All week long, the talk at the Mississippi River Elite Series has been about how valuable 3-pound fish will be. With so much at stake points-wise in the regular-season finale and with so many cookie-cutter 2-pounders swimming around in pools 7, 8 and 9, competitors knew any specimen in the 3-pound class or bigger would go a long way in gaining separation from their competitors.

So imagine Ott DeFoe’s glee when he tangled with a 6-pound, 1-ounce largemouth this afternoon shortly before having to head back to the dock. That fish provided the Tennessee pro a 4-pound upgrade over his smallest fish and anchored his 17-11 stringer that catapulted him into the lead at the halfway point of the derby with a 35-02 total.

“That fish was basically the equivalent of two fish here,” DeFoe said.

DeFoe’s late-day kicker gave him nearly a 2-pound lead over Jordan Lee, who moved up a spot to 2nd with 33-04 after he sacked 16-02.

DeFoe and Lee both came into this event with very little pressure as both had all but locked up berths in next week’s Angler of the Year Championship and next year’s Bassmaster Classic. Seth Feider, however, still needs a lot of things to go his way in order to punch a ticket to Mille Lacs in his home state next week. He did his part today, catching a tournament-best 19-05 to run his total to 32-06, which has him in 3rd, a 39-spot jump from day 1. He’s also improved 17 spots in the points standings (to 52nd), but likely needs to win the tournament and get additional help to sneak inside the Top 50.

Edwin Evers held onto 4th with a 13-15 bag that gave him 30-12. Alton Jones improved nine spots to 5th with 30-07 after he caught 15-12.

Here's a look at the Top 12 following the second day of competition, with deficit margin from DeFoe indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Ott DeFoe: 35-02
2. Jordan Lee: 33-04 (1-14)
3. Seth Feider: 32-06 (2-12)
4. Edwin Evers: 30-12 (4-06)
5. Alton Jones: 30-07 (4-11)
6. David Mullins: 30-07 (4-11)
7. Casey Ashley: 30-06 (4-12)
8. Todd Faircloth: 29-14 (5-04)
9. Brandon Card: 29-12 (5-06)
10. Clifford Pirch: 29-07 (5-11)
11. Jason Williamson: 29-02 (6-00)
12. Jared Lintner: 29-00 (6-02)

The race for AOY again remained largely unchanged as points leader Gerald Swindle made his ninth straight Top-50 cut this season in 26th, four spots ahead of Keith Combs, his closest challenger in the AOY chase. Swindle’s lead on Combs will be 41 points when they leave the dock Saturday morning.

Jason Williamson bagged 16-05 today to move up 33 spots to 11th, but more importantly he’s now inside the Classic points cut in 34th place. He can’t afford to slip much, though, as just 12 points separates 32nd from 39th in the AOY standings.

A massive storm system moved across Minnesota and Wisconsin today, bringing soaking rains and frequent lightning to the La Crosse, Wis., area. Several anglers suspended their fishing and took shelter during the worst parts for 30 minutes or more. The rain relented around mid-afternoon and skies cleared in time for weigh-in, but more rain could be on the way overnight Friday into Saturday. The forecast for day 3 is calling for partly cloudy skies with a 15- to 25-mph northwest wind that could ramp up the current flow even more.

The Top 12 after Saturday will compete on Sunday, when the winner will be determined by highest cumulative weight.

DeFoe Powered Through Storm

> Day 2: 5, 17-11 (10, 35-02)

Despite finding himself in the lead, DeFoe said today was largely a grind after catching a small limit early on that included a couple 3-pounders. He fished through the worst of the storm and at one point had a notion to check in early. It was a good thing he didn’t because once the rain let up, he made a slight adjustment and it resulted in another 3-pounder and then the 6-pound kicker.

“Between conditions being so miserable and fish not cooperating for a large part of the day, it was pretty tough,” he said. “I told my cameraman that I always get the last flight on the days that (stink) weather-wise. Those days where you’re ready for it be over with and go in? You can bank on me being in the last flight. I considered going in early – the thought vaguely crossed my mind. I figured I had enough to get a check. I just wanted to be done with it.”

Around 1:30, he finally ate a sandwich and regrouped mentally.

“The weather finally broke at 2:30 and the sun popped out pretty quick,” he added. “I decided to go back to where I started. I caught a couple and missed a couple, then I caught a 3-pounder. About five or 10 casts later, I caught ol’ big.”

He’s not concerned about the impact rising water could have on the places he’s fishing. He also doesn’t feel that he’ll be able to maintain his 70-pound pace.

“Absolutely not,” he said. “Fifteen is definitely possible. I would’ve not been close to that without that big one today. I didn’t feel like I burned anything up yesterday. Today, it started okay, then it died off again. I figured it may have run it’s course. I made a slight adjustment to how I was fishing and that made a big difference. That was right before I caught those last two.”

2nd: Lee On Good Quality

> Day 2: 5, 16-02 (10, 33-04)

Lee wasn’t sure what to expect coming into this tournament. He’d located some areas that seemed to have a few fish in them in practice, but it wasn’t until Thursday that he discovered that those fish were the kind he would need to have during the event.

Jordan Lee had pinpointed a couple areas that are holding better than average fish.

“One bite in practice has turned into 2nd place is basically what happened,” he said. “I was telling a friend the other day we cover as much water in practice as we can and then we analyze it and see where the boats are at and the areas that are pressured or areas that are community places and then places you don’t get bit. I’ve narrowed it down.

“Today, I knew where there were some fish biting and they’re solid fish. They’re not just 14-inchers. There’s a lot of 2 1/2s with the occasional 3 or 4. It’s just crazy to me how much water they’re not in here.”

He decided to take shelter for roughly 45 minutes this morning during the height of the storm. He had a limit for 12 pounds at the time, but on his first cast after getting back on the water, he caught a 4-04.

He’s hoping more of that caliber is there on Saturday.

“I think there’ll be more of them for sure,” he said. “I don’t know how many more and I’m not sure if it can go the distance. I’ve been practicing and looking for other places I can go.”

3rd: Smallmouth Fest for Feider

> Day 2: 5, 19-05 (10, 32-06)

When Feider was on stage Thursday, he said cloudy, rainy conditions would be a key so he could go target smallmouth. He knew he needed a big stringer to keep his glimmering hopes of qualifying for next week’s AOY event at Mille Lacs. He couldn’t have asked for a better scenario than what played out Friday.

“It was pretty cool,” he said. “That’s what I needed. I’m kind of worried about the next 2 days. I definitely will have to capitalize in the morning and I’ll be alright. If it rains the next 2 days, I guarantee I’ll win it, but that ain’t going to happen.”

The conditions today allowed him to target smallmouth in extremely shallow water with a swimjig. The low visibility makes them easier to target. He was able to catch fish on multiple spots throughout the day.

“If it’s cloudy, it’s all day,” he said. “If it’s sunny, I have about an hour and then it’s done.”

He sorted through more than 50 fish, the bulk of which were non-keepers. He opted to stay out and fish through the thunderstorm.

“They were biting all day,” he said. “I really had five good bites and lost one. I caught a handful of 2 1/2- to 2 3/4-pounders. I caught one largemouth, but I’m not sure what he was doing there. He must’ve been lost.”

Mathematically, he’s still a longshot to make the AOY championship, but that won’t stop him from going all out.

Seth Feider's 19-pound stringer today was all smallmouth.

“I feel more comfortable here than in all the rest of them,” he said. “Now it’s a single tournament you try to win. It feels like a stand-alone tournament to me. I want to make it to Mille Lacs, but I’m not worried about the points. I want to win this thing, but I need to make Sunday to have a chance.”

4th: Evers Missed Some

> Day 2: 5, 13-15 (10, 30-12)

Evers said the storm system didn’t seem to affect the fish where he was at. He was just perturbed that he didn’t catch a bigger stringer.

“I’m a little disappointed that I didn’t have more than I did,” he said.

He attributed that to poor execution on his part and a few missed bites. He went back through areas he’d fished Thursday and plans to go back to those spots against tomorrow.

“They bit all day for me, during the rain and otherwise,” he said. “I think there’s enough in there to do what I need to do.”

He said he’s narrowed his arsenal down to three or four baits, but today’s conditions dictated a change in offerings from what worked on Thursday.

5th: Early Morning Key for Jones

> Day 1: 5, 15-12 (10, 30-07)

Jones has spent the first 2 days taking a conservative approach on what he considered his back-up spot after his preferred area from practice was unfishable on Thursday and again today.

“When I went to my A spot from practice yesterday, it was blown out,” he said. “When I realized that, I panicked. I had one other spot that had some merit and when I went there, I had my weight within 12 casts. Today, it took me about 20 casts. It’s better now than in practice.”

After his early flurry, he rode out part of the storm tucked away under a bridge alongside fellow Texan Kelly Jordon.

“That was a stormy day,” he said. “It’s been a while since I fishied through a day like that. Lightning and I don’t get along.”

Having not leaned on his spot for an extended period of time so far, Jones is curious to see what it’ll produce on the weekend.

“With today’s rain, it could be blown out and muddy tomorrow,” he said. “I’ve caught 15 fish there in 2 days, so maybe there were just 15 there and they were real aggressive, but it feels like a spot that’s reloading. My first five today were bigger than my first five yesterday.

“I’m in a vast area, but there’s one little sweet spot and I think the conditions have pushed the fish to that sweet spot.”

6th: Mullins Dialed In On Two Spots

> Day 2: 5, 15-11 (10, 30-07)

David Mullins has focused mostly on two small areas so far and he’s hoping there’s enough fish in them tomorrow to possibly carry him to a berth in the Top 12.

“I’ve been fortunate,” he said. “I didn’t know I was around that many fish, but it’s just worked out. I just have two little areas. I’m not sure if they replenish. I might zero tomorrow. I’ve lost some fish, too, that probably would’ve given me another pound each day.”

It’s been largely a frog bite for Mullins, who had his limit by 9 a.m. today and was culling by 10.

“They bit just the same for me (as yesterday),” he said. “I didn’t have to adjust anything. They might’ve bit better because there might be more current on those places.

“I have nothing else to go to. I quit fishing one area after I caught two 2 1/2s that didn’t help me. I’m going to hammer those places tomorrow and catch what I can.”

94th: Niggemeyer’s Areas Blown Out

> Day 2: 1, 2-02 (6, 15-10)

The straight-line winds that accompanied today’s vicious storm did a number on the area James Niggemeyer had been fishing and it snuffed any hope he had of continuing his rally toward qualifying for the AOY championship next week.

Niggemeyer had moved up 11 spots to 53rd in the AOY points after catching 13-08 on Thursday, but he couldn’t get anything going where he and Brandon Card had caught their better fish on day 1.

“It was very frustrating to have a day like this,” he said. “I was thinking I could make some points up and make it to Mille Lacs. Today was a pretty catastrophic day, but that’s the game we play. If you think you’re going to get through this without a day like this, you’re wrong.”

He had been in the same area as Card on Thursday and Card was in 5th following day 1.

“I didn’t see him catch a single one where we were,” Niggemeyer said.

He said the wind that accompanied the front showed little mercy for the area he was trying to fish.

“I had backup stuff where I had a frog deal,” he said. “I hit that Thursday and caught two that wouldn’t have helped me. I ran over there and had two blowups and never had another bite.”
