While Chris Dillow was retying his four jig rods last Friday night in preparation for the final day of the James River Bassmaster Northern Open, he also was finishing up a home inspection addendum for a real estate deal he’d been working on.

“I had some work to take care of,” said Dillow, a full-time realtor from Waynesboro, Va.

Did he ever?

After taking over the lead on day 2 at the James, Dillow burned the midnight oil – he said he got about 2 hours’ sleep Friday night – before walloping a 19-02 stringer Saturday to run away with his first B.A.S.S. victory. Dillow is no stranger to success on the James or tidal water for that matter. He’s won two BFLs and a Rayovac Series in 2008 at the James, but his latest triumph tops them all.

“I was humbled to be on stage with the caliber of fishermen I was up against,” Dillow said. “Two of the other finalists (Mike Iaconelli and Boyd Duckett) have won the Classic. To compete against them is humbling, but to win is extra special.”

His strategy had little to do with the tide cycles and was mainly centered on hard cover – “Anything I could throw my jig against,” he said – away from current along a single stretch of the James.

“I know others were running the whole river, but the kind of fish I catch on my jig, I like water on their heads,” he said. “That way they get comfortable. On low water, they get spooky.”

Here’s a rundown of how Dillow did it.

Practice

Dillow’s practice consisted of one day during which he ran up the Chickahominy River to Walker Dam.

“I ran up there just to get it out of my system,” he said. “I know it’d been won up there before and I had to go check it out so I could decide whether to make the run or stay in the James.”

He caught three fish swimming a jig in pads, but didn’t get the vibe that he’d be able to outfish the crowds that he expected to gather in the Chick during the tournament.

Another element of his preparation was his 38th-place finish in the James River Northern Rayovac Series a few weeks ago.

“I made the run to the Chick on day 1 and when I was halfway there, I was kicking myself,” he said. “It was raining and foggy and I was thinking I never should’ve done this. I got there and mentally I’d already had myself beat. I ran back to the James and caught a 4-pounder that was my only fish.

“On day 2, I stayed in the James and caught 14-11. At that point, I said there was no way I was going to the Chick (during the Open). That’s why I went there in practice – just to get it out of my mind.”

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 18-13
> Day 2: 5, 12-13
> Day 3: 5, 19-02
> Total = 15, 50-12

After choosing not to run to the Chick, Dillow narrowed his focus to targeting big fish on the first 2 days. He hit a milk run of spots he has confidence in and kept his jig in his hand almost exclusively.

“I knew I needed to catch a load early or I’d be going home,” he said.

He flipped a black and blue jig to wood and other hard targets and finished the day with a paltry six bites that included a 5- and 7-pounder that anchored his 18-13 sack. Only Boyd Duckett, who was dialed in on the tide cycles, caught a bigger bag on day 1 with a 20-04 effort.

“I don’t run the tide,” Dillow said. “There are certain areas I’ll hit when it gets more out and other areas I key on with more water on them. Maybe I overthink it, but that’s what I’m comfortable with.”

Day 2 was clearly his toughest day as far as triggering bigger fish to eat, but his 12-13 stringer put him out front by 2 1/2 pounds after Duckett came in with just under 9 pounds.

He caught a few fish early on a Strike King 1.5 square-bill crankbait, but later culled them out for jig fish.

“I had more trouble with jig probably because I had milked my area pretty good,” he said.

While he worked on tackle and real estate paperwork on the eve of the final day, he set a goal for himself that he felt would be tough to beat, especially with the higher-than-normal water and unruly tide cycle.

“If I can catch 15 with a 3-pound lead, there was a chance I could win,” he said. “I figured it would be tougher.”

Day 3 was tougher for everybody in the Top 12, except Dillow.

His first fish was a 4-pounder and that set the tone not only for him, but for his co-angler as well.

“After that first fish, I felt like things were going to go my way,” he said.

He made a switch to a green-pumpkin color scheme on his jig/trailer combo and that seemed to get him back on the bigger fish.

“The last day I did more swimming and dragging of the jig on deeper structure,” he said. “I caught my last one flipping. I fished deeper than I had been because of a drop off I’d found.

“I used a little reverse psychology compared to what I had been doing. I went for a quick limit first and then went to the meat. I’d been doing it the other way around.”

His co-angler had been having success with a spinnerbait, but Dillow insisted he tie on a jig on the final day.

“He caught a 5 on it and then I caught a 7 a few minutes later,” he said. “I had the best day of my life out there. It was the way fishing ought to be. We were high-fiving and hugging each other. I was so sick when he didn’t win the co-angler side.”

Dillow’s 19-02 haul on the final day was the biggest stringer among the 12 finalists by nearly 6 1/2 pounds (Simonton caught 12-11).

“I’ve won nine times now and 90 percent of those wins have been with my jig,” he said. “I’d rather get skunked or smash them as long as I have that jig in my hand. It helps to be committed to trying to find five bites.”

Winning Pattern Notes

> The decision to not run to the Chickahominy River was a key turning point for Dillow, who didn’t go far past the mouth of the Appomattox River.

“I knew I’d sink or swim in the James,” he said. “The other two tournaments I’ve won there, I never left the James. I fished mainly wood, rock and old pilings. Most of the better fish hit the jig on the fall or after I’d pop it a few times and they’d load up on it.”

Winning Gear Notes

> Jig gear: 7’11” heavy-action G. Loomis GLX casting rod, Lew's Super Duty Speed Spool casting reel (8.0:1 gear ratio), 20-pound Seaguar InvizX fluorocarbon line, 3/8- and 1/2-oz. homemade jig (black/blue and green-pumpkin), 3/8- and 1/2-oz. Strike King Denny Brauer Structure Jig (green-pumpkin), Zoom Super Chunk trailer (black/blue), Berkley PowerBait Chigger Chunk trailer (green-pumpkin).

> When his supply of homemade jigs started to dwindle, he put his homemade skirts on the Brauer Structure Jig and fished those on days 2 and 3.

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – “The Good Lord. I give him a lot of credit. It was meant to be for me to win it. I didn’t do a whole lot, but keep a jig in my hand. He blessed me with the bites I needed.

> Performance edge – “I can’t say enough about my Ranger boat and Evinrude E-Tec motor. I had people who couldn’t keep up with me running down the river. My Solar Bat sunglasses were also a big deal in this tournament.”

Notable

> Dillow initially had only signed up for the James River, but said he will now attempt to sign up for the remaining two Northern Opens – at Oneida Lake and Lake Erie. For the Classic berth to be official, he needs to compete in all three events in the division.

“I just hope there’s no waiting list,” he quipped.
