Myers Bags 21-07 In Cooper To Take Lead

Britt Myers has been in contention to win Elite Series events before. In 2012, he posted consecutive runner-up finishes at Bull Shoals Lake and Douglas Lake. He admits that the stress that comes with pursuing a victory may have gotten to him then. This week, competing in his home state, he says he’s more at ease, relaxed even.

After catching a stout 21-07 stringer today, Myers jumped into the lead at the halfway point of the Winyah Bay Elite Series with a two-day total of 37-15, all out of the Cooper River and good for a 5-plus pound advantage over Kelly Jordon. Seeking his first Top-12 cut since 2013 at Bull Shoals, Myers is trying to maintain his calm, measured approach.

“I’ve been in this position before and I’d get all worked up and excited and feel I like had to make things happen,” said Myers. “This is the total opposite. I’m just fishing. I’ve been lucky to catch some key fish early each day and I’m fishing slow and methodically.

In what’s shaping up to be two separate tournaments in one – one involving the anglers making the near 2-hour run to the Cooper River and another involving those fishing elsewhere on the Winyah Bay system – Myers, Jordon and Brett Hite have managed to separate themselves from the pack, at least for now.

From Myers to Mark Menendez in 6th, the deficit is 15-08, but from Bradley Roy in 6th to Justin Lucas in 12th, the gap is just 11 ounces.

Jordon has had a memorable first couple days. He caught just one fish Thursday, but it weighed 8-05 and put him in 47th place. He followed that up with a 24-07 stringer – the biggest of the tournament – that was anchored by a 7-10 brute. His 32-12 total has him in prime position to secure his first 12-cut since 2011.

Hite, who’s also fishing the Cooper, bagged 19-11 today and moved into 3rd with 32-02. It’s a 6-pound gap back to Keith Combs, who’s in 4th for the second straight day. Combs caught 12-04 to push his total to 26-01. Randall Tharp held onto 5th as he caught 11-13 to bring his total to 25-08.

The field had the full day to fish and the catch rates increased over Thursday’s as a result. Seventeen more limits were recorded and three of the four biggest bags so far were caught today. That may be due in part to the tide cycle starting to turn in the anglers’ favor with the incoming tide occurring during the morning hours.

There were several competitors who took advantage of more favorable conditions to make sizable leaps up the leaderboard. James Elam made the biggest move, going from 95th to 35th behind a 16-02 stringer. Brent Chapman more than doubled his weight from day 1 and climbed 58 spots to 9th. Boyd Duckett caught 14-05 and advanced 50 spots to 13th while Matt Reed caught 14-12 to improve 49 places to 40th.

Day-1 leader Carl Jocumsen managed just one fish today and fell to 16th while rookie Jay Brainard zeroed and dropped from 24th to 96th.

While Myers and fellow South Carolina pro Marty Robinson are among the leaders (Robinson is 11th), Winyah was unkind to several others who call the Palmetto State home. Davy Hite zeroed today and finished 104th. Andy Montgomery caught 7-04 and was 105th and Casey Ashley caught a single fish in 2 days and finished last with 1-08.

The 51 anglers who will compete Saturday will have partly cloudy conditions and yet another day of stiff west winds to contend with as they vie for a spot in the Top 12, which earns them a chance to fish Sunday, when the winner will be determined by highest cumulative weight.

Myers Mauled ‘Em

> Day 2: 5, 21-07 (10, 37-15)

Coming into the event, Myers had hopes of fishing the Santee River. He knew it harbors some big fish and it would allow him more fishing time than making the run to the Cooper, but when he saw the heavy stain in the Santee earlier this week, he opted for the Cooper.

He’s been able to settle into one area and he continues to learn the features that are holding the better fish. His first cast today produced a 5-pounder – he thought he was snagged on some hydrilla, but when his bait started to pull back, he knew it was a fish.

“I couldn’t ask for a better start,” Myers said. “Today was one of those really magical days. I have one big area that has a lot of small details to it. Some fish are spawning and there are some ditches. I’m just rotating with the tide. I practiced in there for three days, but today was the first time I got to jerk on them for a full day. Whether I catch another one, I don’t know. It’s only halftime.

“Honestly, I’m not even thinking about winning. I’m not even excited about it. I’m just excited to have a good tournament at this point.”

He read the tide perfectly throughout the day and capitalized on several key fish that helped him have a big day.

“I have a couple key spots that are very tide-specific,” he said. “Today, I hit them at the right tide and got three 4-pound bites. Hopefully, I can keep that up and keep reading the tide when those fish move up.”

Myers said Chris Zaldain is the only other competitor in his vicinity, but others started to work their way closer today.

“I’ve been fortunate to catch the bigger ones so far,” he said. “Who knows, maybe it’ll be him tomorrow. I know how it goes.”

2nd: Jordon Continues to Gamble

> Day 2: 5, 24-07 (10, 32-12)

Jordon has always carried the reputation of hunting for the biggest bass on whatever fishery he’s at. So far, that approach has been productive this week and today it resulted in a great stringer.

“I’m the type of angler who swings for the fence at every event,” Jordon said in the daily B.A.S.S. press release. “It’s cost me big time in the past, but today it definitely paid off. So much of the success in this sport hinges on simple decisions, and I learned something valuable yesterday that made me think I could replicate it again today.”

Jordon said his lone fish on day 1 revealed what he thought might be a workable pattern, and he stuck with it today.

“I am going to fish the same pattern again tomorrow,” he said. “But, it’s hard to say whether the same caliber fish will bite or not. Because this fishery is so expansive, once you decide where you’re going to fish, you’re pretty much committed. I’m going to gamble and see if I can do it again.”

3rd: Tide Getting Right for Hite

> Day 2: 5, 19-11 (10, 32-02)

It took Hite one day in practice to realize the Cooper River was the most logical place to be if he wanted to have a shot at winning this week. The quality of fish there is just better, on average, compared to other areas he sampled.

“I was torn on the mentality to have here,” he said. “On Monday, I practiced local near Winyah and was not impressed. On Tuesday, I went to the Cooper and as soon as I launched the boat, it reminded me of the California Delta so it felt a little like home. I caught a couple keepers and found this spot 3 hours into the day. I knew it was a special place and I expanded on it from there.”

“This spot” has held up for two days so far and he’s confident it can carry him through to Sunday.

“It has all the characteristics to hold a lot of fish,” he added. “It’s going to be won over (on the Cooper), no doubt. After what I saw the first day of practice, taking the survival mode approach of staying close could turn into a catastrophe real easily.”

The tide was more angler-friendly today and will only improve as the tournament goes on, he said.

“By the time we got there yesterday, most of the flow had come in,” he said. “Today, we got an hour more of incoming tide, plus we weren’t delayed, so it was nearly 2 1/2 hours of lower tide. Tomorrow it’ll be another hour on top of that.”

He said he’s able to catch them on low and high tide, but he prefers the low because it positions the fish on more obvious spots.

He’s caught about a dozen keepers per day and said a bait change today resulted in him catching his biggest fish – a kicker close to 7 pounds.

“That was key because it gave me confidence in something else,” he added.

4th: Combs Made Most of New Area

Combs thought he was getting dialed in on how some of the fish he’s targeting behave on different tide scenarios. Then today happened. While he maintained his place among the leaders, he’s still not sure what to think or what to expect tomorrow.

“I’m using my limited tidal experience to tell me when to go to what place and I’ve been wrong,” he said. “I caught them on a high tide when I thought it would be good on a low tide. The thing that’s weird about this place is it’s a tidal fishery and it’s around the spawn and I feel like the fish I’m catching are moving up onto beds, but when I found the place I caught them today, it was literally out of the water. The guess-work continues.”

He abandoned his day-1 area early today after it became apparent he and others had beat it up pretty good Thursday.

“I ran into another little pocket where I’d had a bite during practice,” he said. “ I didn’t think it was special, but it was sure good today.”

One place he’s pretty much ruled out is the Cooper River. He’ll continue to catch what he can in the Pee Dee and Waccamaw rivers.

“I knew it was going to be the deal over there, but I couldn’t get enough going in practice to go over there,” he said. “I think the few who are dialing them in will keep catching them.”

5th: Tharp’s First Bite Was Big

Tharp is fishing how he likes to fish, but he senses his shot at winning may be evaporating since he’s not among the Cooper Crew. He said his goal Saturday is to lock up a spot in the Top 12, then possibly head to the Cooper on Sunday.

“I’m extremely happy to be where I’m at,” he said. “It’s far from easy. I caught six keepers today and my first bite was a 5-pounder. That took some pressure off. It wasn’t as easy as yesterday.”

He had two flurries during the day that accounted for his weight. Four of his keepers came on a jig and two bit a frog. He eventually left his area because he wanted to conserve what was still there.

“It took me half the day today to catch them,” he added. “I had thought the tide would be better for me today, but it seemed like it took them longer to get to biting.”

He thinks increased fishing pressure in the area today may have impacted his productivity as well.

“I had a lot of help today,” he said. “I saw one other boat yesterday, but had seven around me today.”

61st: Mueller Slowed Down

> Day 2: 5, 16-05 (5, 16-05)

If Paul Mueller had Thursday to do over again, he’d have fished a little slower and hopefully been able to put at least one fish in the boat. Instead, he zeroed before bouncing back with 16-05 today to salvage a 61st-place finish. He wound up missing the cut by 11 ounces.

“I am disappointed because of yesterday,” he said. “I knew that if I didn’t catch them today, I could throw out my hopes of making the Bassmaster Classic. It’s got to be good finishes from here on out to make it.”

Facing flood tide conditions Thursday and a compacted day due to the delayed start, he fished too fast. He had three bites and lost them all. A slower approach today proved more productive.

“I wasn’t thorough enough Thursday,” he said. “I slowed down today and I feel like I could have a great day there tomorrow.”

> Day 2 stats – 109 anglers, 76 limits (18 more than yesterday), 15 fours, 7 threes, 4 twos, 3 ones, 4 zeroes (4 fewer than yesterday).

> Clifford Pirch and John Murray both caught 17-00 and tied for 51st, but Pirch won the tiebreaker and qualified for the weekend since he had the better single-day stringer – a 9-05 bag caught today.
