Edwin Evers has played the role of hunter before at Kentucky Lake and come up short. On Sunday, he’ll be the hunted.

Regardless of where he sits in the standings, he says that won’t impact his strategy as he tries to nail down his fourth career Elite Series victory.

“It’s always the same mindset for me,” he said. “You can’t catch enough on the last day.”

After rolling up more than 51 pounds over the first 2 days, Evers caught his smallest bag of the event today, but the 21-02 was enough to keep him at the top of the leaderboard entering the final day. His 72-04 total is 2 1/2 pounds better than Derek Remitz, who tacked on 22-07 and has 69-11.

Everyone else in the Top 5 is within 3-09 of Evers and two-time Kentucky Lake winner Kevin VanDam holds down 6th, just 4-10 back, so the final day figures to be a drama-filled shootout.

Brandon Lester caught a stout 24-05, his biggest of the tournament, to move into 3rd with 69-08 while Fred Roumbanis continued his best showing of the season with a day-best 26-15 stringer that moved him from 13th up to 4th with 69-02.

Brett Hite is in the Top 5 for the third straight day after bagging 22-00 to push his total to 68-11.

Here's a look at the Top 12 entering the final day of competition, with deficit margin from Evers indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Edwin Evers: 72-04
2. Derek Remitz: 69-11 (2-09)
3. Brandon Lester: 69-08 (2-12)
4. Fred Roumbanis: 69-02 (3-02)
5. Brett Hite: 68-11 (3-09)
6. Kevin VanDam: 67-10 (4-10)
7. Brandon Card: 67-00 (5-04)
8. Micah Frazier: 65-14 (6-06)
9. Tim Horton: 65-13 (6-07)
10. Andy Montgomery: 63-13 (8-07)
11. Billy McCaghren: 62-15 (9-05)
12. Kotaro Kiriyama: 62-06 (9-14)

For VanDam, this marks his fifth 12-cut in five Elite Series events at Kentucky Lake. Micah Frazier (8th) and Tim Horton (9th) locked up their second Top-12 finishes of the season while Roumbanis, Brandon Card (7th), Billy McCaghren (11th) and Kotaro Kiriyama (12th) made their first 12-cuts since 2013.

Kiriyama rebounded from a 15-pound day Thursday to catch 24-15 today and secure the last spot in the Top 12 with 62-06.

Chris Johnston and Darold Gleason, two of the competitors who qualified for BASSFest through the Bassmaster Opens, finished 13th and 14th, respectively, with Johnston missing the Top-12 cut by 2 ounces. Johnston was the only angler to catch 20-plus pounds each day and not qualify for the final day.

Conditions were tougher in general today. There was some current in the morning, but it eventually tapered off and the lake slicked off for the most part, save for the spectator and local traffic. Getting bites under low-current, no-wind conditions is one of the tougher challenges this week so any sort of water movement Sunday will be critical.

The race for the Angler of the Year got significantly tighter at the top of the standings this week. With his 46th-place finish, Dean Rojas will hold onto the lead with 424 points, but his cushion is down to 3 points over Justin Lucas, who finished 38th. Two-time AOY Aaron Martens is now just 1 point behind Lucas, thanks to a 15th-place showing.

Evers was able to maintain his lead thanks to a 6-12 kicker.

Open Mind for Evers on Sunday

> Day 3: 5, 21-02 (15, 72-04)

One key element of the first 2 days for Evers was he was able to catch some good fish early in the day, which afforded him some time to idle additional areas in search of different schools.

He wasn’t able to follow the same routine today as a slower bite and tougher fishing overall kept him on the move as he worked over areas that had been productive already.

“I’m glad to have the lead, but it was a little rougher today,” he said. “There wasn’t as much current and I just got fewer bites so it was a combination of things.”

Coming off a 3rd-place finish at Lake Havasu, Evers is looking to become the sixth angler with four (full field) or more Elite Series wins to his credit. The others are VanDam (six), Skeet Reese (five), Mike McClelland (four), Todd Faircloth (four) and Tommy Biffle (four).

“It’d be awesome,” he said, noting his family came along on the trip this week. “I don’t think my son has been with me when I’ve won before so it’d be cool to have them up on stage tomorrow.”

He said his rotation of spots dwindled a little bit today, but he won’t hesitate to follow his instincts Sunday.

“I need to fish with an open mind and maybe find a new spot,” he said. “I’ve been idling and finding new stuff as the tournament has progressed, but didn’t do that today. I just fished places where I’ve caught them.”

It didn’t take long for him to realize the bite had slowed down. He fished through his first three stops and got a sense that it was going to be a tougher morning at least.

“I felt like if I kept my head down and kept going through them, it’d start to happen,” he said.

His 6-12 kicker was the big fish of the day – his 8-pounder on Thursday is still the lunker for the tournament.

“I never had any of those flurries today,” he added. “I’d catch one and then go a while. I just couldn’t get multiple bites from an area.”

2nd: Remitz Can Taste It

> Day 3: 5, 22-07 (15, 69-11)

After two finishes in the 100s on the West Coast swing – he earned just 1 point in those two events – Remitz is thrilled to have a shot at his second career Elite Series win. He was 3rd at Lake Guntersville earlier this year and 5th at Kentucky Lake in 2010, so he’s in his element on the Tennessee River.

Derek Remitz will be chasing his second Elite Series win tomorrow.

“All I can ask for is to have a chance to win one of these things,” he said. “I’ve had a few sniffs here and there, but I have a taste in my mouth for this one. I’ve never wanted to win one as bad as I want this one this week. I gained one spot (in the standings) today and I hope to gain one more tomorrow.”

Remitz won the first Elite Series tournament he competed in at Lake Amistad in 2007. Since then, he’s had a few Top-12s, but he doesn’t want this one to slip away.

“It would mean so much,” he said. “It’s been so long since I’ve won one. I’ve had a few opportunities along the way, but this is probably one of my best opportunities to be right there and have a chance.”

The weather is playing into his hands as he believes the warmer temperatures are prompting the schooling fish to group up tighter.

“It was another perfect day,” he said. “The bite was better for me, but I didn’t catch as many big ones as Thursday. The thing is I still have just three spots. I just can’t find anything new.

“Today was pretty busy out there. I got spun out for an hour or so trying to find different stuff and I couldn’t. I started on a place and didn’t catch anything. I went to another deal and caught them quick there. I slowly upgraded the rest of the day and caught more fish, but they were mostly 2 1/2- to 3-pounders.”

3rd: Lester Found A Mega-School

> Day 3: 5, 24-05 (15, 69-08)

Lester couldn’t be happier about the progress he made today as he looks to capture his first Elite Series win tomorrow.

“I have to feel good,” he said. “Going into today, I was 6 pounds out of the lead. Now, I’m 3 out so I cut it in half. I’m just going to catch everything I can tomorrow and see what happens.”

The increased boat traffic on the lake today – there were two local tournaments as well as the typical weekend traffic – affected some competitors, including Lester.

“Some of the weekend guys will let you in and fish and some won’t and that’s fine,” he said. “The first place I pulled up on had another (Elite Series) competitor on it, so I went to a secondary place where I hadn’t caught anything all week. Thankfully, a lot of fish had come to that place this week and they were still stacked up on the graph when I left.”

He said it’s a spot he found back in 2010 while competing in a college tournament at Kentucky Lake.

“That’s really the only other meaningful time I’ve spent on this lake,” he said. “I graphed over it in practice and knew fish would be coming to it as soon as it got hotter and the water started to warm up.

“I’m definitely going back to the spot I caught them on today. It’s one of those Kentucky Lake schools you want to find with literally hundreds of fish. If they keep biting, I might stay there all day.”

Lester has yet to catch less than 22-05 this week and he’ll look to match or exceed that number tomorrow.

“I have to believe in myself,” he said. “I’m not going to be all cocky and say it’s mine, but is it possible (that I can win)? Absolutely. We’ll see what happens. It’d be huge. It would do leaps and bounds for my career.”

4th: Something Different for Roumbanis

> Day 3: 5, 26-15 (15, 69-02)

In the four previous Elite Series events this season, Roumbanis has weighed in a little more than 82 pounds of bass over 8 days of competition. In 3 days at Kentucky Lake, he’s caught close to 70 pounds and seems to be building momentum at the right time.

While the majority of the finalists seem to be targeting the classic Tennessee River ledges at Kentucky Lake, Roumbanis is onto something else, and he’s having a blast.

Not just because he’s secured his best finish of the season this week, but because he believes he has a realistic shot at winning tomorrow. His last Elite Series win came in May 2008 at Lake Murray.

“I’ve been fishing off the radar all week and I haven’t put the hammer down on them until today,” he said. “I truly believe I can catch another 22 to 25 pounds tomorrow. I feel like I have a chance. I’m just fishing something different.”

He described his pattern as targeting areas that the fish are moving through rather than a destination they’re heading to. His key bait has been a 7-inch Optimum Baits Victory Tail swimbait.

“I’m intercepting them one at a time,” he said. “I’m not after schooling fish. It’s a process that takes all day long. I’ve felt good about it since Day 1. Tomorrow, once I get there I’m not going anywhere else. I’m excited. Every day, I feel like I learn more about it.”

Brett Hite is looking for his second Elite Series win in as many years tomorrow.

5th: Hite Stays Consistent

> Day 3: 5, 22-00 (15, 68-11)

Hite is ready to scrap the slow and steady approach that’s gotten him to this point in favor of a hammer-down strategy that could lead to a victory tomorrow. It would be his second Elite Series win in as many seasons.

“I think the potential is definitely there,” he said. “A couple of my spots have big ones on them. It’s just been day to day how many big ones pull up on those spots.”

As was the case the first 2 two days, he caught a good limit fairly early, including a 5-pounder on his first cast – and jumped around to a variety of areas, looking for potential upgrades and planning ahead.

“After I had 22, I ran all of the stuff I’d found in practice trying to figure out what area of the lake to concentrate on tomorrow and which spots to fish,” he added. “I’ve got it narrowed down to four or five spots within an 8-mile area, so I’m excited about that. I know which ones they’re biting on.”

While the morning has yielded the most activity, he’s not averse to sitting on a spot tomorrow if he’s consistently catching good fish.
