Lambert's Consistency Pushed Him To Top Slot

It's rare that the winner of a high-level tournament at Lake Okeechobee weighs an average of less than 15 pounds per day. With the fishable water that Jason Lambert had for last week's FLW Costa Series Southeastern Division Opener, he didn't think he could pull it off, either.

"I thought I could catch 15 to 16 pounds a day and at least get a check," said the FLW Tour pro from Tennessee. "There's no way what I was doing would've been good enough to win under normal conditions, but it was so nasty and cold that the numbers game won out."

Lambert's 44-12 total over 3 days eclipsed runner-up and fellow Tour competitor Glenn Browne by a pound and a half. He took over the lead on day 2 and hung on for the victory despite catching less than 13 pounds on the final day.

It was a strong performance against a massive 250-boat field that featured many of FLW's stoutest sticks, who were getting a jumpstart on the Tour derby that'll take place there in early February.

"I'm looking forward to it and now I've got a little gas money to get back down there," he said. "What's funny is I found a group of fish way down south during practice and I think I could've smashed them if the north wind hadn't muddied up the water.

"Okeechobee is one of the funnest places in the world to fish when it's warm, but it can get tough when it's cold."

Here are some of the details of his Costa Series victory.

Practice

Lambert pre-fished for the 5 days preceding the start of the tournament. He went in with the mindset that he'd do all he could to avoid spending the event punching mats, which is frequently the best route to victory at the Big O.

"I can flip and punch and I enjoy it when it's good, but I'd rather be casting," he said. "I knew what I was planning on doing, but I just didn't know where."

He spent his practice time looking for submerged hydrilla and avoided the Harney Pond area. He discovered two productive areas less than 3 miles apart along the North Shore, which he had pretty much to himself throughout the tournament. He found the fish on the outside edges susceptible to a swimjig and a spinnerbait, with the latter being particularly effective in windy conditions.

"I think they were pre-spawners that were just coming in," he said. "I could catch basically as many as I wanted to in practice – there were a lot of numbers.

"I caught a couple of 4-pounders in practice, but no real big ones – not the size that I saw in the tournament."

The air temperature was 80 degrees on his first day of practice and the water temperature was 63. That was prior to the arrival of a major storm front that brought much colder air, heavy rain and winds that reached 50 mph at times.

By the end of the week, the water temp had plummeted 14 degrees. Anybody familiar with Florida bass fishing knows that Sunshine State largemouths usually refuse to cooperate under such conditions, setting the stage for a relatively low-weight event that Lambert was well-prepared for.

Lambert's best spot was a stretch of hydrilla that was 500 to 600 yards in length, and he caught three quick keepers (including a 5 1/2-pounder) shortly after his arrival on day 1. He then went about 3 hours without a bite, but hit another flurry in the afternoon that produce six fish, one of which was a 4 1/2.

He started day 2 trailing leader Peter Cherkas by nearly 3 1/2 pounds, but had made up that deficit by the time it was over. It rained for much of the day until the sun popped out at about 2 p.m.

"I actually caught 20 keepers that day," he said. "I caught them pretty consistently until the heavy front blew through at about 1 o'clock, then I only caught three more that afternoon."

He had a 1-10 edge over Browne when he launched on the final day. He expected the bite to improve for the Top 10 under the much-calmer conditions, but that wasn't the case.

The water color in his primary and backup areas had turned considerably darker. He boated his best fish of the tournament – a 6 1/2-pounder – in the first 10 minutes, but didn't get another bite.

He eventually shifted into scramble mode and ran around to other hydrilla stretches just trying to catch four more keepers. He abandoned his quick-moving baits in favor of a worm.

"On my first little move I caught two keepers, but the rest of the day it was just dink and dunk," he said. "I only caught seven fish."

He assumed that his chance at victory was gone.

"I told my co-angler that my water had gotten blow out and there wasn't much else I could do, and I was content to finish 2nd or 3rd – it was a good finish to get the year started right. It wasn't until I got back (to the launch) and started talking to everybody else that I realized I might still have a chance."
