Jordan Lee weighed in 19-01 worth of smallmouth on Thursday and found himself in 22nd place at Cayuga Lake, which churned out some impressive day-1 stringers for the Elite Series field.

Today, his focus eventually shifted to largemouth (he weighed three of them) and it resulted in him rocketing into the lead. Thanks to a day-best 21-07, Lee has 40-08 at the midway point of an event that is sure to come down to ounces. The second-year pro from Alabama said he never expected to be on top of the leaderboard entering the weekend.

“I’m very surprised,” Lee said under a clear, blue sky in Union Springs, N.Y.

While Lee didn’t reveal if he caught any of his fish today sight-fishing, Jacob Powroznik saw every one he weighed and the Virginian used an 18-05 stringer to move up one spot to 2nd with 40-03.

Morizo Shimizu, the day-1 leader, managed 16-10 and maintains his two areas should continue to produce despite his dropping to 3rd with 40-00.

Drew Benton, another angler who excels when sight-fishing is an option, bagged 19-03 to move into 4th with 39-08. He’s an ounce ahead of Dean Rojas, who also saw every fish he weighed in totaling 18-14, which is good for 5th.

Here's a look at the Top 12 after the first day of competition, with deficit margin from Lee indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Jordan Lee: 40-08
2. Jacob Powroznik: 40-03 (0-05)
3. Morizo Shimizu: 40-00 (0-08)
4. Drew Benton: 39-08 (1-00)
5. Dean Rojas: 39-07 (1-01)
6. Kevin VanDam: 38-15 (1-09)
7. Paul Mueller: 38-04 (2-04)
8. Mike Iaconelli: 37-15 (2-09)
9. Seth Feider: 37-15 (2-09)
10. Ott DeFoe: 37-05 (3-03)
11. Dave Lefebre: 36-15 (3-09)
12. Brett Hite: 36-13 (3-11)

Greg Hackney, whose day-1 disqualification overshadowed an otherwise banner day of fishing and threw a dramatic twist into his pursuit of the Angler of the Year title, caught 15-07 today and finished last (107th) to earn 4 points. He’s now 4th in AOY points, 62 points behind new leader Gerald Swindle.

When approached after coming off stage, Hackney declined to comment about Thursday’s DQ.

“Not yet, but soon,” he said as he headed to his truck.

Swindle caught 19-10 and moved up from 44th to 15th with 36-10.

Brett Hite made a 54-spot surge today with a 21-03 stringer that carried him to 12th with 36-13. Several anglers, who were well inside the top 50 after day 1, struggled today and fell out of check range. Among them was Chad Morgenthaler (15th to 61st), Andy Montgomery (21st to 73rd) and Ish Monroe, who dropped from 24th to 53rd.

The weights leveled off a bit Friday – just three 20-pound stringers were caught versus 12 on Thursday – but two distinct themes have started to emerge. Those anglers who continue to capitalize on fish they’re visually targeting in shallow water and intermediate depths are holding their own against those who are casting and flipping in areas where largemouth are relating to grass and smallmouth are relating to hard cover.

Another round of abundant sunshine is in store for Saturday, which may favor those who are looking at their fish. The field will be reduced to the top 12 after Saturday's round and a winner will be crowned Sunday based on highest cumulative weight. Also, the top 8 finishers this week will secure a spot in the Classic Bracket tournament, slated for July 18-22 at the Niagara River in Buffalo, N.Y.

Lee says he'll mainly focus on an area holding largemouth on Saturday.

Lee Will Focus on Largemouth

> Day 2: 5, 21-07 (10, 40-08)

Lee started today hoping to pick up where his day-1 smallmouth pattern left off. He caught a couple fish, but got a sense it wasn’t going to be as productive as it was Thursday.

With a high sky and bright sun, he was able to pick over areas with grass and that’s where he located some quality largemouth.

“I had a couple bites in one area in practice when it was cloudy and windy and you couldn’t really see the grass,” he said. “I could see a lot better today.”

He went back through that small area around 10 a.m. and came out with three chunky largemouth, including two in the 4 1/2- to 5-pound range.

“It happened in like 20 minutes – bam, bam, bam,” he noted.

He continued to seek out smallmouth, but came up empty. His bag included three largemouth and two smallies, but he plans to focus solely on largemouth Saturday even though he doesn’t think he can pattern them at other areas around the lake.

“I know exactly where they’re going to be,” he said. “They’re not on one spot, but it’s a big area.”

2nd: Powroznik’s Sure More Are Coming

> Day 2: 5, 18-05 (10, 40-03)

Powroznik followed the same game plan that worked for him Thursday and he sees no reason to change at this point.

“I got off to a good start with a couple good ones,” he said. “They were just there. I was going to one and found another. I think good things are coming. The weather is supposed to get hot and I think it’s going to make it better. I think they’re going to bite a little better for what I’m doing. I’ll be able to see them.”

He said the depth range he’s targeting might be the key to why he’s catching bigger fish.

“Everybody else is up there fishing in 4 feet of water,” he noted. “I’m out there in 8 or 9 where it’s harder to see, but the fish are a little bit bigger. I’m only fishing for five a day. All of it is sight-fishing.”

He’ll let the conditions dictate his first move in the morning, but if it’s slick and calm, he’ll go back to where he’d located more fish in their spawning mode. He had four largemouth and one smallmouth in today’s bag.

“I’m just fishing right where it breaks off (in 7 or 8 feet),” he said. “The big ones are spawning right where it breaks off. I know where to go fish if I have to. I’d rather go look at what I know is a 4-pounder rather than try to fish for them. You know how it is when fish come off the bed – they don’t exactly want to go to biting.”

He said the spawning largemouth at Cayuga are taking a little more time than expected to bite when he locates one. He said he spent as long as an hour and 20 minutes on one fish today, a 3 3/4-pounder that he eventually caught.

“What I’ve learned is people are going by the ones they don’t think they can catch,” he said. “You have to sit there and spend some time on them. I was either going to catch it or leave and go to weigh-in.”

3rd: No Big Ones For Shimizu

> Day 2: 5, 16-10 (10, 40-00)

Just about everything was the same today for Shimizu. The only exception – he didn’t catch a 6-pounder like he did Thursday.

“Same areas, same fishing styles,” he said in his customary broken English.

He said he caught more fish today (about 20) while targeting the same two areas – a small point and a larger area with grass on it. Both spots have produced good fish regardless of time of day. He weighed in all largemouth today.

“Yesterday, not too many people, but today more boats around,” he added.

Still, he plans to go back to those spots Saturday after some fish he’d planned on sight-fishing for either left or were caught.

Jacob Powroznik is confident the area he's in will have fish continuing to filter through it.

4th: More Looking for Benton

> Day 2: 5, 19-03 (10, 39-08)

When Benton starting formulating his plan for how he’d tackle Cayuga Lake, he figured it’d be mostly a grass-based event. Never did he expect it tp fall right into his wheelhouse as a sight-fishing derby.

“I expected it to be a grass-fishing deal, period,” he said. “Maybe there’d be a couple on beds, but not like it’s been.”

He wouldn’t change a thing after all of his fish (three largemouth and two smallmouth) again came sight-fishing. He picked off the fish he’d found later in day Thursday early today and then moved on to new water by 11 a.m. He has a few more located that he’ll target tomorrow morning.

“I have a bunch, but they’re just not the right size,” he said. “I have a few that might be 3-ish. I’m going to try to catch those right away. That’s what I did this morning. I caught a couple 3s and went looking the rest of the day.”

He opted to focus on parts of the lake where the water is cooler on average because he believes the fish in those locations are still in their spawning routine.

“I think there are fish still coming in in those areas,” he said. “Up north, it’s going away. I went further south and found cooler water. I did have a couple bites on the north end, but I’m pretty sure everybody’s catching them up there so I’m going to stay out of that.”

5th: All Smallies for Rojas

> Day 2: 5, 18-14 (10, 39-07)

It was another day of sight-fishing for Rojas, who’s among the best in the sport at it. They didn’t come as quickly or as easily as they did Thursday and he’s not sure what he’ll catch tomorrow if he remains committed to that style, but he’s happy where he’s at.

“The fish are just running out,” he said. “Even though there are a lot of fish in this lake, the big ones are getting caught.”

He caught his biggest fish right away today, then added another one an hour later.

“I had to move around quite a bit,” he added. “It’s hard with so many boats out there. Everything got covered up. I had to keep moving. I found a spot and caught three more, then just went hunting.”

He spent the last two hours largemouth fishing in an attempt to formulate a backup plan for Saturday in the event the smallmouth he’s been catching dry up.

“It’s going to be interesting,” he said. “I know what I’m going to do, but I’m not certain of the weight I can catch (tomorrow).”

6th: VanDam Has Options

> Day 2: 5, 18-15 (10, 38-15)

Kevin VanDam likes how the conditions are shaping up for the weekend at Cayuga.

“The weather is working to where we can really fish good,” he said.

That can be a good thing, but he has multiple things to pick from and the challenge now is narrowing his options. He’s been catching both largemouth and smallmouth, but is convinced largemouth will ultimately prevail.

“I have several different options as far as patterns that are producing quality fish,” he said. “That’s the thing – I’m trying to figure out what to spend my time on.

“I’ve learned a little more each day just about timing and what to do when. I was hoping for a little better day, but I had a good day so I can’t complain.”

Morizo Shimizu caught more fish today than he did Thursday, but didn't catch any big ones.

12th: Hite Triggered Big Ones

> Day 2: 5, 21-03 (10, 36-13)

Hite targeted the same area as he did Thursday, but he was able to hone in more on how the fish were setting up today and it resulted in a dramatic jump up the standings.

“I found these fish the last day of practice and when I was reeling one in a big school of them came up,” he said. “They were pretty decent size. On Thursday, I found the spot within the spot. I was reeling one in and a 5- or 6-pounder was on its tail.”

His problem on day 1 was he could never get the bigger fish to commit to his bait. Today, they did.

“I make another cast and am reeling in another 2-pounder and there’s like 20 3- to 6-pounders on its tail,” he added. “I was shaking, literally. I made 10 casts in a row and caught 10 2 1/2-pounders. I never could get the big ones to bite.

“I dialed in that spot today. I figured out what’s going on there and figured out the baits. By 10:30, I had my weight. When you’re throwing back 3 3/4-pounders, I figured I’d better leave it.”

He weighed in all largemouth and senses there are more post-spawners coming to where he’s been fishing.

15th: Swindle Slowed Down

> Day 2: 5, 19-10 (10, 36-10)

Coming into day 1, Swindle figured a 15-pound bag would put him on his way to cashing a check. He was sorely mistaken and he had to pick up the pace Friday. He did just that – by slowing down.

“On Thursday, I caught 15 pounds in the first 50 minutes and I didn’t have that great of a practice so for me I thought I’d covered the line with 15 pounds to get a check,” he said. “I figured I’d use the rest of the day to run docks. I only had a couple bites doing that, but they were all big. I grinded it out the rest of the day and never caught a big one. I burned a lot of my day up.”

He transitioned to a grassy area of the lake and hunkered down today.

“I made a different commitment to stay in the grass and fish and fish,” he added. “I fished slow and easy and didn’t get in a hurry. I go back to something I’ve referenced all year – I’m just trying to fish smaller areas and make sure I fish them thoroughly.”

His bag today was all similar 3 3/4-pounders.

“The only thing I did different was slow down in a couple areas. I threw a weightless worm and 6-pound line with a dropshot. I’m not going to catch a lot of fish, but I have to catch every one that’s there.”

44th: Myers Went Too Fast

> Day 2: 5, 12-07 (10, 33-10)

Britt Myers fell out of the top 5 and nearly out of the top 50 today, but he thinks the area he’s in has the potential to push him back up the leaderboard Saturday.

“I had a great starting spot that was all bass yesterday and today it was all pickerel,” he said. “Every cast, they were all giant pickerel. The bass were still there, but the pickerel screwed it up.”

He also had to adjust to additional fishing pressure in the area.

“I had a big area to myself with several waypoints that were key,” he added. “Today, I had four or five boats that came in there. I’m not making excuses, but it got in my head and I fished fast.

“When you get a good bag to start, you fish really good the rest of the day and I just never really got that going.”
