Shaun Bailey pulled up along some shoreline he called "one of the worst banks on the lake," and within 15 minutes he counted a half-dozen bass boats that had curiously congregated in the same vicinity. Bailey noted they appeared to be idling, possibly hoping to pick up the scent of whatever Bailey was after. Little did they know he was totally bluffing.
That a group of other competitors in last week's Lake Havasu Western FLW Series was eye-balling him in practice didn't come as a surprise. After all, Bailey is a local resident and full-time guide on Havasu and his wrapped boat made him an easy mark on the popular desert reservoir.
"I did it on purpose," Bailey said. "For 5 days leading up to the tournament, I didn't go to one good spot. I was just going through the motions. I couldn't sit at home – I'd feel guilty, so I looked for something off the wall or an area that I would've normally overlooked. I just tried to stay with it."
Bailey did much of his prep work well before the bulk of the 154-boat field descended upon Havasu, but it was his decision to focus exclusively on staging largemouth around deep brush piles that swung the outcome of the event in his favor. He averaged a little more than 16 pounds per day to capture his first big win at his home lake, erasing a 10-ounce deficit on the final day and holding off day-3 surges from Californians David Valdivia and Justin Kerr.
"As far as career accomplishments go, this is definitely the biggest win I've had," Bailey said. "I've been close a couple times, either at the U.S. Open or in FLW events, but this is definitely my biggest. I've won boats before, but nothing compares to a big FLW tournament."
Relying heavily on his experience and local knowledge, Bailey opted to skip the smallmouth patterns that have helped others to victories at Havasu in the past. He'd been hoping for cold-weather conditions, but a warming trend leading up to the tournament led a lot of competitors to target smallmouth.
"Smallmouth are good until the pressure shows up," Bailey said. "You have 150 pros and co-anglers getting three to five bites a day - the lake doesn't do well under that pressure, especially the smallmouth. They're up shallow and staging. My experience told me to not go after smallmouth, so I went with my gut to go after deeper largemouth."

Practice
Bailey said with the FLW Series tournament usually slotted on the calendar for early to mid February, it makes it a challenge to prepare being that the lake is always changing with the weather patterns.
"It seems like every year it's different and it's always tough," he said.
Bailey wanted tough conditions last week so he'd be able to capitalize on his experience, but he had to adjust to the warm and stable weather. He put in 10 days of practice prior to many of the other competitors getting on the water.
"I typically pray for it to be a cold-water tournament," he said. "It gets extremely tough and I feel like I have a better chance to win if it's brutal. When it gets warmer, it's easier for the average guy to go catch fish."
He made his decision to eliminate smallmouth about 5 days before competition began.
"I saw it coming so I abandoned the smallies and knew the largemouth would start moving around and start staging on deeper stuff," he said.
The "deeper stuff" was brush piles in 18 to 22 feet of water scattered around the northern end of the lake.
"Brush at the mouths of coves at the north end and deeper ones that aren't as obvious," he noted. "I avoided the obvious ones."
At Havasu, brush piles are typically installed by Arizona Game and Fish officials so when he's on the water guiding, Bailey is always on the lookout for the "giant boat equipped with hydraulic lifts." He said it's common for him to briefly interrupt a guide trip to mark waypoints of the fresh brush.
"I'm not sure they fish too much, but just by chance they put them in good areas," he said. "They put so many in that eventually they'll put a couple in a good spot. You have to know the areas with better quality because if you put brush in there, it'll attract better fish."
Bailey said the brush piles are mostly identical in composition - a bundle of limbs up to 6 feet in length and 3 to 4 feet in diameter.

Bailey relied on a milk run of six spots each day, but changed his rotation through the tournament.
"I'm always fairly confident here and have a good feel for the lake each week," he said. "Not practicing helped me in a way because I might've gone out and caught a few more fish than I needed to. Leaving it alone and fishing my instincts and confidence spots was good for me."
His opening cast on day 1 with a deep-diving crankbait resulted in a keeper, prompting him to mutter to himself, "That's not good."
It was 11:45 a.m. when he got his second bite and that was followed quickly by a third keeper. He made a move to another brush pile and hooked another fish, but it broke him off in the brush. He thinks it was at least a 6-pounder.
"That spun me out," he said. "Any fish like that is a deal-breaker."
He used a small, shallow-running crankbait and a lighter Carolina rig to fool a few other fish and finish his limit, which put him in 5th place after day 1 with 16-14.
On day 2, he started on the spot where he'd lost the big one the previous day. His luck didn't improve as he lost the first five fish that bit.
"In the first hour, I blew a big bag," he said. "That's not how I wanted to start."
By 12:30, he was stuck with a lone 1-pounder in his livewell. It was make-or-break time.
"I had a special area that I didn't want to go to and was trying to save for day 3, but I ended up going there and my co-angler and I each caught 17 pounds there in 2 1/2 hours," he said.
It was a cove with brush piles, but it also had a good number of mesquite trees, which tend to hold fish this time of year.
"It's just a spot that holds a bunch of big largemouth this time of year," he said. "There were 10 to 15 fish suspended in each tree on top of the fish hunkered down in the brush. It's not every year it gets like that, but this year it was loaded.
"I'd kept it in the back of my mind and figured it was a place I could win at if I could leave it alone."
His 17-01 bag moved him into 2nd, 10 ounces behind Chris Kinley.
Bailey said he and his co-angler caught 16 fish out of the trees and brush Friday afternoon, but with dozens more swimming around, he figured he could fall back on it again if needed on the final day.
"I wanted to start there Saturday morning, but I had another spot that has saved my tail and I knew with 10 boats nobody would be there and I had the urge to go there and start for 10 or 15 minutes," he said.
He caught three keepers on a deep-running plug to ease his mind. He picked off a 3-pounder where he'd lost the big one on day 1 and finished his limit with a 4-pounder off another brush pile. By 11 a.m., he had roughly 15 pounds and spent the balance of the day probing the brush and trees that had bailed him out Friday.
"I never got a bite," he said. "I went there at the same time of day as Friday. The only difference was we had clouds and a little wind, but I didn't think it wouldn't affect those deeper fish. They just didn't want to bite. I could still see them.
"I'm real happy that I fished elsewhere for 4 hours because if I had started there, I might not have caught anything."
Winning Pattern Notes
> Bailey said the center of the lake is dotted with mesquite trees, but only a few coves have the bigger ones that topped out 20 feet off the bottom.
> When fishing brush, Bailey tried to be as thorough as possible. "I tried to hit it from several angles," he said. "It's so long and round that they could get on either end or the sides. That's why I only fished six spots. I worked them from all different angles."
> With the Carolina rig, he dead-sticked it frequently and that seemed to trigger some bites. "Once I made contact with the brush, I'd leave it 20 seconds or a minute with no movement and then I'd get bit," he said. "You had to leave it in their face. That took patience and confidence because guys are notorious for working it in there and then moving on. On any pressured water, I know it increases your bites if you have the guts to do it."

> Main factor in his success - "Having confidence in my areas and knowing that the spots I was fishing had fish and getting them to bite. Guys come here and don't know there is a group of fish on these piles. I know where they live. You just have to get them to bite."
