This wasn’t how Jacob Wheeler anticipated things would go on day 1 at the Toledo Bend Elite Series. Never during or after practice did he think he’d find his way to the top of the leaderboard with more than 25 pounds. He said he’d have been satisfied with considerably less.

“I thought if I could catch 15 (pounds) a day, I’d have taken that,” he said. “This was way over what I thought I could do.”

On a lake that was still rolling due to a stiffer-than-expected breeze that made moving long distances between points A and B difficult and time-consuming, Wheeler compiled a 25-01 stringer, one of seven 20-pound bags today, to kick off the third Elite Series tournament of the season.

“Practice stunk for me,” said Wheeler, who won the season opener at Cherokee Lake and is seeking his third Elite Series win in just his fourth event on the circuit. “It was nothing great. I caught a few, but it was tough. I didn’t know what I was going to do. I just junk-fished mostly.”

That junk-fishing approach has him 6 ounces ahead of Brett Hite, who has made 20-pound bags at Toledo Bend a habit. Hite caught 25-07 on the final day of last year’s tournament to claim a 7th-place finish. Coupled with today’s 24-11, that’s more than 50 pounds over his last 2 competition days on the massive reservoir that straddles the Texas-Louisiana border.

Elite Series rookie Jamie Hartman, who was the runner-up to Wheeler at Cherokee, is 3rd with 23-05.

He’s followed by two accomplished veterans – Jason Christie occupies the 4th spot following a 21-05 effort that included a 9-10 kicker, while Steve Kennedy, who took 2nd in the Bassmaster Classic 2 weeks ago, caught 20-08 to sneak into the top 5.

Here's a look at the top 12 after day 1, with deficit margin from Wheeler indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Jacob Wheeler: 25-01
2. Brett Hite: 24-11 (0-06)
3. Jamie Hartman: 23-05 (1-12)
4. Jason Christie: 21-05 (3-12)
5. Steve Kennedy: 20-08 (4-09)
6. Todd Faircloth: 20-02 (4-15)
7. Matt Lee: 20-00 (5-01)
8. Brandon Palaniuk: 19-13 (5-04)
9. John Crews: 18-11 (6-06)
10. Alton Jones, Sr.: 18-05 (6-12)
11. Andy Montgomery: 18-03 (6-14)
12. Gerald Swindle: 18-03 (6-14)

Jordan Lee kicked off his reign as Classic champion with a 13-14 stringer that has him in a tie for 47th place while Kevin VanDam, last year’s winner at Toledo Bend, started with 14-14 and sits in 34th.

The refrain throughout practice was that the lake is a different beast than in years past. It’s a different spot on the calendar and the fish seem to be scattered all through the spawning cycle. Add to that the water being lower than it was a year ago and a significant drop-off in certain types of shallow-water vegetation and it’s created a more challenging playing field.

The wind, which howled all day Wednesday for the final practice tune-up, wasn’t as harsh today, but it was persistent and stiffer than what was forecast. The prolonged blows have taken some areas out of play for now and made some offshore spots unfishable. It’s not expected to be as breezy Friday, but the overnight low is going to dip into the 40s, so that may blunt any early-morning shad-spawn activity.

Another item to monitor is how much of a role sight-fishing will play the rest of the way. Some areas of the lake are loaded with 2- to 3-pound males and those might attract some attention with the hope that a heftier female is lurking nearby. With the wind tailing off and high-sky conditions in the forecast, looking will likely play a part in a lot of competitors’ strategies.

The top 51 after Friday will advance to Saturday, with the top 12 after day 3 moving on to compete on Sunday, when the winner will be determined by the highest cumulative weight.

Wheeler Not Sure What Friday Will Hold

> Day 1: 5, 25-01

Wheeler said he rigged up close to three dozen rods for this event. He estimates roughly 30 of them were put into use one point or another today.

“I caught the five I weighed in doing three totally different things,” he said.

He’s not terribly confident another 20-plus pound stringer is possible, but the conditions should allow him to move around a bit more.

“I can go out and might not catch a bass tomorrow,” he said. “I’m not thinking they’re very dependable. It’s not like I have a winning hole that I’m going to sit on the next 3 days and catch 25 each day. I just bounced around and was fortunate to catch a big bag. I don’t have one stretch of bank or one pocket. I just fished what was in front of me.”

Of the three techniques he used to build his limit – he tallied a dozen keepers – he favors one specifically, but said it’s the least stable of the three.

“I have an idea of what I want to do,” he said. “Whether they will cooperate is another story. It’s the most fragile out of the three things I’m doing.”

Still, there’s no denying the momentum and confidence he’s gaining with each passing day he spends at or near the top of the standings.

“No doubt, momentum is the biggest thing in our sport, just like other spots,” he said. “I had a hiccup at Okeechobee on day 1, but every other day I’ve caught ‘em. Realistically, I’m fishing good and feel good about it. I’m making good decisions and you have to cherish these moments because I know it’s not like this all the time. I’m definitely enjoying it as it happens.”

Brett Hite caught a good limit early, then developed another pattern later in the day.

2nd: Hite On a Roll

> Day 1: 5, 24-11

If the tournament had started Tuesday, Hite would’ve had a good feeling heading into it. Since it started today, on the heels of two sub-par practice days, he wasn’t sure what to expect.

He’s more than pleased with the 24-11 that has him firmly on Wheeler’s bumper.

“I had a decent first day of practice, but the last two days were horrible,” he said. “I found a couple good areas that first day and tried to duplicate it afterwards. It didn’t pan out. I went in that area where I’d had the most bites in practice. I started there and caught 19 pounds and hopped around.”

He added two good upgrades later in the day doing something he feels like could sustain him later in the tournament.

“I figured something out later in the day and what I figured out later I think I can catch some big ones doing it,” he said. “It’s tough to catch ‘em. There are ones that want to spawn and some are ready to go. Then there are ones that are spawning and don’t want to eat.”

After a 101st-place dud at Cherokee, Hite put together top-15 efforts at Okeechobee and the Classic and appears poised to make a run another a top-12 finish at Toledo Bend.

“I had a good tournament at Okeechobee and had a good opportunity at the Classic and regained my momentum there,” he said. “I’m just fishing good right now and making the right decisions.”

3rd: Hartman Bounces Back

> Day 1: 5, 23-05

Jamie Hartman felt like he’d grown familiar with Toledo Bend as a result of the 2 weeks he spent there before it went off-limits. Then practice started, he said, and the lake became like a passerby in a shopping mall.

He figured it out just time Thursday and now finds himself in the top 5.

“I thought I had a comfort level until we started practice,” he said. “I had a bad practice. It’s nice to whack another good bag and have people look at my name again after such a downfall at Okeechobee.

“I’m happy with today, but now that I’m there, it means nothing to me because I have 2 or 3 more days left. I want to stay in that check range.”

Jamie Hartman overcame a poor practice to catch three 5-plus pound brutes today.

The biggest fish he caught in practice was 3 1/4 pounds, but today he had a 6-plus pounder and a pair that weighed more than 5 pounds each. Two came earlier this morning and one of the 5-pounders showed up this afternoon.

“I got some key bites today that I didn’t expect,” he said, adding that he fished mostly slow and along the bottom. "I had to switch up again today. It seems to be a good move. I don’t know what tomorrow will bring.”

4th: Big One Boosted Christie

> Day 1: 5, 21-05

Christie didn’t like having 10 or so rods spread across his deck today. He usually prefers to be dialed in with a couple, maybe three, rods max. He’ll happily utilize all his rods if he has to if it means he’ll catch 20-plus pounds the rest of the way this week.

“This is the way I don’t like it,” he said. “I’m fishing the same pattern, but using different baits according to the water color. Some places that were clear in practice are now dirty because of the wind and there are other places that cleared up.”

He didn’t sense he was around a bunch of quality fish, but he did wrangle in a 9-10 brute that stood up as the big bass for day 1.

“That was a nice surprise,” he said. “You don’t plan on catching one that big. It just showed up. A fish like that probably moves me up 40 places. I’m not around the kind of fish to win, not yet anyway.”

5th: Kennedy Focused On Winning

> Day 1: 5, 20-08

Kennedy had a limited practice – roughly 1 1/2 days – but he settled into a strategy today that might be able to carry him to another top-end finish.

“I caught way more than what I expected to catch,” he said.

The line of violent storms that tore across the south Sunday delayed his arrival at the lake until Monday morning so he wasn’t able to get on the water until noon on day 1 of practice. After a full day of practice Tuesday, he opted to skip the final day of practice due to the harsh winds.

Jason Christie had to mix and match bait colors with water clarity today, but still came out with 21-05.

“I had a few bites, but nothing spectacular,” he said, referring to his practice. “I found a bunch of bucks (Tuesday), but I never found a single fish that I felt like I had to start on. I figured out how to catch a bunch of fish.”

His strategy coming in was to get a limit in the boat before he went big-fish hunting around spawning areas. He did that to the tune of 10 or 12 pounds, then he was “able to play,” Kennedy said, referring to his shift in attention to spawners.

“I found a big one and got it to bite four or five times, but missed her each time,” he said. “A few other boats came in there and I tried to play some defense so I got off that fish for a bit. I then threw my swimbait up there like I usually do to see what would happen and she choked it.”

He then relied on the swimbait for the next four hours, catching two more quality fish and having another show itself in an area he might revisit tomorrow.

“I saw a bunch of 2- to 2 1/2-pounders,” he said. “There is about a billion of them. The big ones aren’t where they’re supposed to be. They’re not far enough along where there’s a bunch of them in certain areas. I don’t know where the next bite is coming. I love fishing these Texas lakes because they have big fish that will choke that (swimbait).”

Coming off a second-place finish in the Classic, Kennedy’s desire to claim his first Elite Series win since 2011 is growing stronger.

“Ten years ago, it seemed like I’d win one every so often,” he said. “Now, I’m second or third or fourth or I’m a bite away from winning. I’ve missed four or five of them would’ve won it. The Classic exacerbates that. There’s a lot of mixed emotions that come with finishing second. I’m certainly motivated and am trying to win. I like how this place sets up.”

6th: Faircloth Felt ‘Freed Up’

> Day 1: 5, 20-02

Fishing close to home can be an added stressor during a tournament. Getting off to a slow start in a tournament close to home can quickly ramp up that stress level. That wasn’t an issue for Todd Faircloth today as the Jasper, Texas, native got settled in this morning and liked how the day went from there.

“I’m real pleased with what I caught,” he said. “I didn’t know what to expect today. I had a decent practice, but not great. It’s not real easy to get a bite. It’s not the Toledo Bend that we’re used to. I caught a few decent fish in practice, but as far as getting a lot of bites, that’s not happening. I’m pretty tickled with what I did today.”

He said three different patterns produced today and he still has water he didn’t fish that he has confidence in.

“I got off to a good start and fished real free,” he said. “If I had an idea pop in my head and I wasn’t planning on it, I’d go do it. A couple times that paid off.

“I had good moments throughout the day. Getting off to a decent start this morning makes me fish more calmly. I wasn’t pressing at all. Whenever you’re in that freed-up zone, and get a decent start, it allows you to fish more instinctively.”

91st (tie): Vinson Unshaken

> Day 1: 5, 9-13

After the start to the season Greg Vinson has had (109th at Cherokee Lake, 107th at Lake Okeechobee), one would think that a 9-13 bag on day 1 at Toledo Bend would have him on the verge of selling off everything in his boat.

That’s not the case at all. In fact, Vinson was encouraged by what he saw today and is optimistic about a day-2 rally that could draw him into cut range.

“I should be really bummed out about 10 pounds and while I’m certainly not happy about it, I made the best decisions based on what I know and saw from practice,” he said. “I had some very close calls today. I didn’t lose them; they just wouldn’t commit. It was close to a good day, but I had a bad day on paper.”

He still has confidence in his game plan heading out Friday and that’s rooted in elements he saw on the final practice day.

“I’m in a good area and I know I’m around good fish,” he said. “Rather than fishing blind, I’m going to do my deal. I’ll stick with what I think could and should happen.

“I was pretty encouraged because when you’re sight fishing, you’re usually limited, but I’ve been able to mix in quality bites just fishing in between.”

Notable

> Jesse Wiggins caught five keepers today, but only came in with four that weighed 14-15, good for 33rd place. He’s not certain what happened, but suspects his livewell may have popped open while he was running and one of the fish escaped. He figures it was a 2 1/2- to 2 3/4-pounder. “I remember shutting the livewell lid after stopping,” he said via text message. “It was on a cull clip and it's gone as well.”

> Shaw Grigsby brought a large gizzard shad on stage that his biggest fish had coughed up in his livewell today. The bass weighed 8-03. Curious what the gizzard shad weighed, Grigsby then put it in the bag with the big fish. The scale registered 8-13, so it was a 10-ounce swing for the Floridian, who’s in 36th with 14-10.
