VanDam Still On Top; Lot Of Shuffling Behind Him

After setting a blistering pace on day 1 of the St. Lawrence River Elite Series with 50 stringers over 18 pounds, 20 of which cracked the 20-pound mark, it was hard to fathom the 109-man field being able match such incredible numbers today.

They sure tried, though. The massive river that ultimately connects the Great Lakes system to the Atlantic Ocean produced 13 more bags in excess of 20 pounds and another 24 over 18 as the smallmouth fishery that forms the border between northern New York and Canada continues to churn out 3- and 4-pounders in excess quantities.

Kevin VanDam held onto the lead with a 19-08 stringer that put him at 43-13 overall, but he has his work cut out for him as he eyes his eighth career full-field Elite Series win and 24th B.A.S.S. victory overall. On his heels are new Angler of the Year points leader Casey Ashley and nephew Jonathon VanDam, both of whom caught 20-plus pounds for the second straight day.

Ashley sacked 20-14 and jumped three spots to 2nd with 42-12 while JVD improved 11 positions with a 21-15 effort to slide into 3rd with 42-08.

Brandon Coulter moved up 20 spots with a 22-08 stringer that put him in 4th with 42-02 and Brock Mosley had 21-08 and went from 16th to 5th, where he has 42-02. The top 9 are separated by less than 3 pounds.

The top-51 cut line fell at 34-13, which was 11 ounces greater than the day-2 cut in 2013 and more than 4 pounds better than it was two years ago.

Brandon Palaniuk, who won at Waddington in 2013, caught a tournament-best 25-00 today and jumped 63 places to 9th. In doing so, he leapt back into contention for AOY – he’s now 2nd behind Ashley. Timmy Horton made a 52-spot improvement and made the cut in 42nd after catching 21-10 today. Brandon Lester and Drew Benton also earned a spot among the top 51 with big moves today. Lester went from 74th to 28th and Benton 87th to 43rd.

Bill Lowen, who was 2nd after Thursday, slipped to 13th after catching 16-03 today. Seth Feider dropped from 3rd to 18th and Marty Robinson sunk from 5th to 26th. Randall Tharp and Mike Iaconelli both caught 20-plus pounds on day 1, but both missed the cut by less than a pound.

While the numbers overall are impressive, the activity around the river is far from non-stop. Several competitors have been fortunate to hit productive flurries early on that have allowed them to ease off their best areas by mid-morning. Others have had to rotate shallow and deep areas throughout the day and grind out a limit and whatever upgrades they can catch.

The wind blew out of the southwest today, which gave the current a bit of a boost. That repositioned some of the fish and forced some to adjust their drifts with a dropshot or tube.

The wind will be negligible Saturday with partly cloudy skies and air temps in the upper 70s.

VanDam Battled Wind

> Day 2: 5, 19-08 (10, 43-13)

VanDam said Friday’s wind posed a challenge to being able to make effective bait presentations, especially with finesse tactics like a dropshot.
 
“When the wind is blowing the same direction as the current, it really speeds it up – and this afternoon it was really blowing,” he said in a B.A.S.S. news release. “That makes it a lot harder to get a good drift, to get that weight moving with your bait so it’s really natural to the fish.
 
“When it’s calm and the current is slow, it’s a lot easier to get them to bite.”
 
He had a slow morning, but picked off solid fish throughout the balance of the day.

“I struggled to catch them today,” he added. “I don’t know what I can do. I’m around the right fish.”

2nd: Ashley Has Done Damage Early

> Day 2: 5, 20-14 (10, 42-12)

In 2015, Ashley targeted largemouth and wound up finishing 29th at the St. Lawrence. This week, with smallmouth scattered between deeper and shallow water, he’s leaving the largemouth alone.

“In years past, the fish have been pretty deep and I’m not good at that,” he said. “Right now, they’re deep and shallow so the smallmouth are more in the wheelhouse for me.”

Now he finds himself sandwiched between smallmouth mavens named VanDam entering the weekend.

“I’ll take it every time,” he said.

He’s been able to build a good foundation each day off one particular spot he’s had to himself. He caught a limit there Thursday and left. Today, he sacked 18 pounds and caught his upgrades elsewhere. He’s yet to go back to it later in the day.

“There are a lot of good fish there – 3s and 4s, but no big ones,” he said. “I’ve been done with it by 8:30 each morning and it’s an hour ride to get there.”

If it’s good to him again tomorrow, he said he’ll probably leave with the hope to fish it hard on Sunday

“I have other places with good ones, but there’s been a lot of pressure on those spots,” he added. “The field got cut in half so we’ll see. If I can’t cull, I might go back and see what happens.”

He’s relied on standard smallmouth tactics (dropshot, tube, swimbait, jerkbait) so far and sees no reason to change the rest of the way.

“I’m not reinventing the wheel. I just found a good spot,” he said.

3rd: JVD Grinding It Out

Jonathon VanDam entered this event 74th in AOY points so he knew he couldn’t afford any more missed cuts if he wants to make the AOY Championship in September at Mille Lacs Lake. He’s made a sizable jump in points over the first two days, but needs to keep it going to make it stick.

“So far, so good,” he said. “It could get better, but I can’t seem to get some of those great big ones to bite.”

It’s been a hunt-and-peck approach so far as he’s trying to capitalize on big fish that are still shallow while mixing in deeper spots in the afternoon.

“I have five or six spots where if you pull up at the right time, it can be good,” he said. “I’m trying to catch one or two here or there and hope eventually I’ll run into a pile of them.”

When the sun has been out, he’s focusing shallow because the smallmouth tend to feed actively under those conditions. When it’s been cloudy, he’ll slide out deeper and fish a dropshot. He’s also mixed in a hair jig. He caught roughly the same number of fish as he did Thursday, but spent more time today chasing a couple bigger fish.

He has yet to sample any of the spawners he located on Monday when conditions were slick calm and he knows there’s a chance they’ve moved on since then.

“Those big ones move in and out pretty quick,” he said.

4th: Coulter’s Confidence Growing

Like some of his other Southern comrades, Coulter has a comfort level fishing up North and everything has started to fall into place over the past couple days, a refreshing change after a maddening practice session.

“It’s been going good so far,” he said. “Who knows what tomorrow holds. I want to get back out there.”

He’s yet to catch fish off the same spot more than once. He continues to hunt new water and trust that he’ll make the right drift over the right fish at the right time.

“I’m moving and running into them each day,” he said. I have confidence in what I’m doing and in the area I’m in.”

But it hasn’t been without a little bit of stress. At 12:30 on Thursday, he had roughly 13 pounds, but wound up with 19-10. Today, he had about 14 pounds at 11 a.m. and was starting to think he was squandering a chance to cash a check.

“I told myself it was too early to freak out,” he said. “By 11:30, I had 22 1/2 pounds. I just have confidence I’ll eventually run into them, that if I keep running my stuff they’ll be on one of those places.”

He spent the afternoon drifting new areas and caught fish everywhere he went, but nothing helped him. He’s been effective in the 12- to 30-foot zone, but the key has been staying precise with boat positioning.

“You need to be good with your drifts because I don’t think they’re swimming that far to get the bait,” he said.

5th: Mosley In His (New) Comfort Zone

A couple weeks ago, Mosley finished 14th in the Oneida Lake Northern Open. Two years ago, at the same time the Elite Series was at the St. Lawrence River, he was busy finishing 5th at the Lake Champlain Northern FLW Series.

For some reason, he says, fishing for smallmouth just clicks with him and he’d love if it would keep clicking this way for a couple more days.

“I feel at home,” said Mosley, who hails from Collinsville, Miss.

He’d initially planned to fish for largemouth this week, but after going the first half-day of practice without catching one over 2 1/2 pounds, he shifted his sights toward smallmouth.

He quickly discovered a pattern that had worked for him at Oneida and he’s been riding it ever since. He declined to disclose the presentation that’s been most effective for him.

“I’m just running a pattern and I’ve caught fish up and down the river doing it,” he added.

He’s caught fish from 4 feet out to 25. Today, he finished his first limit with a 4 1/2-pounder.

“That’s when I knew I had 16, which was probably enough to get a check,” he said. “My next three were all over 4 pounds and I was done by 10 a.m. I thought I needed one more 4 1/2 to really get in the hunt.”

As it stands, he’s less than two pounds out of the lead as he seeks his first Elite Series win.

“I feel confident I can catch another 20 tomorrow,” he added. “I’ll worry about Sunday when I get there.”

8th: Schultz Feels At Home

There’s something about the water in upstate New York that jives with Bernie Schultz. Whether it’s Oneida Lake, where he has four top-12 finishes in Elite Series events, or the St. Lawrence, where he’s working on a third top-15 finish, he understands how to formulate an effective gameplan.

“I fell in love with this place back in the 1980s,” he said “It just played to my skillset. I like the versatility aspect. You have to mix it up. There are days when one lure is the only way, but on other days you have to change it up and I really like that. It keeps you on your toes and makes it challenging. I’m not a guy who can drag a tube or dropshot around for 8 hours.”

Today, he continued to work between a couple areas where the water is less than 10 feet deep.

“It’s slow,” he said. “There’s not a lot of fish and they’re not easy to catch.”

He tallied a dozen keepers today, but the key has been sensing when one of the areas needs a rest.

“When things feel exhausted, then I’ll get off it and go try another area,” he said. “There are definitely slow periods. I got a lot of bites early, then it slows down. My afternoons have not been very productive.”

67th: Quality Dried Up On Crews

After catching 19-07 on day 1 and considering how well many of his competitors did, John Crews figured another stringer in the mid-teens was feasible. Catching bass wasn’t the issue today. Catching the quality ones similar to what he had Thursday proved to be his undoing.

“I caught a pile of fish, but I had one decent bite – a 3-plus pounder,” a frustrated Crews said. “I must’ve caught 25 or more. I fished shallow and deep, but no quality. It’s inexplicable. I figured I could go catch 15 or 16 pounds no problem and I just whiffed.”

It’s his third straight missed cut and will drop him out of the top 30 in AOY points.

“You have to fish hard to not catch a good one here,” he added. “It’s mind-boggling that I caught all those little ones. You have to put two good days together to make a top 50 on the Elites and you can’t stink one of those days.”

He fished a Missile Baits Shockwave swimbait in shallow scenarios and when fishing in current, he threw the Missile Baits Fuse on a dropshot.

> Robbie Latuso was assessed a two-pound penalty today for making a cast with six fish in his livewell, but he overcame it and made the cut in 45th with 35-03. He was credited with 16-14 today. Andy Montgomery was assessed the same penalty on Thursday, but he wound up finishing 94th.
