Justin Lucas is having one of those “pinch me” tournaments so far at the Potomac River, as in pinch me because I never expected things to play out like they have so far.

Things continue to line up in near-perfect succession for the Alabama pro, who had another stellar day of fishing not all that far from Washington, D.C.

Lucas was the only competitor to break the 20-pound mark on Thursday and he nearly did it again today with a day-best 19-14 stringer that has him almost 6 pounds clear of his closest challenger (he had a lead of 2-07 after day 1).

“I should’ve had more weight today, but they kept spitting up bluegills and white perch today,” he said. “I think 20 1/2 was possible, but I didn’t expect that again. I always go into every day not knowing what it’ll be like.”

Through 2 days, he has a pretty good idea of what to expect now as he looks to claim his second Elite Series win.

Brent Ehrler held onto the No. 2 spot with a 16-07 stringer that gave him 34-04 at the halfway point. Jacob Powroznik used a 16-12 sack to move up three positions to 3rd with 32-12.

Jason Christie caught all of his weight during a brief flurry and the 15-06 was enough to keep him in 4th with 31-07. Bill Lowen held onto 5th with a 14-06 effort to push his total to 31-03.

Here's a look at the Top 12 following day 2 of competition, with deficit margin from Lucas indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Justin Lucas: 40-02
2. Brent Ehrler: 34-04 (5-14)
3. Jacob Powroznik: 32-12 (7-06)
4. Jason Christie: 31-07 (8-11)
5. Bill Lowen: 31-03 (8-15)
6. Gerald Swindle: 30-05 (9-13)
7. Skeet Reese: 30-02 (10-00)
8. Luke Clausen: 30-02 (10-00)
9. Andy Montgomery: 30-02 (10-00)
10. Jordan Lee: 30-00 (10-02)
11. Koby Kreiger: 30-00 (10-02)
12. Keith Combs: 28-05 (11-13)

There hasn’t been a whole lot of movement in the race for Angler of the Year because the Top 5 contenders remained scattered among the Top 15 through 2 days at the Potomac. Only Powroznik has been able to gain any ground (3 points) on leader Gerald Swindle.

Jared Lintner mounted a massive rally today, catching 19-09 to move up to 46th – a 57-spot improvement – after a miserable day 1 that saw him weigh one fish for 2-01. Chad Morgenthaler made a 39-spot jump to 39th thanks to a 15-01 stringer today while Drew Benton climbed 36 positions to 45th with a 14-09 bag.

Paul Mueller dropped from 15th to 52nd after bagging a limit for 5-09. Mike Iaconelli caught just three fish today for 3-12 and tumbled from 8th to 53rd, snapping his streak of four straight finishes in the money.

With the low tide period an hour later today than it was Thursday, some competitors were able to capitalize on how fish were positioned during that time for longer today, most notably Lucas and Ehrler, who both caught the lion’s share of their weight before 9 a.m.

Limits are not easy to come by – six fewer anglers brought five to the scale than on Thursday – and timing and location will continue to be crucial elements as the event hits the weekend with more stifling heat in the forecast.

The Top 12 after Saturday’s round will advance to Sunday, when the winner will be determined by highest cumulative weight.

Lucas on a ‘Special’ Area

> Day 2: 5, 19-14 (10, 40-02)

Lucas says the first couple days have felt a little bit like the final day of the Sacramento River Elite Series last year, when he closed out his win by targeting some old wooden piers on the final day.

“It’s pretty cool, honestly,” he said. “It’s like a little deja vu from the Delta 2 days in a row.”

His main area has all the key components a tournament angler looks for – quality fish, baitfish, hard cover and grass and moving water. What’s more is Lucas is fairly certain new fish filter in and out of the area with the tide rising and falling.

“It’s really a special area and I’m blown away that I have it to myself,” he said. “That’s making the difference. It’s maybe the best place I’ve ever found in my whole life with the fish being there and the timing of the tournament. That just doesn’t happen all the time, if ever at all. I can’t draw it up any better.”

He had his limit by 9 this morning and then shifted to conserve-and-protect mode. He started to experiment with a swimjig and caught a few upgrades, including a 5-08 kicker. It’s the second day in a row he’s caught a 5 1/2-pounder or bigger to anchor his stringer.

Brent Ehrler held onto the No. 2 spot in the standings behind Lucas.

His goal for Saturday is to catch 16 pounds – only seven other anglers managed that today.

“That’s my target weight,” he said. “Once I catch that, I might feel it out. Based on how easily that comes, if I need to fish harder and longer, I will. Tomorrow’s a new day. I’m going to take every ounce of a lead I can get on these guys and hope to not give any of it back.”

2nd: Early Flurry for Ehrler

> Day 2: 5, 16-07 (10, 34-04)

As encouraged as Ehrler is about catching another good bag of fish that has him near the top of the leaderboard, he was disappointed that beyond a small morning window, he didn’t accomplish or learn a whole lot today.

“I caught ‘em early, but then struggled the rest of the day,” he said. “It was pretty tough. It was a grind this afternoon. I’m bummed about not catching them this afternoon. I was a little off on my rotation in a couple areas.

The only thing I’m disappointed in is I wasn’t able to expand much. I didn’t learn much this afternoon.”

After not faring well at the Potomac in previous tournaments, he’s thrilled to be contention for his first Elite Series win.

“I’m ecstatic,” he added. “I just want to catch them 1 more day and make the 12-cut. I don’t care what happens after that.”

All of the fish he’s caught have been related to grass, much like most of the other competitors.

“I have one or two little key areas where I’m catching a few,” he said.

3rd: Powroznik Waiting For Best Areas To Clear Up

> Day 2: 5, 16-03 (10, 32-12)

Powroznik has moved into the Top 3 without getting a shot at some key areas he wanted to fish because the wind had made the water a little murky.

“I’m pretty stoked about it right now,” he said. “We still have 2 days of fishing left so anything can happen. I’m off to a good start – that’s all I can wish for.”

He hasn’t given up hope yet that he’ll be able to fish the areas he had high hopes for.

“One tide change and all that could change,” he said. “I had some decent fish in practice in those areas, but I haven’t gotten to fish those yet. There are a lot of boats fishing in the places that are good, but now that we’re down to 50 it will spread people out.

Jacob Powroznik made a move into the top 3 and his biding his time before he fishes some key areas.

“I know how to catch them, so if you get a day when you can go through there and really pick it apart, it can be really good.”

4th: Christie Made Right Move

> Day 2: 5, 15-06 (10, 31-07)

For about 7 hours, 50 minutes today, Christie wanted to be somewhere else other than the Potomac River. He spent the other 10 minutes catching the fish that kept him in the Top 5 for the second straight day.

“I don’t know what to say,” Christie said. “I went to the main spot where I’d caught some yesterday and there were a lot of people in the area. I decided I’d stay and out-wait them. Finally, after a couple hours, I said, ‘I’ve been here too many times. This ain’t gonna work.’

“I started running around and still had a good tide and I pulled into a spot and went from 0 to 15 (pounds) in less than 10 minutes.”

From there, he had hopes of upgrading, but didn’t get another bite the rest of the day.

“That’s the thing about here – I don’t know how to target a big one or fish for a 4-pounder,” he said. “You just hope to run into one.”

It left him scratching his head and made him realize how crucial timing is on the Potomac.

“I know there have been people where I caught my fish today,” he said. “The only thing I’ve learned is you have to be at the right spot at the right time or you won’t catch them. You have to be around a lot of fish at the perfect time to catch five or six.

“It’s so easy to suck out here. Lucas might be making us look stupid, but it’s not like you can pull up anywhere and catch one.”

5th: Same Plan for Lowen

> Day 2: 5, 14-06 (10, 31-03)

Lowen called it a day 15 minutes early today amid the heat and humidity.

“I’d had enough,” he said.

There wasn’t much else he could do after combing through the same creek he fished on Thursday and tallying 12 keepers.

“It was the same deal as Thursday,” he said. “I caught a limit pretty quick and caught pretty much everything I weighed in there.”

He did catch an upgrade worth 8 ounces elsewhere this afternoon and lost another good fish in a mat. He says he’ll start in the same creek again Saturday with hopes that he hasn’t put a dent in the fish population there. His biggest fish today was a 3-06.

“I don’t know what’s it got left,” he said. “It’s hard to say because they bit better today than Thursday. I might not get another bite tomorrow, but up until now it’s worked out pretty good.

“I’m hoping to catch another 14 pounds and make the 12-cut. I’d be thrilled with that because after practice I was afraid I wouldn’t make the 50-cut.”

Gerald Swindle says his confidence is growing now after opting to slow down on day 1.

6th: Swindle Gaining Confidence

> Day 2: 5, 14-00 (10, 30-05)

Swindle has tried to narrow his focus this week to what’s in front of him on the water. So far, he’s done a good job of that and, in turn, held serve in the AOY chase for now.

“I tried not to focus on any of that,” he said. “I tried to focus on trying to beat the Potomac River. That keeps me looking at things through a straw instead of everything around me.”

After struggling early Thursday, he scratched out 16 1/2 pounds and after another 14 pounds today, his confidence is starting to grow.

“On day 1, there was a lot on the line and I was struggling a bit,” he said. “I couldn’t get bit. I’m like a kid when it comes to fishing – I like to catch them, I like to get bites and I like to understand it. Thursday was the biggest mental battle I’d ever been up against. Somehow, miraculously, I pulled out 16 1/2 pounds just staying focused and fishing slow.

“The hardest thing you can ever do is fish slow when you’re not on ‘em. Doing that yesterday gave me the confidence to go back out today and just remain calm and stay slow and try to get five bites.”

He fished through three areas and flipped a Zoom Z Craw under a 1 1/2-ounce weight and mixed in a Pop-R. He said the tide doesn’t have a big impact where he’s at, but he prefers the outgoing portion. As long there’s some current moving, he said the fish get active.

“I’ve put 2 days together and I’m starting to build more confidence,” he said. “Even though I might not understand exactly where all the fish are at, I’m starting to get that confidence if you just fish 9 hours I’m going to get a few bites.

“That, to me, is the key because then you can relax and just get in the moment. If you find yourself with the trolling motor on 6 and burning through everything here, I don’t think it’s any good. When you’re not catching them, slowing down is tough.”

46th: Lintner Went Punching

> Day 2: 5, 19-09 (6, 21-10)

Lintner got stung by a bee Thursday night in the cabin he’s sharing with Jeff Kriet. Lintner got his revenge on the bee – click here for the video – and got his revenge on the Potomac River on Friday.

After mustering just two bites Thursday, he called an audible and caught nearly 20 pounds with a punching rod today.

“I knew better, but in practice I was getting bit on a buzzbait and ChatterBait just covering a lot of water,” he said. “It was overcast and drizzly and the ones that were biting me were good fish on the buzzbait. I figured if I just covered a lot of water I’d get some bites.”

Thursday yielded only two bass bites and he weighed in one of them.

He returned to the same areas today, but by 11 a.m., he still hadn’t caught a keeper and his frustration was growing.

“I pulled out a punching rod because that’s how I love to fish,” he said. “At 11:30, I got my first bite and by noon, I was culling.

“It makes me feel like an idiot. If I’d have done that in that area Thursday, I might’ve busted ‘em.”

Thinking he had no realistic chance at making the cut, he stayed in the area and caught several more fish in the 3-pound range that didn’t help him. Those fish could’ve helped him tomorrow, though.

“I’m still kind of in shock that I made it,” he said. “As many years as I’ve fished these types of places and knowing it’d been hot and humid, then drizzly and cloudy. They went to biting a buzzbait and I should’ve known better that when sun came out to slow down.”

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 107 anglers, 63 limits (6 fewer than yesterday), 10 fours, 18 threes, 5 twos, 8 ones, 3 zeroes (1 fewer than yesterday).

> Randy Howell got hung up in a small creek this afternoon and wound up checking in 9 minutes late, which resulted in a 9-pound penalty. His 10-14 stringer (four fish) was reduced to 1-14. Howell finished 102nd.

> Kevin VanDam bounced back from a zero on day 1 to catch 8-03 and finish 99th, his second result of 90th or worse this year and lowest Elite Series finish since Santee Cooper (103rd) in 2006.

“I had a game plan that I thought I might be able to make something special happen,” he said on stage, “but timing is everything here. I went to my best spot from practice yesterday and it was full of catfish. From there, I was always a step behind and every opportunity I had, I blew it. It was just one of those days that was a train wreck from the start.”
