Lake St. Clair and the surrounding water left more than a few anglers scratching their heads out of frustration Thursday. Today, the same venue had them rubbing their eyes in amazement.

Thirty anglers caught 20 or more pounds Friday – more than a quarter of the 108-man field – and another 24 had between 18 and 20 on what could go down as the best day of smallmouth fishing the Elite Series has ever seen. That means exactly half the field caught at least 18 pounds today.

Just last month, Elite Series competitors couldn’t stop raving about the St. Lawrence River after it produced 20 stringers in excess of 20 pounds and another 15 weighing at least 19 pounds on day 1. Today’s results were astounding by comparison, but not totally unexpected, and with more sun and calm winds in the forecast for Saturday, the 50 remaining anglers could have another field day at St. Clair, which is overshadowing Lake Huron and Lake Erie by a wide margin this week.

Brock Mosley is proving this week his runner-up finish at the St. Lawrence was no fluke. The second-year pro from Mississippi caught a tournament-best (so far) 25-08 and took over the lead at the halfway point with 45-13. It’s the biggest stringer he’s ever caught in a tournament and now the challenge becomes maintaining the blistering (90-pound!) pace he’s set.

“They bit today and I think they’re going to bite tomorrow,” said Mosley, who is now up to 45th in points after today. “It’s not fast and furious by any means. These smallmouth are very sensitive.”

Matt Lee stayed on track to make his fourth top-12 cut of the season with a 23-03 stringer that bumped him up one spot to 2nd with a 45-00 total. Day-1 leader Bradley Roy gave up two positions, but his 21-09 effort has him just 1-01 behind Mosley with 44-12.

Luke Clausen sacked 24-15 and shot up 21 places to 4th with 44-04 overall. Jordan Lee has the same total in 5th (Clausen’s bigger weight today breaks the tie) after catching 24-11.

Here's a look at the top 12 after two days of competition, with their deficit margin from Mosley indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Brock Mosley: 45-13
2. Matt Lee: 45-00 (0-13)
3. Bradley Roy: 44-12 (1-01)
4. Luke Clausen: 44-04 (1-09)
5. Jordan Lee: 44-04 (1-09)
6. Jason Christie: 42-13 (3-00)
7. Aaron Martens: 42-07 (3-06)
8. Steve Kennedy: 42-05 (3-08)
9. Jamie Hartman: 42-04 (3-09)
10. Takahiro Omori: 42-02 (3-11)
11. Mark Daniels, Jr.: 42-00 (3-13)
12. Brett Preuett: 41-13 (4-00)

It’s not often a 20-pound average after two days of an Elite Series tournament is only good enough for 20th place, but that’s where Brandon Palaniuk finds himself – and he probably couldn’t be happier. After ceding the Angler of the Year points lead to Jacob Wheeler following Thursday’s round, Palaniuk bounced back with a 22-06 bag to retake the top spot in the AOY chase.

Wheeler, meanwhile, made a long run to Lake Erie and caught 19-10, but fell nine spots to 16th on the leaderboard with 41-03. He’s now 3rd in points with Jason Christie taking over 2nd after a second straight 21-pound bag kept him in the top 6.

There is still considerable hand-wringing further down the points standings as the final berths in next month’s AOY Championship will be settled this weekend. At this point, Skeet Reese, Mosley and Mike Iaconelli have worked their way inside the top 50 while Fletcher Shryock, Matt Herren and Randall Tharp fell out by missing the cut this week.

The final man to qualify to compete on Saturday did so with the heaviest of hearts today as Fred Roumbanis received word last night that his father, Kelly Roumbanis, passed away Thursday night in California after a battle with cancer. He mustered 16-07 today and has 35-03 in 50th, edging Ish Monroe by 4 ounces for the last cut position.

As impressive as the weights were today and have been so far, this is by no means a catch-fest. The word "random" has been used frequently when describing areas that have produced repeatedly and while the leaders aren’t piling up the numbers as far as fish caught, the average quality is remarkable. The average fish through two days has weighed 3.56 pounds.

“It feels like you’re scratching off a lottery ticket every time you pull up on a place,” Clausen said. “You’re like, ‘Well, I hope they’re here now.’ It seems a good cast here is one that lands in the water.”

High skies, bright sun and a slight northeast breeze – much like today’s weather – will highlight Saturday’s competition as the sun seems to be a trigger for the bigger smallmouth to feed. Reaction baits reeled around and over patches of grass on St. Clair have been effective search tools so far while tubes and dropshots have accounted for a good portion of catches as well.

Mosley Mixed Lake, River

> Day 2: 5, 25-08 (10, 45-13)

Mosley admits it’s taken him some time to get acclimated to the Elite Series lifestyle and gain confidence that he can be competitive each time out. He’s shown over the past month (2nd at St. Lawrence, 42nd at Lake Champlain) that he’s starting to get settled in.

“Everything I’ve ever done, whether it’s baseball in high school or college or fishing, each time I move up a level, it takes me a while to get comfortable,” he said Friday while absorbing the fact he’d caught the biggest stringer of his tournament career. “I just think I’m finally comfortable. I’m tuning things out better. I’m not getting stressed. I’ve just been getting adjusted to the whole Elite Series deal and it’s taken a year and a half to. It’s such a momentum sport.”

And he has it in spades entering the weekend. He felt like he could follow up Thursday’s 20-05 with 22 or 23 pounds max, but he didn’t see 25 pounds coming.

“Nobody expects to catch 25 pounds of smallmouth,” he said.

He caught a 5-pounder within the first 15 minutes and added a 4-pounder and two 3s before leaving his first spot around 10:30. He moved into the Detroit River, where he had located some smaller fish in practice. Today, they were bigger.

“I caught a 4 1/2, a 3 1/2 and a 4 all within 30 minutes of each other,” he said.

Matt Lee has caught 20-plus pounds off two different spots so far.

He headed back to his first spot in St. Clair and within 10 minutes, he caught a 5-12 that anchored his bag. At that point, his smallest fish was about 4 pounds, but as he expanded a bit around the area, he caught another 5 at 2:30 to cap off the day. Not wanting to risk anything, he headed to the ramp and checked in early.

“It was just one of those days where everything goes right,” he added.

He’s not sure if he’ll follow the same sequence tomorrow – a lot will depend on how productive the lake is first thing in the morning.

“The river fish are pretty easy to catch, but the quality isn’t the same as what’s in the lake,” he said. “I think 17 to 18 is doable in the river. I’m starting on the lake and hope to catch a couple good ones. The early bites will determine how long I stay. If I catch 20 early tomorrow, I’ll stay on the lake all day.”

2nd: Different Spot Produced For Lee

> Day 2: 5, 23-03 (10, 45-00)

Lee did most of his damage today on spots he didn’t fish Thursday, but he’s boiled things down pretty simply as he chases yet another final-day berth.

“When you go where you get bites and soak your bait, you’re going to get a bite,” he said. “It’s a barren sea out there. They can bite anything.

“The deal for me in practice that makes it so tough is that there’s a bit of algae bloom going on, so finding new places is hard,” he added. “But if you caught a 4 and a 2 in practice in the same 200-yard stretch, it’s safe to assume there are a lot of fish in those places.”

He tallied 12 keepers by the end of the day, but the earliest stretch of the morning was his most productive – he had 20 pounds by 8:30, then went 90 minutes without a bite on the same spot.

“Confidence is huge for me,” he said. “I already had it, but I get frustrated by not performing. It’s a never-ending cycle. I’m mad I’m not leading the tournament and mad I’m not higher in AOY by being in 2nd.

“If I go out tomorrow and catch 12 pounds and finish 40th, nobody remembers you. I can’t come in with 15 pounds. It’s tough, but it’s been good. I just want to go to Mille Lacs and only need to catch a fish to make the Classic.”

3rd: Roy Unfazed By Losing Lead

> Day 2: 5, 21-09 (10, 44-12)

Roy wasn’t bothered by the fact he fell out of the lead. He’s treating this tournament more like a marathon and knows it’s possible to be back on top heading into Sunday.

“I think being consistent is going to be key,” he said. “I’m just focused on that and staying in that 22-pound range. If I do that, I’ll be right there when it’s all said and done.”

He recycled his best spot from day 1 this morning and got off to a good start again. Eventually, the bites tapered off and he made a move.

“I went to stuff I hadn’t hit yet and I think I expanded pretty well on it,” he said, adding that he caught four more good ones at this second spot.

He felt like the calmer winds and additional sun are key to triggering the bigger smallmouth to feed.

“If it slicks off, I’m worried it might die off and it if blows, it might be hard to stay on them,” he said. “It’s such a delicate balance here.”

4th: Clausen Riding Randomness Pattern

> Day 2: 5, 24-15 (10, 44-04)

Clausen can’t recall in his 10-plus years of fishing professionally a day on which so many anglers eclipsed the 20-pound mark.

“It seems like every tournament we go to, it’s the best cut weight ever,” he said. “Everywhere we go it’s getting better and better, but I don’t remember a tournament anywhere seeing that.”

He figured with 44 pounds after two days, he’d be leading or, at worst, in second. The bites have been mostly random for the former Cup and Classic winner, but his confidence is starting to grow and he’s beginning to follow his instincts more, and that’s when the Washington native is at his best.

“It’s more about me,” he said. “I’m still not making great decisions and I made some poor decisions today. It showed with the 10 pounds I had at 11 a.m. I ran the wrong kind of stuff and stuff other people were talking about.”

He got it all squared away and was able to match his output from Monday in practice when conditions were very similar.

“Today wasn’t that surprising with the sun being out,” he said. “I got some random bites, but the big ones were biting.

“Those same places where the sun was out, I caught nothing there Thursday or I caught more smaller ones. The big ones just seem to show up – I don’t know where they come from, but they’re just biting. It’s so random here.”

He’s committed to the Canadian side of St. Clair and has no plans to flee.

“I don’t know why anyone would leave St. Clair to go to Erie or Huron at this point,” he added. “I ran about six places today and I’ll probably go to different ones tomorrow. It’s just so hard to know when I‘ll get a bite.”

Luke Clausen has lost nearly as many good fish as he's caught so far.

5th: Quality’s Been Consistent for J. Lee

> Day 2: 5, 24-11 (10, 44-04)

Jordan Lee remembers his first impression of Lake St. Clair coming in a Bassmaster Northern Open in 2014 when he finished 102nd.

“I was thinking too much and looking for something different,” he said. “What I took from that is you need to go fishing and keep your bait wet and eventually you’ll get around some fish.”

It’s a simplistic assessment, but it’s been proven true over and over again this week. He’s not getting as many bites as he recalled getting during the 2015 Elite Series event, but the quality he’s catching is a nice tradeoff.

“I’m super stoked about it,” he said. “I didn’t see it coming. Practice was kind of tough. I was not getting a lot of bites. You think it’s tougher because places where you’d drift around and catch 10 to 12 fish you don’t catch any now. The size is the key this time. They’ve gotten bigger. It’s going through a good cycle.”

He’s relied mostly on a dropshot, but isn’t using his electronics all that much because it’s hard to discern where the fish are in vast spreads of 12-inch high grass.

“For whatever reason, I just got some big bites,” he added. “There’s no pattern here. On St. Clair, you don’t have to know much. It’s probably the best lake in the country to not have a clue on and catch a huge sack of fish. There’s no rhyme or reason. You get in an area where you had some bites and hope to get more.

“The good thing is there were several guys around me today and they all had pretty big weights. That’s the way to know there are more fish around. That gives me confidence that I can keep it up.”

12th: Preuett Eyeing First Top 12

> Day 1: 5, 21-09 (10, 41-13)

Brett Preuett clinched his second paycheck of the season with 21-09 today and is in the hunt for his best Elite Series finish and possibly his first top-12 cut.

“It feels great,” he said. “I had a tough season and a lot of bad breaks so it feels good to catch 20 and make the weekend. I want to do it again and make the top 12.”

He has maximized his fishing time each day by staying in St. Clair and targeting a few areas roughly the size of a football field. The difference today was the morning bite was much better than it was on Thursday, but the afternoon bite fizzled.

“I got dialed in on a sweet spot and caught them right off the bat this morning,” he said. “I was trying to cull the rest of the day.”

He’s relied on a crankbait and swimbait and has simply gone back through areas where he got a bite in practice.

“For me, it was more about finding the depth to get bit in,” he said. “If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be and I’ll catch a big bag.”

91st: Lane Bounced Back

> Day 2: 5, 18-12 (10, 28-00)

Russ Lane went back through the same area today that he combed with a crankbait on Thursday and had considerably more success. The troubling thing is he can’t make any sense of why the fish bit today versus day 1.

“When it gets cloudy, I don’t know what they do,” Lane said after a season-worst 91st-place finish. “I talked to (Kevin) VanDam about it and he said ‘Keep cranking,’ so that’s what I did. He didn’t catch them as good as he wanted to (Thursday) and I darn sure didn’t.”

Lane figures he tallied 30 bites today in the same area he caught six smallmouth Thursday.

“I didn’t know if they’d swam off because they have a reputation for roaming around,” he said. “I just didn’t figure out how to catch more of them.”

The only notable difference he could identify is that he cranked with 10-pound line Thursday and his bait was hitting the bottom quite a bit. Today, he switched to 14-pound line, causing the crankbait to run higher in the water column.

“I think my bait was running too deep,” he added.

> Day 2 stats – 108 anglers, 95 limits (two fewer than yesterday), 5 fours, 2 threes, 2 twos, 1 one, 3 zeroes (three more than yesterday).

> Rick Clunn was one of three anglers to record a zero today. He relayed via text message that he “had the right fish, just not enough of them,” noting he had two 4-pounders and a 3-pounder. “No reason to take them to the scales. Released them where they lived.”
