For the past year and a half, Carl Svebek III has been a resident of Orange, Texas, which always serves as the host city for high-level tournaments on the Sabine River. He may have been a local from the perspective of where his home sits for last week's Bassmaster Central Open, but he hasn't had time to become one from a fishing standpoint.

"I probably worked as hard for this tournament as I've ever worked for one before," said the former tour pro who was out of the sport for the better part of a decade prior to returning last year. "I've been out (on the river) quite a few times in the past 18 months, but I didn't have a bunch of places I could go hit.

"I had to find my fish for this tournament."

He found a bunch of them in a secluded marsh just across the Louisiana border. He caught as many as a hundred in a day en route to compiling a 12-pound average, which is a stout number for the Sabine.

His 36-12 total over 3 days outdistanced Swamp People star and 2-day leader T-Roy Broussard of nearby Port Arthur, Texas by 11 ounces. The win earned Svebek his initial Bassmaster Classic berth (contingent upon him competing in the final Central Open of the year at Oklahoma's Grand Lake in October).

"I'll be on cloud 9 for the next 9 months until that Classic comes around," he said.

Following are some of the details of his triumph.

Practice

Svebek discovered the marsh that would carry him to victory about 2 weeks before the event got under way. It was one of several he'd pinpointed by perusing Google Earth for backwaters that were a good distance off the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway.

When he and 14-year-old son Christopher laid eyes on it in person, he liked what he saw.

"That one lake was just beautiful, with lily pads and all kinds of (vegetation)," he said. "We ate lunch and then fished for about 15 minutes and we each caught one about 3 pounds, and we also caught three other smaller fish.

"I hadn't caught anything over 3 since I'd been down here. That size fish was a monster in my opinion."

There was one big problem, though – he'd been forced to use his trolling motor for several miles to reach the place and had gone through two sets of batteries. The water was only a foot and a half deep the entire way.

He eventually found a stretch that had about 2 1/4 feet of water, and he could run his boat on plane for the 4 or 5 miles between the marsh and a major canal that led back to the Intracoastal.

"It was kind of scary," he said. "I had to run between a lot of reeds with the motor trimmed up and I knew if something happened, I'd be stuck out there."

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 11-11
> Day 2: 5, 12-14
> Day 3: 5, 12-03
> Total = 15, 36-12

Svebek's marsh, which he estimated to be three-quarters of a mile long and perhaps 150 yards wide, was teeming with fish.

"The nature of this fishery is so unlike a lot of the lakes we go to, where the fish go out to a ledge in 12 to 14 feet of water when it gets warm" he said. "The water temperature in there was 90 degrees and they didn't have anywhere to go to really get deep.

"I think their comfort zone is the grass and structure. They had hydrilla milfoil, marsh grass, lily pads – it was a pretty good environment for them in there."

He didn't have it entirely to himself, however. After amassing his weight early on day 1, he departed to explore some water near the main canal and encountered eventual 5th-place finisher Shane Cormier about halfway along the route. After he'd passed, he heard Cormier's big motor come to life and his boat take off in the direction that Svebek had just come from.

They both fished there over the final 2 days without any encroachment issues.

"I have the utmost respect for that guy and I let him know it," Svebek said. "He stayed in one area of that lake and I knew he was doing it for me – he knew I'd started there the first day.

"I respected his water and even when he left, I didn't fish where he was. I wanted to pay him back as well as I could."

During the morning hours, the fish in the marsh did a lot of roaming and Svebek caught them on a Zoom Super Fluke. At noon, with the sun straight overhead, he'd switch to a frog.

He caught literally dozens of fish on the Fluke. Bites on the frog were fewer and far between, but they were usually of high quality – one was a 4-pounder on the final day that provided his winning margin.

He didn't know whether he had enough weight to win once it was time to head for the ramp on day 3. When Broussard, the leader after days 1 and 2, had weighed in and come up short of Svebek's total, the latter was able to fulfill a vow he'd made to his late father more than four decades previously.

"I was full of emotion for several reasons – it was the day before Father's day and it was my daughter's birthday," he said. "You know how you remember some things from when you were really young and you don't know why you remember them? Well, I remembered being with my dad on Toledo Bend when I was 8 years old and telling him that someday I was going to fish in the Bassmaster Classic.

"Now, that's going to happen. It's still hard for me to believe."

Winning Gear Notes

> Fluke gear: 6'9" medium-heavy Bass Pro Shops CarbonLite rod, Bass Pro Shops Johnny Morris Signature Series reel (7:1 ratio), 17-pound Bass Pro Shops XPS fluorocarbon line, 4/0 Bass Pro Shops XPS EWG hook, Zoom Super Fluke (bluegill).

> He attached a barrel swivel about a foot up his line from the hook. "That allowed me to make long casts without any twist in the line," he said. "The other thing I found was it added just a little bit of weight, and when the bait would hit the water it would fall kind of like a wacky-worm. I caught two 4-pounders on back-to-back casts on the second day and both bites came on the initial fall before I started working it."

> Frog gear: 7' heavy-action Bass Pro Shops CarbonLite rod, same reel, 65-pound PowerPro braided line, Bass Pro Shops Kermy Frog (orca).

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – "I think a lot of it had to do with the support factor I had. Gopher Industrial is my title sponsor and was the sponsor of the tournament, and everybody there's just been incredible. I also had some of my family there and so many local people rooting for me. They treated me like a rock star and that's how I felt."

> Performance edge – "With what I went through to get where I was fishing, I'd never want to try in anything but a Ranger/Evinrude. I knew if I stalled out anywhere going in or coming out, I was done, but I was able to cut through that grass and I never had to worry about anything."
