For his money, Todd Castledine says the current crop of bass anglers he competes against regularly in southeast Texas is as stout as any group you’ll find anywhere in the country. Whether it’s in a local or regional circuit or in a national series like the FLW Series, the competition is always fierce and no tournament is ever over until the last cast is retrieved.

Castledine says much of the credit for the deep talent pool should go to Sam Rayburn Reservoir, the massive lake that sits just south of Nacogdoches, where he resides. Along with Toledo Bend Reservoir, it has served as the training (and proving) ground for numerous current tour-level pros and many others who thrive at the triple-A level.

“It’s non-stop guys who get to fish year-round,” Castledine said. “Rayburn is so diverse – that’s where it all happens. Most of those guys who fish here make their names at Rayburn or Toledo (Bend). There are more tournaments here than anywhere in the country so you have to figure it out quick and I love it. I wouldn’t want it any other way. If you can feel like you can go against them, you can go against anyone.”

Not only was Castledine up against the usual suspects last week at the Sam Rayburn Southwestern FLW Series, he found himself dealing with the aftereffects of the flu all week. Still, he managed to qualify for the final day in 9th place, more than 5 pounds behind day-2 leader and longtime friend Jason Bonds.

“I just tried to survive the first two days,” he said.

On the morning of the final day, Castledine was in rough shape. He hadn’t eaten anything substantial in a few days and suspects he lost close to 15 pounds over the course of the week. Somehow, he fought through it all and pulled off a comeback for the ages with a mammoth 27-00 stringer that gave him his second career FLW Series win.

He averaged 22-plus pounds per day and finished with 66-11 to beat Bonds by 3-11 and take home $50,500 from an event that started with 207 boats.

Asked where this improbable victory ranks in his mind, he said it’s close to the top of the list.

“The first one was the first one I won,” he said. “You never forget the first one. I like the first one because I led the whole time. It was all sight-fishing and everything went my way. I don’t know if anything went my way in this tournament. I was sick and didn’t practice much.

“I’ve led two of these and broke down on final day and it’s cost me by ounces so I always though it’d be cool to be at the bottom and bring in a giant bag and come from behind. I didn’t think this would be the tournament, but I’d always thought it’d be pretty neat.”

Neat, indeed. Here are some more details about how Castledine pulled off the Rayburn Rally.

U-Turn Paid Off

The path to victory for Castledine wasn’t clear until late in the day on Saturday. That’s when he listened to his gut and came off plane and went back to an area where he’d just marked a few fish at, but opted not to make any casts. Upon his return, within two casts, he caught a 9-plus pounder that suddenly made him a contender.

“I wish I could make this up,” he said in starting to recount how Saturday afternoon played out.

Thanks to a square-bill crankbait and a swimjig, he sacked roughly 17 pounds in the first hour of the day, then had no bites until 11 a.m. He sight-fished a 5-pounder and a 4-pounder to get some momentum going, then visited a known big-fish area, but saw nothing of consequence.

“I figured I’d hit a deep spot that I hadn’t hit in a month or so,” he said. “I’d been graphing it in practice and it had been getting worse. I get set up on it and all lined up and make a cast. My bait hits bottom and I drag it twice, but it just didn’t feel right.”

So he left with the intention to go fish a drain, but before he left he graphed the deep spot one last time. His electronics revealed a couple smaller fish and one larger blip. Still, it wasn’t enough to convince him to stay.

“I left, but after I got about a mile away, I did a u-turn,” Castledine said. “My co-angler was like, ‘What are you doing?’”

He came back to the area, got lined up again and within two casts with a Strike King Rage Tail Anaconda worm, he caught the fish that essentially won him the tournament – on the last cast he made that day.

“It wasn’t really my decision,” he said in an attempt to explain his audible. “The Good Lord had something to do with it. I know he did. It wasn’t as windy there and even all my fishing partners will tell you that’s the first time I’ve ever done that in 20 years.”

He said the fact that he was so far out of the lead on Saturday contributed to his unscripted approach that day.

Castledine's 27-00 stringer on Saturday was anchored by this 9-plus pound brute.

“I would like to say it was smart and thought out, but most of all I was relaxed and approached it like I had nothing to lose,” he said. “It got calm right away and I went sight-fishing. There was nothing on beds, so I went deep.

“When you’re leading, it’s hard because everything matters. I could’ve zeroed and only fallen one spot. It’s maybe the most relaxed day 3 I’ve ever spent on the water.”

Winging It Worked

In what was predominantly a sight-fishing tournament, Castledine strayed from his typical gameplan in such events largely due to his physical well-being. His practice was disjointed at best.

“When I sight-fish, I like to have a 3-day plan,” he said. “I try to be very organized and have everything very thought out. What I’ve learned with sight-fishing is I like to have 40 fish marked. I don’t like going on the fly, but that’s what I did. I was so far out of my comfort zone that I just did it.”

The first day of practice for him was a struggle just get on the water. He spent much of the second day at the doctor’s office and the third day was marked by steady rain.

“The day before the event I was just trying to figure out if I can get to fish,” he said.

He had a few bedding fish marked to start the tournament, but the first one he checked on Thursday was gone.

“I had to go to fish I didn’t want to just to get a limit,” he said. “From there on, they were changing. Most were in the backs of creeks. It had rained and it dirtied up the water, but fish hadn’t pushed to any other part of the lake.”

He started checking areas he hadn’t looked at in practice, but had had success at in the past. That’s when he got clued in to what was happening.

“I just started going to new areas,” he said. “I’d be like, ‘I’m gonna go to that place because I’ve caught some there before.’ I caught a 5 1/2 doing that and realized no one else was doing that. It wasn’t main lake stuff. The hay had to look right. It all started making sense on day 1.”

On Friday, he vowed to hit all new water, but stuff that would match what he’d found Thursday. He went back to where he’d caught the 5 1/2 on Thursday and stumbled onto a giant.

“I saw a glimpse of a tail going into the hay and flipped in there and caught a 9, which turned out to be half of my bag,” he said.

His knowledge of the lake and his aversion to plying the same approach as others is what allowed him to tap into the fish that made a difference for him.

“When people start looking, I try to get off the beaten pat,” he said. “On day 1 only one of the fish I planned on catching was found. I sometimes give up good areas, but I’ll find fish nobody else finds. I found some in a creek that was dirty and went in there and caught two big ones (Saturday), which were big for day 3 of a sight derby. I caught another in there that didn’t cull. I’m just one of those guys who tries to get away from the crowd.”

Pattern Notes

> In describing the offshore spot that produced the fish that swung the outcome in his favor Saturday, Castledine said, “It’s a little depression in 18 feet with stumps around it. It’s basically a depression on a hump with one or two tall stumps around it and the fish tend to always be around those.”

Winning Gear Notes

> Sight-fishing gear: 7’3” extra-heavy Falcon Rods Cara Reaction swimbait rod, Lew's Super Duty Speed Spool casting reel (8.0:1 ratio), 65-pound unnamed braided line, 3/8-oz. unnamed worm weight, 5/0 Owner Monster EWG worm hook, Strike King Rage Bug (California craw, blue craw).

> Worm gear: 7’6” heavy-action Falcon Rods Carolina Cara casting rod, Lew's Speed Spool casting reel, 25-pound Sunline Shooter fluorocarbon line, 1/4-oz. unnamed worm weight, 5/0 Gamakatsu EWG superline hook, Strike King Rage Tail Anaconda (green-pumpkin).

> The Strike King KVD 2.5 square-bill and a Strike King swimjig were also effective at helping Castledine pick up fish to fill his limits each day.

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – “Probably having no pressure and having no expectation of winning. I just went with the flow with no set game plan. I’m a game plan guy, but it helped me to not have to worry about what I was doing.”

> Performance edge – “My Power-Poles were incredibly value and the new Costa Sunrise lens was a huge difference maker when I was sight-fishing.”
