What was expected to be a tight event weight-wise is as tight as it can get after 2 days of Elite Series competition with 1 day apiece in the books at Norfork and Bull Shoals lakes.

There’s a tie atop the leaderboard, the third-place angler is 4 ounces back and less than 3 pounds separates positions 1 through 9. With oodles of 2- to 2 1/2-pound fish still swimming around at Bull Shoals, site of today’s action and where tomorrow’s competition will play out, it’s reasonable to expect the standings will remain tight right to the end.

Bill Lowen and Chris Zaldain share the top spot with 30-14 each. Lowen caught a stout 17-04 today to rise from 11th. Zaldain, meanwhile, followed up his 16-pound effort at Norfork with a 14-12 bag. Both anglers are seeking their first full-field Elite Series wins.

Keith Poche, who had a miserable start to his season, tacked on 14-13 and has 30-10 in 3rd place. Elite Series newcomer Adrian Avena moved up to 4th with 29-15 after sacking 15-15. Randall Tharp remained in 5th thanks to a 13-12 limit that gave him 29-04.

Day-1 leader Matt Herren caught 11-06 and slipped to 8th with 28-06.

Here's a look at the Top 12 after day 2 of competition, with the deficit margin from Lowen and Zaldain indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1 (tie). Bill Lowen: 30-14
1 (tie). Chris Zaldain: 30-14
3. Keith Poche: 30-10 (00-04)
4. Adrian Avena: 29-15 (00-15)
5. Randall Tharp: 29-04 (1-10)
6. David Mullins: 28-11 (2-03)
7. Carl Jocumsen: 28-09 (2-05)
8. Matt Herren: 28-06 (2-08)
9. Jacob Powroznik: 28-01 (2-13)
10. Greg Hackney: 27-12 (3-02)
11. Mike McClelland: 27-11 (3-03)
12. Brandon Palaniuk: 27-09 (3-05)

Only three anglers who caught less than 10 pounds on day 1 managed to make the Top-50 cut this week. Among them was Tommy Biffle, who was buried in 103rd in points entering this event and caught just 8 pounds Thursday. He bagged a tournament-best 18-07 to move up 71 spots to 18th with 26-07. Clifford Pirch caught 15-15 and also made a big move, coming from 58th to 17th with 26-08.

Mark Menendez couldn’t maintain his standing among the leaders as he caught 4-03 (two fish) and dropped to 78th from 2nd. David Walker also struggled today, falling from 12th to 89th after catching 5-05 (two fish).

Bull Shoals produced 13 stringers in excess of 15 pounds compared to five such bags that were caught at Norfork on Thursday. While the water had receded some since practice, a development that hindered the strategy of some competitors, there are still plenty of areas loaded with fish, especially brush and bushes and any spawning pocket.

Today was sunny with a bit more of a breeze than was expected, which made sight-fishing more of a challenge. Tomorrow is expected to be another bright and sunny day with temperatures approaching 80 degrees and light winds from the southeast.

The field will be reduced to the Top 12 after tomorrow’s round, with Norfork serving as the host venue for Sunday, when the winner will determined by highest cumulative weight.

Lowen Likes What He’s Doing

> Day 2: 5, 17-04 (10, 30-14)

Lowen had to run a good distance to get to the area he’s fishing, but once he got there today, he felt right at home.

“I’m running up the river and flipping bushes,” he said. “Everything went to plan the last couple of days and I just hope it continues.”

He said this particular tactic has worked all week, regardless of the conditions.

“I caught them when it was sunny with no wind and I caught them in practice when it was rainy and cloudy,” he added. “It’s been good so far, so I’ll either catch them or I won’t. I’m happy with what’s going on at both lakes. Both are fishing in my wheelhouse right now.”

His best stretch of water is roughly an hour-long boat ride from the Bull Shoals Boat Dock and he has three other areas saved for tomorrow.

“The problem is they’re far apart,” he said.

He caught fish consistently today – his bag was all largemouth – and managed two key upgrades late in the day.

“There are so many 2 1/2- to 2 3/4-pounders there that are just good, solid fish,” he said. “I’d give anything for a limit of them tomorrow.”

Dropshot Produced for Zaldain

> Day 2: 5, 14-12 (10, 30-14)

Since he went out today as one of the leaders, Zaldain had a cameraman with him so he could be featured on the Bassmaster Live streaming broadcast. As it turned out, he was the only competitor with a cameraman that was in an area that received cell service; the others were out of range, leaving the stage to Zaldain.

Fans who tuned in were treated to a clinic on how to dropshot bushes. Zaldain freely described how and why he was fishing that way, a rarity so early in an event, but he did so because he knows the tournament will be won on Norfork, not Bull Shoals.

“It’s a fun way to fish without a doubt,” he said. “This is the meat of the tournament, but they’re just filler days because I’m anxious to get back to Norfork. I left a bunch in there today. The tactic I’m using works great on spawning fish – just pitching a dropshot around. It’s the same bait I used when I caught that 12-pounder last year (at the Sacramento River).”

Chris Zaldain tries to play a fish out of the brush on Friday at Bull Shoals Lake.

Even with the water falling a couple inches each day, he was able to trigger bites with a 6-inch Roboworm Fat on 15-pound fluorocarbon line using a 7-foot, 5-inch Megabass Orochi XX casting rod.

“I started in the back on a shallow flat in practice and it was 2 to 2 1/2 feet deep,” he said. “Now it’s down to 1 to 1/2, so I started moving out slowly. It seems like 3 1/2 to 4 feet is the magic zone and with all that buck brush, the thicker the better. Mid to late morning was key today.”

After that, a north wind started to swirl and the bite tailed off.

“It took me nearly 2 hours to finally get out of there, but I’d done well there before fishing similar areas so I went and looked at those areas that I hadn’t seen in practice this week. I have two other areas picked out, but I’ll definitely go back to where I was.”

3rd: Poche Likes Where He's At

> Day 2: 5, 14-13 (10, 30-10)

Poche utilized the same bait today that worked for him Thursday at Norfork. He hopes it can carry him to his seventh career Top-12 cut.

“I didn’t think I had that amount of weight,” he said. “I had nine bites and caught seven. It’s nothing real special. I’m just fishing slow, a little slower than I like to fish. I’m just going down the bank and hoping to get one here and there.”

He said he’s targeting big buck brush and he’s pitching jigs from a distance to trigger bites from fish he believes are spawning around the cover.

“I think the same weight is there (for tomorrow),” he said. “It’s just about getting bit. I’m not sure if I have to run new water or go back to the same stuff. I might do a little of both.

“I wanted to catch them cranking a squarebill here, but that’s not happening. Jigs are the deal in that brush. I’ll pick up the shakey head once in a while, but I’m just trying to get five bites. I feel like another 14 or 15 pounds will keep me in it and 12 or 13 should keep me in the Top 12.”

Keith Poche maintained his place among the Top 5 on Friday by using the same technique that worked on Thursday at Norfork Lake.

5th: Tharp’s Long Run Pays Off

> Day 2: 5, 13-12 (10, 29-04)

Tharp said he’d probably prefer to still be fishing Norfork, but if he’d executed on all of the bites he got today, he might change his mind.

“I definitely knew I wouldn’t get the number of bites here that I’d been getting over at Norfork,” he said. “I had 12 bites and lost three solid largemouth today. For what I’m doing, I’m pleased with today. If I get a bite, odds are it’ll be a keeper here. I really have nothing else to go to.”

He made a lengthy run today and covered the water he intended to cover and still had some time left in the afternoon.

“Knowing that, I’ll be able to manage my day better tomorrow,” he said. “I did some sight-fishing today and caught a keeper largemouth in the clear water, but that’s not me. I just might run farther tomorrow and find some more dirtier water.”

He had one decent fish at 10:30 this morning before he made a 20-mile run. It wasn’t long before he had filled out his limit with a spotted bass and three other largemouth.

“That settled me down,” he said. “I caught another good one later on, but I’ll do whatever I have to do to make the Top 12 tomorrow. If that includes going farther than I did today, I might do that.”

6th: Schoolers Helped Mullins

> Day 2: 5, 13-13 (10, 28-11)

David Mullins is well versed in what it takes to catch fish out of clear water, coming from eastern Tennessee. He also knows that even the slightest change in conditions can trigger a shift in bass behavior, and that’s why he’s fishing on feel this week.

“Growing up on clear water, you understand it, but it changes every day,” he said. “It’s like practice meant nothing. You just have to roll with it. I wake up and see what weather will do and that dictates what you do.”

He said he broke a few fish off because of the zebra mussels that litter the bottom of Bull Shoals, but he was still satisfied with today’s outcome.

“I’m tickled with what I had,” he said. “You can never be too confident here. You can be on the best stuff today and they’ll be gone tomorrow. I didn’t know going in if I could catch a keeper.”

He said he’s got his bait selection narrowed down to two options.

“I learned a little bit about how I can catch a few,” he added, “but I’m not on them great where I have them dialed in.”

He had a slow morning and by 10 a.m., he was still without a keeper. That’s when a school of fish starting chasing bait near the surface close by.

“I caught some out of that, but that’s something you can’t rely on,” he said. “The chances of them coming up again tomorrow like that are slim. I just have to roll with the conditions.”

11th: McClelland In His Comfort Zone

> Day 2: 5, 16-10 (10, 27-11)

Mike McClelland has caught fish on a slew of different baits this week, but he’s settling into a familiar rhythm now that’s a product of his many years on the highland reservoirs of northern Arkansas and southern Missouri.

Today’s stringer was anchored by a 5-06 kicker that topped the big-bass rankings for the day.

“I told my wife last night that if I got the right five bites, I could catch between 14 and 18 pounds,” he said. “I was fortunate to have that 5-06 anchoring my bag. Otherwise, I had the same average fish everybody else had.”

He suspects the receding water may have benefited him today as it draws fish out of the ultra-shallow areas where they were easy to detect earlier in the week.

“When I practiced here Wednesday there were a lot of fish that were easy to see on shallow beds,” he said. “The falling water has pulled some of those fish back and that benefited me. It allowed me to fish specific places I knew they’d pull back to.

“I’m fishing where I’m comfortable fishing. This is one of those places where I can go fishing and not necessarily fish off of practice. I can dial it in and run with it. What I did today I caught them on places I hadn’t been to since 2012. I’m just running a pattern and covering a lot of water, and getting a lot of bites doing it.”

90th: Combs Tried to Force Crankbait

> Day 2: 4, 7-07 (9, 18-12)

Keith Combs arrived in Arkansas with 202 points in the Angler of the Year chase, good enough for 2nd place behind Brent Chapman. A 90th-place finish has dropped him into the 20s heading to Wheeler Lake for next week’s tournament.

“I wish I could do this one again,” the Texan said after scrambling in the afternoon to catch four keepers to salvage the day. “The combination of my practice on Bull Shoals and the good day I had yesterday was my downfall today.”

Known as an expert crankbait angler, Combs had great success during practice with reaction baits on both lakes. The cloudy weather may have had something to do with that, but even after seeing the forecast for the tournament days included abundant sunshine, he stuck with the plug.

“I’ve been through his before over here where I’d found them cranking and I told myself, ‘Don’t do it. They won’t be there,’ but I never developed a pattern other than the reaction cranking deal. It worked at Norfork, but Bull Shoals was different,” he said.

He passed up an area this morning that he figured would produce 11 pounds on finesse baits.

“I knew that wouldn’t do me any good so I told myself to use the morning to catch them on reaction baits,” he said. “At noon, I had zero fish so I went back to that secondary area and caught four and had a shot at a fifth one.

“I guess I’m hard headed. I have the way I like to fish and it’s deadly when it works, but there’s a window that I thought I’d learned from the last time we were here. There’s a time when you have to put the plug down. Today was good example of that.”

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 108 anglers, 95 limits (7 more than yesterday), 5 fours, 2 threes, 2 twos, 4 ones.

> The field was cut down to 50 for tomorrow. Payback this week is one spot less than it was at Winyah Bay due to rookie Matt Vermilyea’s recent withdrawal from the Elite Series. Also, Byron Velvick informed B.A.S.S. this week that he will not compete this season. He had previously announced that he would retire from the Elite Series following the 2016 season. Velvick has not returned messages seeking comment.
