Brent Ehrler figured there would be several competitors who had so-so weights on day 1 bounce back with big stringers today. Likewise, he expected some guys who had a strong showing on Wednesday to retreat a little on the leaderboard.

He was right on both fronts and luckily he didn't fall into either category. He was also correct in his timing again around the shallow grass areas that produced 22-05 for him and helped the
southern California native maintain a slim lead after two days of the Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest at Sam Rayburn Reservoir.

Ehrler is one of five anglers with two 20-pound stringers to their credit so far and his 47-11 total has him two ounces ahead of Brandon Palaniuk, who remained in 2nd after logging 23-02.

Jacob Wheeler caught a stout 23-07 and moved up seven spots to 3rd with 44-14, while Randy Howell slid one spot to 4th after catching 19-13 that has him at 43-12.

Greg Vinson caught the day’s biggest bass, an 8-05 brute that anchored his 21-15 stringer and jumped him up to 5th with 43-01.

"CatchFest" may be a more appropriate name for this week’s tournament as all 109 competitors recorded a limit today and just 12 of them were smaller than 12 1/2 pounds, but none were lighter than 10-03. Fourteen stringers of 20-plus pounds were registered today and 35 bass in excess of 21 inches were caught and shown off at weigh-in.

The average size of the fish weighed in on day 2 was 3.27 pounds, a tenth of a pound bigger than the day-1 average. There may not be a more prolific largemouth fishery in the country right now than Rayburn.

Here's a look at the top 12 after day 2, with deficit margin from Ehrler indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Brent Ehrler: 47-11
2. Brandon Palaniuk: 47-09 (0-02)
3. Jacob Wheeler: 44-14 (2-13)
4. Randy Howell: 43-12 (3-15)
5. Greg Vinson: 43-01 (4-10)
6. Jason Williamson: 42-08 (5-03)
7. Hank Cherry: 42-03 (5-08)
8. Cliff Crochet: 41-15 (5-12)
9. Josh Bertrand: 40-10 (7-01)
10. Russ Lane: 40-08 (7-03)
11. Alton Jones Jr.: 40-01 (7-10)
12. Kelley Jaye: 40-01 (7-10)

Even with all the fish being caught, there was plenty of movement on the leaderboard. Alton Jones Jr. made an incredible 71-spot improvement today to 11th behind a tournament-best 26-10 stringer. Bobby Lane also gained 71 places up to 22nd after he more than doubled his day-1 weight with 24-09 today.

Jacob Powroznik rose 43 places to 45th with a 20-02 bag today and Drew Benton improved 34 spots with a 19-12 stringer to make the cut in 41st.

John Crews made up 43 spots with a 20-05 effort, but finished 53rd, three ounces shy of the cut.

While many competitors predicted prior to the event that the winning fish would likely be caught offshore, it’s worth noting how many fish have been caught out of Rayburn’s shallow grass. Whether it’s hydrilla or haygrass or pads, there’s a healthy population of fish still roaming around the skinny water.

Some are mixing shallow patterns with deeper water depending on the time of day. Conditions during practice were pretty stable and sunny, but the first two days of competition have been windy and overcast with scattered periods of sun and that has forced some to adjust their strategies. Topwaters have been productive, as have reaction baits, but it remains to be seen how big of a player the deep bite will be with two days of competition remaining.

The top 51 will head back out on the water tomorrow before the field is reduced to 12. The tournament will conclude Sunday with the winner being determined by the highest cumulative weight.

Timing Right Again For Ehrler

> Day 2: 5, 22-05 (10, 47-11)

Ehrler didn’t collide with a 9-pounder today, but he made up for it with a pile of 3- to 5-pounders that helped him maintain the lead at the midway point. Still, his confidence level has some room for improvement.

“I feel about the same as yesterday,” he said. “I have a couple areas where I think I can catch a couple big ones, but it’s so tough to get that big bite. I caught a lot of fish today – a ton – but it was 12-pound limit stuff. That’s what I thought it’d be. You can catch ‘em, but it’s just a timing thing for when that big one bites. If you time it right, great. If not, you’ll have 12 pounds.”

The five-time FLW Tour winner said this event is starting to play out similar to an event he won at Lake Ouachita in May 2010. They’re vastly different fisheries, but he’s getting the same vibe this week.

“The fish are changing, which is a little weird,” he said. “I saw some schools in practice, but haven’t had any of them show up. That’s how it was at Ouachita. You go along and then connect with them. It’s like they’re running in packs. It still has that feel to it. The water looks similar minus the grass, but the fish are set up in similar areas and the fish are shallow and deep. It’s the same time of year. They’re post-spawn and on bream beds and they’re on brush and shallow bushes.”

His biggest fish of the day was a 5-05 and the smallest among his limit was a 3-10. He spent most of his day around shallow grass with a jerkbait, but the key moving forward will continue to be timing.

“They definitely seem to bite at a couple different times,” he said. “You go through a flurry and then a lull, then catch a few. They definitely bite in flurries.”

His best flurry came this morning, when he caught a couple 5-pounders in a 10-minute span.

“I went from 4 pounds to about 17,” he said.

Brandon Palaniuk has had success fishing shallow and offshore so far.

2nd: ‘Relaxed’ Palaniuk Has Deep, Shallow Options

> Day 2: 5, 23-02 (10, 47-09)

Palaniuk cannot recall another tournament during which he’s felt so relaxed. Maybe it’s the fact that Rayburn is slap-full of 2- to 3-pounders that catching fish isn’t much of a worry. Maybe it’s because he’s starting to get clued in to effective shallow- and deep-water patterns after being all over the board during practice. Either way, a relaxed Palaniuk could be a dangerous Palaniuk as this event progresses.

“I really had no idea what I could catch,” he said. “I fished so many different things in practice and never felt like I had it dialed in. Maybe it’s because I caught fish doing too many different things. I had so many options. I never felt plugged in. I’ve felt like over the last two days I’m starting to put things together more.”

He revisited some areas from day 1 and had success there, and also caught two that counted toward his weight off spots he hadn’t fished yet.

“It’s definitely a good feeling to feel like I know what to look for a little more,” he said. The big fish today among his best five was a 5-11 and his smallest was a 3-09.

One spot he’ll probably visit again is the same locale that produced his big fish on Wednesday. Today, he caught a 4-04 off that spot, but he had to untangle it from a submerged tree before getting it in the boat.

“It got stuck in that tree for probably two full minutes, but I got it out and the coolest part was it was stuck in the exact same tree I caught the 8-pounder from,” he said. “Neither one bit it in the tree, but it just so happens the tree is in my way between where the fish are and where I’m lined up. I lost quite a few so it was nice to have a scenario where I shouldn’t have landed it go my way.”

3rd: Wheeler Having a Blast

> Day 2: 5, 23-07 (10, 44-14)

Wheeler figures he racked up 70 bites today, fishing in water no deeper than 6 feet.

“It’s unbelievable here,” he said. “I had four or five deep places I’d like to fish, but every time I’d rotate through, someone would be there so I said, ‘Screw it’ and went shallow.”

He focused some on grass and also picked over shallow cover along the bank. He thinks the population of fish that’s hanging around the shallow grass are largely post-spawners still in their recovery phase, but he also believes some are on their way out to deeper water after a recent water level fluctuation.

“I definitely think they’re recovering, but I think the water came up a foot in two weeks a little while ago,” he said. “Those fish that were making their way out and that made them stay up there. And some that were deep came back up shallow. Now the water is stabilized or dropping and those fish are starting to slide out deeper.”

Ultimately, he’d like to migrate to deeper water where he spent 20 hours idling during practice, trying to locate areas fish would be headed to.

Jacob Wheeler had a 6-02 kicker anchoring his limit today.

“I’m excited and I’m enjoying it, but I don’t know what’s to come,” he said. “There are a lot of bass here. I didn’t think I could catch what I caught. I’m as shocked as anybody I’ve caught what I have.

“This time of year, historically, those bass are moving out to get into the cooler water and that always seems to prevail this time of year. I still think it will because the fish are heading that way. I’m having a hell of a time doing what I’m doing so I’m not going to second-guess myself.”

4th: Howell Missed a Couple

> Day 2: 5, 19-13 (10, 43-12)

Howell noted that after two days of a typical Elite Series event, the bite tends to get tougher and the leaders have to grind out bites over the final days of competition. This week is a refreshing break from that stress, he says.

“It’s a lot of fun,” he said. “People are spread out and you can fish your strengths and have confidence in what you’re doing. Even if you’re not winning or catching the right size fish, you’re still catching them and you feel like you’re in the game instead of grinding out five.”

He had a shot at another 20-pound stringer, but he had a 5-pounder pull off shortly after he caught a 6-08, which served as his kicker.

“I had chances at a big bag today, but when you’re jerkbaiting with treble hooks, it’s hard to be 100 percent,” he added.

He still has other areas he’d like to explore tomorrow, but it’s been hard to give up on other spots that have been so productive.

“I’d planned to explore more today, but it takes a while to feel like you’re being thorough when you’re catching so many,” he said. “The whole deal here is trying to be efficient and catch some quality fish along with one or two big ones.”

5th: Kicker Came at Right Time For Vinson

> Day 2: 5, 21-15 (10, 43-01)

Vinson has been sampling deep and shallow areas so far, but found today to be more of a grind than Wednesday. His 8-05 kicker was a saving grace, though.

“On day 1, my big fish came early and I was able to put more solid fish with it,” he said. “Today was more of a struggle. It just seems like the better quality fish come later in the day. You’d think it’d be early, but all during practice and today, it’s been later in the day. I’m not sure what’s driving that.”

He believes the wind will help some areas replenish, but he’s going to continue to bounce in and out trying to intercept bigger fish.

“The key has been cycling through areas with better potential for bigger fish,” he said. “Whether it’s an area where I saw one or where I caught one in practice. It’s hard to put a finger on why they’re in a particular stretch.

“I feel like as long as the wind blows different areas will replenish. It generates current and gets bait and fish moving around. You also have to factor in we’re not removing fish from those areas. There’s always a chance to catch a fish someone else caught or you caught the day before.”

He admitted to getting a bit discouraged today, but he remained committed to what he was doing. Before long, he was wrestling an 8-pounder into the boat and now he’s in the top 5.

Greg Vinson has caught quality fish shallow and deep so far.

“That big one saved the day for me,” he said. “It definitely wasn’t meeting my expectations until that point. I kept telling my judge I felt like I’d get that opportunity and I wanted to make sure I put it in the boat.

“The key is to keep moving and not get hung up on one spot or one technique. A couple of them have been stronger, but the key is to keep moving and hope the fish pull up on a spot that hasn’t been fished in a while.”

7th: Cherry Playing Numbers Game

> Day 2: 5, 18-11 (10, 42-03)

Cherry is liking how the event is shaping up after two days. He’s fishing a technique he loves and he’s catching dozens of fish each day doing it. He’s fairly confident he can keep it up, too.

“I’m just trying to do the numbers things,” he said. “As many as I’ve caught I figure I’ll get a shot at two big ones each day. I’m comfortable where I’m at. I’d rather be the hunter in the stand than the prey.”

He hasn’t sampled much of anything that’s exposed to the wind as a torn tendon in his wrist makes it difficult and painful to drive in wavy conditions. He expanded on his day-1 area today and has others areas pegged for tomorrow.

“I’m going to wander around tomorrow, but the game plan is the same,” he said. “I’m going to try to catch 15 pounds, then look for big ones.”

To do that, he may slip out to some deeper grass, where the bites aren’t as frequent, but the chance to intercept a kicker are greater.

“I think I can keep up this pace,” he added. “In my opinion, I’m due for a big day. I had a big day on the first day of practice, but haven’t had it yet in the tournament. I’m just biding my time. A lot of it is a matter of showing up at the right place at the right time.”

11th: Jones’ New Plan Produced

> Day 2: 5, 26-10 (10, 40-01)

Rayburn has a special place in the heart of Jones Jr. Back in his college days, he had a 29-pound day in a Texas Team Trail tournament. Today was special because of how it pushed him up the leaderboard and into the top 12.

“I was blessed,” he said. “I had a big bite yesterday, but didn’t get it. Today, I scrapped my plan and did something a little different. I’d wanted to try it in practice, but this place is so big I didn’t get a chance to. I got more keyed in to where to look and what to look for and all five of the fish I weighed in today came off a place I didn’t practice on.”

It’s a shallow-water strategy and he’s concerned the areas he hit today won’t replenish, but he’s not much concerned.

“I’m going to run to new water tomorrow and hope this can continue,” he added. “I’m going to commit to it tomorrow. Doing what I’m doing, I may not catch a limit, but if I can catch a limit, there’s a good chance I’ll have 25 pounds.”

His big one today was a 7-06 and his smallest was a 4-00. He also lost one in the 7-pound class that would’ve put him in the 30-pound range.

“When I do get bit, they’re the right kind,” he said.
