Lake Cumberland toughened up a bit on the day after the arrival of a massive cold front, surrendering just three bags in excess of 17 pounds to the FLW Tour field on Friday after giving up 13 the previous day – and none of those to anglers who were anywhere near the top of the leaderboard.

Day-1 contenters Clark Wendlandt and Casey Scanlon came pretty close to that mark, though, and they've created a bit of separation between themselves and their competitors as the fourth Tour event of the 2017 season reached its midway point.

Wendlandt boxed 16-15 to move into the lead with a 2-day total of 35-06. Scanlon, who weighed 16-12, is just two ounces back with 35-04.

After that there was a drop of almost 2 1/2 pounds down to 3rd-place Cody Bird, whose 14-01 sack gave him a 32-14 aggregate. Bryan Thrift, the No. 1 angler in the BassFan World Rankings who's threatening to run away with the Angler of the Year title, jumped 16 places to 4th with 31-14 after catching 15-14.

Day-1 leader Scott Martin rounded out the top 5 with 31-07. He managed just 12 pounds on day 2 in the wake of a 19 1/2-pound opening-round stringer.

Here's a look at the current top 10 (deficit margins from the leader are indicated by red numbers in parentheses):

1. Clark Wendlandt: 35-06
2. Casey Scanlon: 35-04 (0-02)
3. Cody Bird: 32-14 (2-08)
4. Bryan Thrift: 31-14 (3-08)
5. Scott Martin: 31-07 (3-15)
6. Chris McCall: 31-03 (4-03)
7. Barry Wilson: 30-11 (4-11)
8. James Watson: 30-06 (5-00)
9. Cody Meyer: 30-02 (5-04)
10. Terry Bolton: 30-00 (5-06)

Weights were down considerably throughout the field – it took 28-11 to make the cut to the top 20 a day after Thrift had occupied that final position with 16 pounds. Competitors who even approached that mark on day 2 made significant climbs in the standings.

The wind blew hard again, but the skies weren't as dark and the heavy rain from day 1 was absent. Those factors, combined with water temperatures that had dropped a few degrees, likely had negative effects on the bite.

Thrift, Wilson (15th to 7th with a 13-13 haul on day 2), Watson (26th to 8th, 15-10) and Bolton (21st to 10th, 14-03) were newcomers to the top 10. They supplanted Larry Nixon (5th to 21st, 10-05), Matt Reed (6th to 20th, 10-12), Jeremy Lawyer (7th to 15th, 11-05) and Dylan Hays (10th to 25th, 10-09), although Reed and Lawyer survived the initial cut.

Casey Scanlon has mined a single locale for more than 35 pounds over the first two days.

The wind is expected to decrease to almost nothing for day 3, which will undoubtedly bring further changes to the giant rocky impoundment. The high temperature is forecast to rise from about 54 to 63.

Only the top 10 after the day-3 weigh-in will advance to Sunday, when the winner will be determined by highest 4-day weight.

Slightly Slower for Wendlandt

> Day 2: 5, 16-15 (10, 35-06)

Wendlandt caught fewer keepers than he had on day 1 and his weight was off by about a pound and a half, but he nonetheless took over the top slot.

"I thought it was a little tougher today," he said. "Conditions were so good yesterday for fishing, and they bit because of that. I didn't think they bit quite as good today."

He boated 10 keepers and ended up taking three smallmouths and two largemouths to the scale. The biggest of those was a 4-pounder.

He said he fished basically the same way he did on the previous day. He had a good bag by early afternoon and made his final cull at 2:30.

If he continues to average 17 1/2 pounds a day, he believes he'll be in good position to claim his fifth Tour victory.

"I think things are going to change over the next couple days with the weather getting nice," he said. "I'll have to make some adjustments, but that's okay.

"For me, it's just going to be a matter of making good decisions. If I feel like the fish have started changing, I'll just have to change with them. I don't think it's going to be easier, but I know I'm around some."

2nd: Scanlon Lacked Bruiser

> Day 2: 5, 16-12 (10, 35-04)

Scanlon's weight was a bit off from day 1 as he didn't have a massive anchor fish like he did in the opening round (a 6-06 specimen).

"Things changed a little bit," he said. "Yesterday was much better for numbers and I had to slow down a little bit today.

He handled about a dozen keepers and weighed in four largemouths and one smallmouth.

"I think I could've caught some more, but they were all the same size fish and I was trying to catch quality and not burn through a bunch that I might need tomorrow or the next day. All three species are in that area and they all seem to be doing different things and relating to different cover. Today I focused on largemouths exclusively."

He's remained in a single area so far. It's one of four he found in practice that he thought held potential.

Cody Bird is using finesse tactics to catch keeper smallmouths.

"So far I haven't been to any of those other places and I don't know if 25 boats have been fishing them the last two days or what. Hopefully I'll have some time tomorrow to run around and check them because they're on the way back in.

"I'd love for the wind to blow again tomorrow, but if it doesn't, it'll affect my bait selection for sure. There's still a lot of fish in the area, but I might have to do some different things."

3rd: Bird Playing the Numbers

> Day 2: 5, 14-01 (10, 32-14)

Bird is finesse-fishing for smallmouths and working through a pile of them, hoping to collect five that meet the 18-inch minimum-length requirement. He came up one short of that goal on day 2 and had to weigh in a small spotted bass.

"I caught two (smallmouths) fairly early, and then I struggled and struggled and struggled," he said. "I think a few of them are on beds, but they're so deep I can't see them. I've caught the same 17-incher off a rock three times.

"Some are cruising up and feeding when the wind blows and the water gets stained. I've caught them as shallow as two feet, but most of them are in 12 to 14."

With only three smallmouths in his livewell in the early afternoon, he ran to the back of a creek and caught a couple of spots to fill out his limit. He then returned to his main area and connected with one more brown fish.

"Maybe I should've stayed, but I'd been meaning to let that spot rest. I needed a rest from it, too."

He said he caught at least a dozen smallmouths that measured between 16 and 17 3/4 inches.

"I'm just playing the game for the 'overs' and every once in a while I get lucky."

4th: Thrift Mixing it Up

> Day 2: 5, 15-14 (10, 31-14)

Thrift made his big move up the standings sheet despite a bag that was two ounces lighter than his day-1 haul.

"As far as bites, it was probably a little better for me today," he said. "I fished for some largemouths and ended up catching a limit by 10 o'clock, and then I went and fished for smallmouths and ended up catching three that I weighed in.

"I struggled to catch largemouths in practice and I struggled to catch keeper smallmouths, so I thought it was best to go for a mixed bag. It's worked so far."

Bryan Thrift climbed 16 places in the standings on day 2.

He boated about 10 keepers, including a pair of 3 1/2-pound smallmouths. He didn't lose anything.

He'll welcome some calmer conditions if they arrive on day 3.

"I just want to be comfortable – I'm tired of being cold and getting blown around by the wind. It's the first week of April and I want it to be nice."

5th: No Green Ones for Martin

> Day 2: 5, 12-00 (10, 31-07)

Martin had nothing but spots in his livewell before catching two keeper smallmouths late in the day. He didn't catch a single largemouth.

"I think where I'm fishing and with what I'm doing, the fish are a little more sensitive to cool weather," he said. "Tomorrow could be good – if the sun comes out and it warms up a little bit, the fish could start getting back in better positions.

"I lost a couple that would've given me a little more weight, so I had some opportunities today that I didn't take advantage of."

He plans to run a lot of new water on day 3.

"I'm fishing places where I haven't been, which is fun. When you're having fun, good things can happen.

"I'll check my GPS tonight and look for places in and around the area and see what I haven't hit yet, then go out tomorrow and mix it up."

21st: Nixon Down 8 Pounds

> Day 2: 5, 10-05 (10, 28-10)

Nixon's stringer was 8 pounds lighter than his day-1 catch and he missed the initial cut by one position.

"I think the water had gotten just cold enough (from the front that moved in Thursday) that the wind wasn't enough to make them bite," he said. "I tried to get on that wind bite and if one existed, I didn't figure it out and a lot of other people struggled too."

His bag consisted of two largemouths, a smallmouth and two dinky spots.

"I did lost one good smallmouth that was almost certainly a keeper. I fought it a long time and I thought it was done, but then it came up and jumped four feet in the air."
