first points or bars they’d go during practice,” he said. “I just couldn’t get bit today. I went to a place where I caught three or four yesterday. It was an offshore spot in a big creek and it had a lot of fish on it. I spent two hours there. (Josh) Bertrand and Swindle were there Friday and we all struggled today.”

His lone keeper today was a smallmouth.

“It was a bad day,” he added. “Guys who caught small limits were doing one thing and sticking with it. I was trying to figure out how to catch 18 or 19 again and kept changing and changing.”

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 108 anglers, 70 limits (12 fewer than yesterday), 20 fours, 11 threes, 4 twos, 2 ones, 1 zero.

> Rick Clunn recorded a zero today, but said he had three 15-inch keepers at the end of the day. He opted to release the fish rather than “put them through the drama of weigh-in,” he added.

> Reigning Angler of the Year Brandon Palaniuk made his first cut of the season in 45th place.

> Kevin VanDam, the winner last week at Grand Lake and a two-time Elite Series champion at Kentucky Lake, had four fish today and finished 54th, six ounces out of 50th.
