Lake Guntersville turned into Lake Strugglesville today. For some, it was Lake Zeroesville.
After yielding 66 limits to the 165-boat field on Thursday, the esteemed TVA lake turned exceeding stingy today, churning out just 39 limits on a day when the windy conditions added another layer to the already challenging wintertime conditions.
Only a select few were able to back up their solid day-1 efforts with a commensurate stringer today. Among them was Mark Rose, who more than anyone this week has been enthused by how the lake is fishing. While most of the field endured the Guntersville Grind, Rose tacked on 20-04 and moved into the lead at the halfway point with 42-09.
Rose already had a sterling reputation on the Tennessee River and his performance on a day that saw more than a quarter of the field fail to catch more than one fish will only bolster his status. The number of pros who zeroed today (23) more than doubled from day 1 (10) as Guntersville flexed its mid-winter muscles on day 2 of the season opener.
Only three anglers who were in the Top 10 after Thursday are still there. Bryan Thrift is one of them as the North Carolina pro sacked 18-11 and moved up two spots to 2nd with 39-08. Rose and Thrift were the only competitors to follow up their 20-pound bags from day 1 with a limit today.
Barry Wilson posted another solid day with 18-04 that bumped him into 3rd with 36-06 while Tour rookie Justin Atkins delivered a 17-12 stringer to jump up to 4th with 36-04. Shinichi Fukae added 16-06 today and has 34-10 in 5th.
Here's a look at the Top 10 after the second day of competition with the deficit margin from Rose indicated by red numbers in parentheses:
1. Mark Rose: 42-09
2. Bryan Thrift: 39-08 (3-01)
3. Barry Wilson: 36-06 (6-03)
4. Justin Atkins: 36-04 (6-05)
5. Shinichi Fukae: 34-10 (7-15)
6. Randy Blaukat: 34-07 (8-02)
7. Alex Davis: 34-04 (8-05)
8. Jason Reyes: 34-02 (8-07)
9. Andy Morgan: 34-01 (8-08)
10. Scott Suggs: 33-13 (8-12)
While 6-plus pounds separates the four anglers atop the standings, just 13 ounces separates Fukae from Scott Suggs in 10th.
Reigning Angler of the Year Andy Morgan assured himself of a fifth straight Top-20 finish in a full-field event with a 15-08 stringer that has him in 9th place entering the weekend.
Day-1 leader Jay Kendrick tumbled out of contention today after catching just one fish for 3-02. He wound up 26th, just 1-01 out of the Top-20 cut. Stephen Patek slipped from 3rd to 28th after weighing two fish for 7-01. Todd Hollowell managed three keepers for 12-11, which was enough to keep him in the mix in 13th. Larry Nixon also struggled after having a big bag on Thursday. Nixon bagged two fish for 6-03 and slipped from 6th to 35th.
Scott Martin, the current top-ranked pro in the BassFan World Rankings, had his worst finish since 2009 this week (127th).
The sun made an appearance today and seemed to help a few anglers, but it obviously didn’t ignite a furious bite across the lake, which saw stiff winds create difficult conditions for those wishing to fish slowly and methodically.
The water level, which had dropped a foot on Wednesday and put a lot of floating eelgrass on the bank, came back up today and washed some of the debris back into the lake.
The current flow has remained consistent and has some fish positioned in predictable areas, but the bottom line remains the vast majority of bass at Guntersville this week are locked in their winter pattern and timing on specific spots will continue to be of utmost importance over the final two days.
The Top 20 will compete tomorrow with the Top 10 advancing to the final round Sunday when the winner being determined by highest cumulative weight.
Rose In A Comfort Zone
> Day 2: 5, 20-04 (10, 42-09)
Rose has extensive experience at Guntersville and he’s drawing upon that this week as he pursues his third career FLW Tour victory.
“It has exceeded my expectations,” he said. “I felt good about catching fish. I wasn’t thinking I wasn’t going to catch them coming in. I’ve gotten a few better bites than what I saw in practice. It feels good to get off to a good start with all the new equipment. Now, I’m in a position to try to win a tournament.”
To do that, he plans to stay on the same heading that’s gotten him to this point – following his instincts and trusting his decisions.
“I don’t know when (the bites) are coming,” he said. “I just fish what looks good and what my gut tells me. The conditions changed today and I changed with them. I have fished a lot of tournaments on Guntersville and I’ve seen a lot of this water. That helps because if the wind starts blowing or something, I feel like I know places I’ve caught them in the past, whether it’s on the east side or west side of the lake.”
He had his limit by 9 this morning and made a key upgrade with about an hour to go in his day. He caught some fish cranking today, some flipping and others on other moving baits. Three of his fish came off spots he hadn’t made a cast on yet this week.
“I’m not catching a ton of fish,” he said. “Sometimes, it’s two an hour and sometimes I’ll go two hours without a bite.”
Looking ahead, he’s concerned about how low the air temperature will fall Friday night. That may impact where he starts Saturday.
“I’m optimistic,” he said. “I still have a lot of stuff and I’m thinking in my mind where it could be good. I don’t like how cold it’s supposed to get tonight – that’s the X-factor.”
Bryan Thrift hopes to build upon an area he found Friday when he heads back out on Lake Guntersville for day 3.
2nd: Big Bites Crucial For Thrift
> Day 2: 5, 18-11 (10, 39-08)
Thrift continued to pick off keepers “here and there” today, but he uncovered one area in particular that will be worth a return visit on Saturday.
“I did hit one place where I caught eight or 10,” he said. “The rest of them were just singles. I hope it stays that way. I still have stuff from practice I haven’t fished yet.
“I’m hoping that place I found today will reload and if I’m struggling, I should be able to go there and catch a limit, if there are still fish there. If they’re there, it should be good for 13 or 14 pounds.”
He said the wind today was nothing more than a nuisance, adding that it opened up some other areas by clearing away gobs of floating eelgrass that made it hard to present baits effectively. He’s unsure if he’ll be able to keep up his nearly 20-pound per day pace.
“It’s all about getting that good bite,” he said. “You can’t win with 3-pounders. I need 4s and 5s or a giant bite.”
His big fish today was 4 1/2 pounds and he caught more than a dozen keepers.
“I’ve definitely surprised myself so far,” he added. “My expectations after practice were to hope to catch a limit.”
3rd: Wilson Hoping For Sun
> Day 2: 5, 18-04 (10, 36-06)
For Wilson, he’s hoping the sunshine that’s in the forecast for Saturday will bring about the same results as today when the sun poked through.
“That’s when I really started catching them,” he said. “Then it went away and things slowed down. What I’m doing, it’ll play right into that. It’s a real simple deal in transition areas where the fish have moved up and they’re just feeding up.”
He said prior to the off-limits period, the weather around Guntersville was spring-like with temperatures reaching into the upper 70s and low 80s for a week straight. That brought the water temperature up and the fish began to move to their staging areas.
“Most people don’t think about fishing shallow in February, but in Alabama that’s what we do,” he added. “Some fish pulled up and they are gorging themselves and getting ready to spawn.”
The spot that produced his best fish today he hadn’t fished since practice. He described it as a ditch off a flat and the fish are hanging around the deeper water. He caught his three best fish within a 15-minute span, including a pair of 4-pounders that joined the 4-pounder he’d caught earlier in the day. He’s done most of his damage with a lipless crankbait.
So far, he’s on pace with what he caught in practice and he figures an 18-pound daily average will keep him in contention for the win.
Barry Wilson has been pleased with how the success he had in practice has carried over to the tournament days.
“Somebody’s going to fall, but I could, too,” he said. “I don’t know what will happen tomorrow. The spot should be replenishing. My main area from Thursday, I couldn’t fish it today because of all the debris washing in there.”
4th: Atkins Cool Under Pressure
> Day 2: 5, 17-12 (10, 36-04)
Atkins is 2 days into his FLW Tour career and already he’s trying to approach the rest of this tournament like a seasoned veteran. He doesn’t want to get too excited about his prospect of winning for fear that he might lose focus on what he needs to keep doing.
“I’m trying not to get too jacked up,” he said. “I just want to stay focused. (On Wednesday night), I told my buddy that I was more excited about going out and catching them because I knew I was going to. I’m more focused on the enjoyment of catching fish. I’ll look back on all of it later, but I have to stay focused on the task at hand and catch what bites.
“I am thrilled, though. I needed a good tournament out of the gate, just for a confidence boost and to get started right.”
The 26-year-old who lives in Florence, Ala., didn’t change much from his day-1 approach. He’s stuck with the same game plan as he’s continued to fish the backside of a river bar where a certain type of vegetation seems to be holding a good population of fish. He’s shared the area with Randy Blaukat, who’s in 6th place, for the first 2 days.
“They’re obviously still there,” he said. “I’m going to start there again like I have the last 2 days.”
He has other good areas and additional spots he thinks are good one-fish spots, but he wants to see if his main area reloads again.
“The last 2 days, I’ve caught a big one to really boost my weight,” he added. “I caught a big one each day in practice and that’s key to me getting a big bag. I haven’t really leaned on anything. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.”
5th: Timing Was Off for Fukae
> Day 2: 5, 16-06 (10, 34-10)
Typically, Fukae can be seen with a spinning rod in hand, employing finesse tactics where others would sling a moving bait. This week, however, Fukae has stowed the spinning tackle and has put together 2 solid days that have him inside the Top 5 after 2 days.
“It’s getting tougher,” Fukae said. “I caught nine keepers Thursday and only five today. It’s a timing deal. I will adjust tomorrow and hopefully catch some more. I had some bad timing today. I caught 16 pounds so that’s still good for me.”
Fukae’s comfort level at Guntersville stems from its similarity to Lake Biwa, Fukae’s home lake in Japan.
“I know how to catch fish there and I know what to throw,” he added.
He fished through about 10 spots today, but has two or three areas where his best fish have come from. Those areas seem to produce more in the morning.
“Today was harder with that wind,” he said. “I had a limit around 10 a.m. After that, I had no bites. That 6 hours killed me today.”
9th: Morgan Back In The Mix
> Day 2: 5, 15-08 (10, 34-01)
Morgan showed up at Guntersville with a pretty good idea how the bass would be behaving. He’d been fishing at Lake Chickamauga recently and noticed the fish were in the winter pattern. When they’re like that, he says, timing is everything.
“It’s still wintertime,” he said. “I’ve said it since I left the house. It’s so tough to put five bass together a day. There’s no push of fish wanting to spawn. You’re catching them feeding since there’s no transition or migration back to spawn. They are where they are. They’re in that wintertime pattern. You either catch them feeding or you don’t catch them.”
Justin Atkins is trying to keep his emotions in check after making the top-20 cut in his first FLW Tour event.
The three-time AOY said he didn’t learn a whole lot today that might help him tomorrow. He’s been cranking a Livingston Lures Flatmaster and also slinging a jig and a worm. He’s caught keepers off wood, brush and grass so far.
“I have no great ideas for tomorrow,” he added. “I was just sitting there tying up rods and was thinking, ‘Where am I going and what am I doing to do?’ I’m just fishing anything I come to. I’m not just targeting a certain type of deal by any means.”
107th: Morehead At A Loss
> Day 2: 0, 0-0 (5, 14-00)
After catching a 14-pound bag on Thursday, Dan Morehead had high hopes for today. Those aspirations evaporated when the area that produced for him yesterday suddenly went dormant other than a couple non-keepers.
It’s the third straight season he’s failed to cash a check in the season opener.
“It was very irritating,” he said. “It was brutal, absolutely brutal. I’ve been driving (home) for 2 hours now scratching my head trying to figure out why.”
On Thursday, he scrapped his vibrating jig game plan and targeted main-lake areas with a lipless crankbait. By 12:30, he had a limit and his spirits were on the rise.
“I felt good about catching fish today, but it just didn’t happen,” he said. “When the sun came out today, I thought, ‘Well, this is it.’ Nope.
“Even though the water temp is 51 or 52, in January and early February, the bite window is so narrow that if you’re not in the right place at the right time, it makes for a long darn day.”
