Kentucky Lake was more foe than friend to the majority of the FLW Tour field on Friday.

Conditions were slick and calm and the fishing pressure, coupled with little current flow, saw some of the day-1 patterns dissolve by mid-morning.

That didn’t stop Paducah, Ky., native and veteran Tour angler Terry Bolton from capitalizing on his extensive knowledge of the lake. Bolton bagged 22-12 today, all coming off ledges, and moved up eight spots to take the lead with 44-13 at the event’s midway point.

He’ll carry a 2-pound advantage into the weekend over another local, Jason Lambert, who caught a tournament-best 24-04. Bryan Thrift caught a second straight 20-plus pound bag and has 42-06 in 3rd.

Brandon Hunter, another Kentucky resident, held onto 4th with 41-14 while Andy Morgan moved into the Top 5 with a 23-03 stringer that gave him 39-14.

Here’s a quick look at the Top 10 following day 2:

1. Terry Bolton: 44-13
2. Jason Lambert: 42-13
3. Bryan Thrift: 42-06
4. Brandon Hunter: 41-14
5. Andy Morgan: 39-14
6. Todd Hollowell: 38-10
7. Brad Knight: 38-06
8. Mark Rose: 38-02
9. Jacob Wheeler: 37-02
10. Scott Canterbury: 36-09

It was a topsy-turvy day on the massive TVA lake. Many anglers noted that the big pods of fish they pounded on yesterday had been busted up and there weren’t many new arrivals to target. Several anglers who had strong efforts Thursday caught limits of keepers and little else today.

Day-1 leader Brad Knight slipped to 7th after catching 15-00 today while Jim Jones advanced 72 places to 11th behind a 23-04 stringer that gave him 36-06.

The forecast for Saturday is for the hot weather to continue. The mercury will climb into the upper 90s with a west-southwest breeze of 5 to 10 mph. The field will be reduced to the Top 10 for Sunday, when the winner will be determined by highest cumulative weight.

Bolton and his co-angler work on landing one of Bolton's keepers today.

Bolton Surges Forward

> Day 2: 5, 22-12 (10, 44-13)

It’s no secret that Bolton is right in his wheelhouse, regardless of how fussy and uncooperative the fish are being.

“I saved a place for today in case I got struggling and I jumped off a fish over 5 pounds,” he said. “I was struggling. I went to the place and I caught a 4 1/2 and a 3 3/4. I had 17 pounds or so and enough to make the cut.”

He moved around some to assess which areas still held fish and whether any new fish had moved out or moved on.

“I found a lot was gone,” he added. “I finally kind of figured out what was going on and went back looking in an area that I had started in and caught a 5 1/2 and culled two in the last few minutes.”

He’s not anticipating many changes in terms of conditions for Saturday.

“I’m expecting tomorrow to be a very similar day to today and since it's the weekend they probably won’t pull any current,” he said. “There’ll be a higher volume of boat traffic, it’ll be hot and sunny and I really expect the same conditions as we had today.”

He said he’s starting to dial in his game plan and narrow his search area heading into the weekend. His biggest fish was a 5 1/2-pounder.

Jason Lambert closed out the day with a pair of 4-pounders that got him over the 24-pound mark.

2nd: Lambert In A Groove

> Day 2: 5, 24-04 (10, 42-13)

Being quite familiar with Kentucky Lake, Lambert expected to bring in another decent bag Friday.

“I thought I could catch 20 to 22 pounds,” he said. “I lost a fish that hurt me yesterday. I was real fortunate to have as much as I had today.”

His success came with some added fishing time as he was in a later flight today.

“I caught them real fast in the morning,” he added. “I caught 19 pounds real quick with a 2-pounder in the box. At 1:30, I had 22 1/2 pounds and right at the end of the day I caught a pair of 4-pounders that helped me cull about 1 1/2 to 2 pounds.

“I had them pretty good all day today. It loosens you up just a little so that you can fish a little better.”

His bag was anchored with a 5.08 and the smallest was a 4.34.

Lambert did note he is fishing smaller schools, but they seem to be better quality fish.

3rd: Thrift Fighting Hard

> Day 2: 5, 20-01 (10, 42-06)

Day 2 took no mercy on Thrift, but he didn’t quit. By 10:30 in the morning, he was in full panic mode and scrambling.

“It was so bad I was fishing the bank at 2:30 hoping to catch a keeper off a boat dock,” he said. “It was a long, frustrating day. I didn’t catch a limit until 3 o’clock or shortly after. I found a fairly big school late in the day.”

With time running out, Thrift and Bolton found themselves fishing a similar place where Bolton passed on a tip that enabled Thrift to land two keepers and settle down.

Bryan Thrift struggled today, but still finds himself in contention.

He idled around a little and found another school that enabled him to put together most of his weight. He caught 10 fish between 4:15 and 4:30 p.m. before rushing to check-in.

His biggest of the day was a 6-pounder; his smallest was a 3.

4th: Hunter Feeling Comfortable

> Day 2: 5, 19-03 (10, 41-14)

Despite his weight dropping off by 3 1/2 pounds, Hunter is thrilled to maintain his place among the Top 5. He’s hoping his experience on the lake will pay off as the weekend grinds on.

Through 2 days, he’s found the fishing to be uncharacteristic of what Kentucky Lake is capable of.

“I only have a couple places where I could actually get them fired up and catch them really good,” he said. “A lot of the places I was running I could see them down there and couldn’t catch them.”

He does have an area that he’s been fishing that he doesn’t believe is affected by current.

Despite a slow start with only 14 pounds by mid-morning, he bounced around and got another school to fire up late in the day. He culled three times, but lost a couple good ones on a crankbait.

“I’ve been catching them on that crankbait and when you catch them real quick, you don’t have the time to get the hooks out of that net so I was cutting just little pieces at a time,” he said. “I got on that flurry and I caught two nice fish and lost two good ones. I got one about 4 pounds that my partner netted … and I watched that crankbait slide off as the fish came into the net. I had no idea there was a hole as big as a pop can and that fish went right through and back into the water. I had no clue there as a hole big enough for a fish to slide out of. That was just stupid.”

He benefitted from the late-afternoon current flow. A spot he’d marked fish in the morning but had nothing to show for produced a flurry of activity later in the afternoon. His key baits so far have been a custom-painted crankbait, a jumbo spoon, a swimbait and a finesse jig. Some of the cranks have the paint worn off and that tells him color could be a part of the equation moving forward, an oddity at Kentucky Lake when bass are hungry.

Hunter is only catching 10 fish a day, his biggest being 5 pounds, but his co-anglers have brought in 18 to 19 pounds of fish each day. He knows he is on the right quality.

5th: No Surprises for Morgan

> Day 2: 5, 23-03 (10, 39-14)

Nothing much caught Morgan by surprise by the time day 2 had ended. In fact, he pretty much called how it was going to go.

“It wasn’t that bad,” he said. “I caught a lot of non-keeper fish, but fishing was just like it was on day 1. I just caught a 7-pounder today.”

Morgan lives not far from the headwaters of the TVA and is well aware of the lay of the land.

“On the east end of the Tennessee River where this thing forms, we’ve had no rain so there’s no flow, there’s not water to put in there,” he explained. “They’re just running a few turbines a day, which doesn't pull Kentucky Lake very hard.”

It’s no secret that when the water is moving at Kentucky Lake, the fish tend to feed more. Yet, Morgan is well aware his pattern is dying and his fish are dwindling. He had roughly 17 pounds today before he caught his kicker.

He’s fishing a crankbait, a spoon, a hair jig, aTexas-rigged worm, a jig, and a football head and rotating through the rods on his deck, but stopping to fish a jig and worm when looking to pick off isolated fish.

Of concern for Morgan, and most competitors, is the large tournament running out of the south end of the lake as well as the various recreational boaters and other local anglers.

“Tomorrow you are going to see a lot of division,” he said. “A lot of boats are going to have three or four bass.”

Morgan believes that tomorrow is going to be more mental than physical. With the massive number of competitive and recreational boats, some anglers are sure to get thrown off their game.

“I tried to catch everything I could today because there is going to be boats everywhere and they are going to catch them tomorrow,” he added.

100th: Longer Day No Help For McMillan

> Day 2: 2, 3-07 (7, 23-10)

After catching 20-3 on day 1, Brandon McMillan never imagined today could be so cruel, but after bagging two keepers for 3-07, he got a taste of how punishing ledge-fishing can be.

“I thought for sure that I’d catch one good one off of my best hole and at least a 3 1/2 -pounder,” he said. “I had a shallow spot I could go and catch all the 2 and 2 1/2-pound fish I could catch.”

On Thursday, he had nearly 17 pounds in the boat by 8:30 a.m. and he thought the extra half hour of fishing time today would pay off before it got real hot and sunny.

“Today, they were gone,” he added. “I fished it for an hour, as thorough as I could. It was like a ghost town. I couldn’t see them on the graph, they just weren’t there, they were done.”

The fish that did bite were fussy about committing to the bait. McMillan cited numerous lost fish that never ate his baits as they should have.
