Not 60 seconds after local son Terry Scroggins weighed in a 21-10 stringer to take the lead in his backyard Friday did Greg Hackney steal his thunder with an 18-01 bag that pushed him into the top spot at the St. Johns River Elite Series.

Leaderboard shuffling was the theme of the day as the season opener hit the halfway point with Hackney out front with 39-06, good for a 14-ounce edge on Scroggins and a 15-ounce advantage on 3rd-place Jordan Lee.

“I don’t really ever get over confident about Florida because I know you’re always one or two bites away from having things go in your favor or not having them go in your favor,” Hackney said.

As for leading at the halfway point, albeit by a slim margin, he knows it could be short lived based on how finicky Florida bass can be.

“Honestly, I’m kind of bland,” he said. “Yeah, I’m leading and that’s great and all, but I’m just glad I made the top 50. I’ve fished enough to know this feeling. It’s a long way from over.”

It’s not often tournaments in Florida come down to ounces, but with 1-07 separating the top 6 names on the leaderboard it should make for an interesting weekend in Palatka. Scroggins was in 37th after day 1, but his weight jumped by nearly 5 pounds today and he has a 38-08 total with every ounce coming out of the St. Johns River, not Lake George where a good share of the field has been.

Lee caught 17-08 and has 38-07 and he stalks his first Elite Series win. Marty Robinson tacked on 19-12 to improve his total to 38-05 in 4th. Brent Ehrler had a 9-02 brute anchoring his 18-11 stringer as he moved into 5th with 38-03.

Day-1 leader Brandon Lester slipped to 6th after bagging 14-02.

Here's a look at the Top 12 after day 1 of competition, with deficit margin from Hackney indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Greg Hackney: 39-06
2. Terry Scroggins: 38-08 (00-14)
3. Jordan Lee: 38-07 (00-15)
4. Marty Robinson: 38-05 (1-01)
5. Brent Ehrler: 38-03 (1-03)
6. Brandon Lester: 37-15 (1-07)
7. Bradley Roy: 37-02 (2-04)
8. Billy McCaghren, Jr.: 37-01 (2-05)
9. Justin Lucas: 36-10 (2-12)
10. Mike Iaconelli: 36-05 (3-01)
11. Davy Hite: 35-15 (3-07)
12. Ken Iyobe: 35-14 (3-08)

While Scroggins’ move up the standings was impressive, fellow Palatka resident Cliff Prince pulled off the biggest improvement of the day. After mistakenly turning off his livewell on day 1, resulting in his five fish dying and leaving him in 95th place, Prince rebounded with a day-best 23-01 that included a tournament-best 10-08 kicker to move up to 18th. Justin Lucas caught 22-13 and jumped 59 places up to 9th with 36-10.

Aaron Martens, the reigning Angler of the Year, had his string of six straight top-15 finishes in full-field Elite Series events stopped as he finished 52nd, missing the cut by 6 ounces. Chris Lane, who dominated the St. Johns in 2014, finished 71st.

There were 10 anglers who saw their weights drop off my more than half today, including Drew Benton and Cliff Crochet, who were 2nd and 3rd, respectively after Thursday. Benton caught 9-14 and slipped to 24th while Crochet, who had three for 6-02, dropped to 49th.

The conditions were much better than expected as rain had been in the forecast, but it held off for the span of today’s competition. Cloud cover gave way to some sun in the afternoon when those in the later flights benefitted from more active fish. Lake George continued to get hit hard today, but there wasn’t another noticeable migration of fish into the spawning areas that have already taken a thrashing.

The field was reduced today to the top 51 and they will compete Saturday with the top 12 following day 3 moving on to Sunday when the winner will be determined by highest cumulative weight.

Hackney Mostly Casting

> Day 2: 5, 18-01 (10, 39-06)

As they sit on the map, the cities of Gonzales, La., and Palatka, Fla., are nearly on the same geographic parallel, which to Hackney means the fish in both locales should be at roughly the same spot in their spawning cycles.

“The fish at my house have been spawning since January and I read where they’re catching them off the bed at (Lake) Hartwell and we’re further south and at much lower elevation so in theory a lot of these fish are probably done spawning,” he said. “Another way to tell is there’s not near as many big ones being caught. The last couple times we’ve been here, there have been a lot more 8s and 9s weighed in.”

Regardless of the spawning phase or lunkers being caught, Hackney finds himself in the thick of the race with 2 days to go. He’s one of four anglers to crack the 18-pound mark both days, but he’s doing his best to temper expectation moving forward.

“Fishing’s pretty tough for me,” he said. “It’s been hard to catch big ones. Everywhere I’m fishing they’re getting gone and I feel like I have to run other water tomorrow. This afternoon, I went back and spent several hours on places I fished yesterday – I didn’t start there because knew better – and I caught fish, but there were a lot of males. It doesn’t seem like new ones are moving up.”

He’s yet to catching anything bigger than 6 pounds so he’s hoping his time to tangle with a giant is coming soon.

Terry Scroggins is tapping into his vast history at the St. Johns River this week.

“Who knows. The deal is I keep thinking I’m fixing to run into a big one,” he said. “Regardless, I set the my expectations fairly low so I’m way ahead already, so it’s all good.”

He said the split of fish he’s caught casting versus looking is 80-20 and he doesn’t anticipate that changing.

“This place is so fickle,” he said. “I looked back on every time we’ve been here and the funny thing about this place is it’s really good, but you’re always one or two bites away from having a good day or not having a good day. That’s Florida for this time of year.”

2nd: Scroggins Capitalizing on Experience

> Day 2: 5, 21-10 (10, 38-08)

Scroggins’ success so far has been based on him avoiding the crush of boats in Lake George, where the fish are being pressured (or caught) non-stop. He’s tapped into this vast local knowledge of the river and plans to ride it the rest of the way.

“The key today was I knew going in there were a lot of fish in Lake George, but along with that I knew there would be a lot of pressure and boats stacked up in there and I didn’t want to get hung up with that,” he said. “I went and caught a limit early today and then went sight-fishing up north in the river.

“What’s difficult about it is there’s a lot more tidal influence up there than there is in George, where you can do it all day long and not notice any difference. Up there, you get half a tide swing and then you can’t see on high tide.”

With the tide low in the morning and then coming in the rest of the day, it’s not an ideal scenario, but he’s making the most of it.

“The tide is backward from what you’d want it to be,” he said. “With so much cloud cover and all of the rain we’ve had, you can’t see in the morning so I’ve been fishing half the day and then running up there when I think I’ll be able to see. It’s a been a small window of time.”

Not surprisingly, he’s been all by himself so far and he thinks he can maintain the pace he’s set so far. He lost what he said was an 8-pounder on Thursday; otherwise he’d be leading.

“I think I can keep it up,” he said. It’s fishing, though. On the St. Johns River, it’s hard to catch them 4 days in a row. I couldn’t catch them today where I caught them yesterday. I just hope to keep running into them.”

3rd: Casting’s Been Key for Lee

> Day 2: 5, 17-08 (10, 38-07)

Lee says he’s yet to truly figure out the keys to fishing in Florida, so maybe this week is the first step in that process. The second-year pro spent most of day 1 casting a Strike King Cut R Worm around and it resulted in a 20-15 stringer.

Today, it was more of the same and thanks to a late-day kicker in the 6-pound range, he’s in the mix for his first Elite Series win.

“It’s really unexpected,” he said. “I hadn’t found anything special. I’ve made some good decisions the last two days and had some stuff go my way.”

Jordan Lee made up for a slow morning today with a 6-pounder in the afternoon.

He backtracked through his day-1 water today, but he was stuck on two 2-pounders at noon. He moved to another area and caught a 2-pounder and another small one, then made another move to catch his fifth fish before sticking the 6-pounder which allowed him to cull out a 1-pounder.

“That made me look like I was really catching ‘em, but I’d really only come across one good one,” he said. “That’s what you have to do down here – you’re either moving round and dragging stuff or you just come across some good fish.

“I pretty much wasted half my day today. I’m not going to the crowd again (tomorrow). I’m going to fish some water I ended on today and some new water and check some stuff from practice. That’s what it’s going to take.”

4th: Robinson Still Has Untapped Areas

> Day 2: 5, 19-12 (10, 38-05)

Robinson also has popped 18 pounds or more each day, but it’s been a grind.

“You figure it out a little bit every day and hope it holds up the next day to give you something to start on,” he said. “Then you hope to figure out a little bit more to get through to the next day when you try to build on that and keep going.”

He’s trying to make his first top-12 cut since 2012 at Toledo Bend, where he finished 3rd.

“It’s always good (to be near the top),” he said. “I’d love to make the top 12 and I figure I’m going to need at least 15 to 16 to have a shot at it. We’ll see what happens.”

He has one area that was productive in practice that he hasn’t gone to yet so that’ll be part of tomorrow’s game plan.

Today, while casting around in an area that had plenty of beds, he caught a 7-pounder “just fishing around,” he said. “I don’t think many more have moved up. Some may overnight. The sun came out and it did get warm today and I saw an area that had some males in it so I might have to fish around tomorrow to catch them.”

5th: 9-Pounder Key For Ehrler

> Day 2: 5, 18-11 (10, 38-03)

There was a point not too long ago where one of Ehrler’s few weak points was fishing in Florida during the spawn. He seemed to shake that with runner-up and 11th-place finishes in his last two FLW Tour events at Lake Okeechobee.

He’s at it again this week, but today’s success was rooted around one dynamic bite that moved him into the Top 5 rather than on the brink of missing the cut.

“Things went well yesterday and they went well again today, too, but I went several hours today without a bite,” he said. “Whereas I had a limit at 9 a.m. Thursday, I didn’t have a fish at 10 o’clock today. It was brutal.”

His fortunes turned when he caught a 9-02 that accounted for nearly half of his day’s weight.

“I got lucky and caught that fish,” he said. “Granted, it was in an area that I wanted to fish and I slid up and caught her. I was fortunate to get that fish. At first, I thought it was a 5, then when it spun on my bait, I thought it was a 7. Turns out it was a 9.”

He’s mostly sight-fishing and everything he caught today he had a visual on before he presented his bait. His plan for Saturday will depend on what the weather does.

“If it rains that will affect what I’m going to do,” he added. “I’m probably going to hit different areas because I can’t go back and beat my head against the wall again. I fished the area thoroughly today and it wasn’t exciting other than one bite.”

7th: Roy on Productive Rotation

> Day 2: 5, 18-13 (10, 37-02)

Bradley Roy had identified three areas that seem to have a large population of fish and he’s milked them for 2 days with plans to do it again Saturday.

“Today was different just because yesterday we were able to see fish and had specific fish marked from practice,” he said. “I had none marked that I could go to today. I caught a few fishing today and found others that had pulled up. I’m just going back through the area and hoping to find more to come up.”

He doesn’t feel as though another wave of fish is coming in to spawn so he knows he needs to maximize his opportunities.

“I’m just trying to make the best of what I’ve got,” he said. “I’ve figured out a way to stay more consistent. I’m catching most of my fish off beds, but I’m not seeing every one of them first.”

He said he lost one good fish that would’ve helped him, but otherwise he’s been happy with his decision making so far. Keeping up his current pace, though, is going to be a crapshoot.

“I feel confident I can catch fish; it’s just a matter of getting a few good bites,” he said. “Cutting the field down in half will help I think. It’s the St. Johns River, though. Who knows when the next wave is coming up. You could catch 20 or catch 10.”

63rd: Shryock Erred on Day 1

> Day 2: 4, 9-13 (9, 26-01)

Fletcher Shryock’s season opener didn’t go as he’d hoped. He had a decent day 1, catching 16-04, which had him in 43rd place. He then spent all of Friday morning at the ramp, waiting until noon to blast off after B.A.S.S. penalized him for a rule violation that allegedly occurred Thursday.

The incident in question took place after Shryock had already caught a limit for roughly 14 pounds. He had intentions to enter an area in Lake George, but Randy Howell and Davy Hite were headed in the same direction and not wanting to be perceived that he was cutting them off, Shryock opted to take a different path toward the area. In doing so, his boat became stuck on a sandbar.

He got out of his boat in an effort to dislodge the boat. Once the boat was freed – he pushed it forward – Shryock continued on and fished the rest of the day.

Afterward, he was informed by B.A.S.S. officials that he wouldn’t be allowed to blast off with the rest of the field Friday after it was determined he violated Rule C15, which states, “During the competition days, competitors must not depart the boat to land fish or to make the boat more accessible to fishing waters.”

By pushing his boat forward and continuing to fish, Shryock violated the rule spelled out above.

“I was trying to be polite and be ethical on not cutting off Howell and Hite,” he said. “It was all about ethics. I knew I would have to run in that way to do it right and I knew I’d have to run over a bar, but I ran over one of the highest spots on the whole sand bar. Later today, I went in there 60 feet to the one side and made it no problem.

“I was trying to do the right thing the whole time, but that doesn’t mean I’m not wrong. No question, by the book, I broke the rule.”

Shryock admitted being ignorant of Rule C15 and knows B.A.S.S. could’ve disqualified his day-1 catch, even though he maintains he gained no competitive advantage by having to shove his boat over a sandbar into an area where other boats already were.

“I had a penalty coming without question,” he said. “I think they handled it well. I just wish it wasn’t as stiff. I had less than 3 hours to fish on George today. I was able to salvage some points. I probably would’ve had a good tournament if I’d gotten another full day to fish.”

As it stood, he had a limited window to make up the lost ground. The first fish he caught today was a 6-pounder and that gave him hope he could pull it off, but he wound up wrangled three other small fish and finished with four for 9-13.

“I was really trying to focus,” he said. “I didn’t know if I’d get another bite. It was cool to catch that one. If I had another hour, I would’ve caught a 3 pounder and made the cut.”

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 109 anglers, 96 limits (13 fewer than day 1), 7 fours, 3 threes, 1 two, 1 one, 1 zero.

> John Murray zeroed today after opting to stay longer in the area where he lost what he estimated to be a 6- to 8-pounder. “I had a couple small ones, but I figured the only way to get more points was with (the big one),” he said.
