When Matt Baty caught "only" 20 pounds on the second and final day of competition at the wather-shortened Lake Seminole Southeastern FLW Series, he figured his chances of winning were pretty slim. He'd started the day a pound and a half behind fellow Seminole ace Rick Tindell, and he was certain that Tindell's haul would at least equal his own.
"He doesn't fish that many of the big tournaments, but when he does fish one, he's usually on a school of big ones," Baty said of Tindell. "I figured I'd have to really bust them to beat him."
However, Tindell's final-day stringer was about 10 pounds lighter than the one he'd brought to the scale the previous day. That allowed 38-year-old Baty to snare the victory and the $56,200 winner's share of the purse.
"I don't know if his fish didn't bite that day or what," said Baty, a former American Bass Anglers National Angler of the Year. He's a super-outstanding guy and I was thinking that if he beat me, he deserved it and I'd shake his hand.
"It turned out it was my day."
Baty's two-day total of 45-00 eclipsed Tindell's mark by a little over 2 pounds. It was his second victory in FLW competition at Seminole - he also triumphed in a BFL in May 2015.
Plentiful Knowledge
Baty possesses a great deal of knowledge about Seminole - as well he should, considering that the Bainbridge, Ga. resident guides there about 100 days per year. He found his primary area, a creek-channel bend, several weeks prior to the tournament.
He checked on it just before the majority of the field rolled into town and the fish were still there.
"It's typical wintertime spot, but we'd had some rain and the current coming down Spring Creek will draw them in there as well," said Baty, who also operates a lawn-care service called Grassy Cutz. "The current had to be what made them stay because, with the full moon, they should've been gone (toward the spawning beds.
"The place has some grass and a little shell bed and they were hanging around there feeding in the morning. I knew that's where I had to start each day."
The fish were holding in water that was 15 to 18 feet deep and he kept his boat at a depth of about 8 feet. He began each day throwing a crankbait, then switched to a bladed jig once the bite slowed down a little. He pulled out early on the first day, after catching about 21 pounds in the initial hour, in an effort to conserve fish for day 2.
His secondary locale was a large sand bar where he caught fish on a Carolina rig and a soft stickbait.
His day-1 bag was topped by a 6-pounder that he'd also caught on one of his scouting days.
"I'd foul-hooked it in the eye the first time," he said. "I knew it was the same fish the second time because of the messed-up eye."
Pretty Happy Right Now
Like most anglers who've had a good bit of success at lower levels, Baty wouldn't mind trying his hand as a tour pro at some point. If that doesn't come about, though, he won't fret much.
He and wife Lisa are the parents of a 6-year-old boy named Fisher and he's not altogether keen on spending a great deal of time away from home.
"If I got invited, we'd have to sit down as a family and think about it," he said. "I'm a family guy and I like running my business - my dad helps me with it and we've got a full-time guy who's been with us quite awhile and one of my best friends works with me sometimes.
"If my whole family agreed and I had some sponsor money to help with the entry fees, I'd like to try it. But I'm very happy with the way things are and I love fishing the (Series). You get to fish against some of the Tour pros like J.T. Kenney, Bryan Thrift and Buddy Gross, but you don't have to spend so much time away from home."

The Bottom Line
> Main factor in his success - "Everybody who knows me knows I fish a hundred miles an hour, wide open, and I love to crank, but I made myself slow down and throw that rig. One of the guys running a camera boat was a guy I knew and he said he'd never seen me fish that slow. I told him I never said I couldn't do it, I just said I didn't like it."
> Performance edge - "Using a little bit of Spike-It aerosol garlic oil scent on my baits. I just sprayed a little bit on the tail whenever I didn't get a bite for about 15 minutes and it always seemed like I'd get one right away."
