Things can happen fast at Kentucky Lake.

Whether it’s first thing in the morning on the first spot of the day or in the waning moments of the afternoon, there are periods of time where the fishing can be absolutely unrivaled. During these feeding frenzies, it’s not uncommon to hook fish on multiple casts in a row.

While most competitors who’ve fished Kentucky Lake in the past say the schools aren’t as numerous or voluminous as they’ve been in previous years, there are still opportunities to get groups of fish fired up. Timing is a big part of the equation. Luck accounts for the rest.

Tim Horton had two occasions today where he caught three fish within five casts. Brett Hite had a four-cast sequence that netted him four keepers this morning. Brandon Lester said he had 19 pounds in four casts this morning, including a double on a crankbait.

Edwin Evers also had a memorable sequence this morning, capped off by an 8-pounder that catapulted him into the lead after 2 days of BASSFest. It anchored his 27-02 stringer that made him the only angler to crack the 50-pound mark at the halfway point.

“I’m super-excited,” said Evers, who has 51-02 heading into the off day. “That 8-pounder was a blessing. That goes a long ways.”

It sure does, especially when trying to fend off the likes of Kentucky Lake ace Kevin VanDam, who caught 24-05 to take over 2nd with 47-14. When the Elite Series last visited the massive TVA lake in 2010, VanDam beat Evers by 6 1/2 pounds for the win.

Derek Remitz made a 31-spot jump into 3rd today with a tournament-best 28-01 that gave him 47-04. Horton jumped 22 spots to 4th behind a 27-01 stringer that also gave him 47-04.

Hite caught nearly the same weight as he did Wednesday – 23-06 – and his 46-11 has him in 5th for a second straight day.

Through 2 days, 50 bags in excess of 20 pounds have crossed the scales, with the tournament’s four biggest stringers coming today.

Here's a look at the Top 12 after 2 days of competition, with deficit margin from Evers indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Edwin Evers: 51-02
2. Kevin VanDam: 47-14 (3-04)
3. Derek Remitz: 47-04 (3-14)
4. Tim Horton: 47-04 (3-14)
5. Brett Hite: 46-11 (4-07)
6. Micah Frazier: 45-12 (5-06)
7. Brandon Lester: 45-03 (5-15)
8. Ott DeFoe: 44-09 (6-09)
9. Keith Combs: 43-06 (7-12)
10. Brandon Card: 42-08 (8-10)
11. Andy Montgomery: 42-06 (8-12)
12. Darold Gleason: 42-05 (8-13)

Day-1 leader Ott DeFoe caught a decent 18-02, but slipped to 8th with 44-09, 6 1/2 pounds behind Evers. Angler of the Year points leader Dean Rojas avoided missing the cut with a 16-14 bag today that has him in 49th place with 33-13.

Steve Kennedy followed up a frustrating day 1 with 23-02 today, good for a 37-spot jump into 32nd with 37-04. Brian Snowden also followed up a 14-pound bag with a 20-pound effort and he went from 68th to 45th, clinching a day off Friday.

The ledges continue to get hammered by competitors and locals alike and while some of the leaders are sharing areas at different points of the day, others have been able to keep to themselves for the most part on the 160,000-acre playing field. While local pressure figures to ramp up as the weekend approaches, another warm day might trigger more waves of fish to take up residence on off-shore locations.

The Top 50 will participate in BASSFest events tomorrow at Paris Island State Park while the rest of the field will compete at Lake Barkley in a 1-day shootout. The Top 10 will make their way back to Kentucky Lake for Saturday’s round and the Top 12 after Saturday will compete Sunday, with the winner crowned based on cumulative weight.

Evers Optimistic

> Day 2: 5, 27-02 (10, 51-02)

Evers knows there’s plenty of fishing still remaining, but he feels pretty good about what he’s found and how productive it’s been. He’s been careful about not fishing it too hard the first 2 days and he’s pretty sure he’s been the only one on the area.

“I’m not sharing water with anybody,” he said, “and I’m not fishing anything very long at all. Being a 4-day event, you’re trying to protect as much as you can. It’s going to be a big deal.”

He said not long after a 15- to 20-minute flurry during the middle of the day, he set the hook on the 8-pounder that currently stands as the big fish of the tournament.

“It was a struggle this morning,” he said. “I got on a couple good spots that had them after that. It’s fun when you can make them bite, but then they shut down and you can go hours without another.”

He said he caught a couple key upgrades this afternoon and also uncovered a couple new groups today that he hopes will produce over the weekend. He declined to divulge any details about presentations, allowing only that he’s throwing “a lot of different things.”

Kevin VanDam cut his day short, but still finds himself in 2nd place.

2nd: Slower Day for VanDam

> Day 2: 5, 24-05 (10, 47-14)

VanDam checked in early due to a fish-care concerns, but giving up a couple hours of fishing time didn’t cost him. He actually gained two positions in the standings despite a slowdown in his fishing.

“You just never know on this lake,” he said. “There was a lot less current today, so it didn’t happen as fast for me. I have no idea what’ll happen going forward, but I’ve had 2 solid days.”

Always a fan favorite who attracts some of the largest spectator crowds on the water, VanDam is already thinking ahead to what Saturday will be like.

“Saturday is a really challenging time on a lake like Kentucky Lake,” VanDam said. “Electronics are so good now that a lot of people know where to fish. You just have to do the best you can.”

3rd: Remitz Wanted 30

> Day 2: 5, 28-01 (10, 47-04)

Remitz didn’t want to jinx himself by telling anybody, but he left the dock this morning feeling pretty confident. He was nervous that he wouldn’t be able to effectively fish the few areas he’d found, but confident that if he could, the outcome would be substantial.

His nerves calmed quickly because over the first 3 hours, everything went his way. He got to hit the three spots he wanted to – and had them to himself. He fished clean and by 11 a.m., he had better than 28 pounds in his livewell, including two 6-plus pounders and a trio of 5s.

“Today, I didn’t see this coming,” he said. “I felt like the few places I found there was potential for 20 to 22 every day. I didn’t see a 28-pound bag coming. Everything just set up right. It was just one of those days. Every time I threw, it was a 4- to 6-pounder.”

He said timing has been so crucial this week, as it seems to always be when fishing current-related structure.

“It’s more of a deal if someone hasn’t fished it for a while and the schools set back up,” he said.
“These fish seem to know when there’s more than one boat over them. They’re such creatures of habit. They like to live where they like to live and now we all know where they live.”

Once he had his weight, he idled around looking for other areas for the weekend, but came up empty.

“It’s okay when I have them in the box, but it’d be nice to find one more spot to add to the rotation, but that’s the way it is,” he added.

His only regret was falling a couple pounds shy of the 30-pound mark.

“I could taste a 30-pound bag out there,” he said. “I wanted to do that so bad. Don’t get me wrong, I was pretty happy with what I caught, but I wanted to catch 30.”

4th: Horton Was Done At 11

> Day 2: 5, 27-01 (10, 47-04)

As thrilled as Horton was to catch 27 pounds today, he thinks it might take 2 more days of the same caliber stringers to claim a win this week.

“Anyone who’s in the Top 6 is going to have to have another day like we had today and then have 23 to 25 on the other day,” he said. “It could get tougher, though, with the weekend coming.”

He had two significant flurries that yielded a 7-pounder, a 6 and several 5-pounders, all coming on a Profound Outdoors Z Boss 20 and Z Boss 25 deep-diving crankbaits.

He felt like he was a couple casts away from having a truly banner day.

“You can sure catch 31 or 32 pounds here,” he said. “I was one or two bites away today.”

Once he had his weight at 11 a.m., he spent the rest of the day idling in search of other spots where fish were grouped up. He came up empty.

“I’ve never (quit that early) before and it was frustrating to have not found another school,” he said. “I eliminated some places I was going to fish, but to idle for 5 hours and not find another school. That was frustrating, but all in all it was a great day.”

Derek Remitz was bummed that he fell short of the 30-pound mark today.

5th: Hite Holding His Own

> Day 2: 5, 23-06 (10, 46-11)

Hite set a goal for himself coming into the tournament. If he could catch 20 pounds a day and have and really good day mixed in, he felt like he’d have a shot at contending for the win. So far, he’s exceeded his expectations and he’s right where he wants to be.

“To have 23 each day and if you can keep up with VanDam on this place, that’s pretty good,” he said.

He started his day on the same community spot that yielded most of his day-1 weight. He caught three keepers there, then moved on to another spot and finished his limit that weighed about 20 pounds. He made another move to a spot he hadn’t fished yet, made three casts and caught two fish, including a 6-pounder that wound up as his kicker.

“The way I’m fishing if I get a bite, a majority of the time it’s a 3-plus pounder,” he said. “A lot of these spots – there are no secret spots – you have to figure out a couple different ways to catch them. I know they’re down there, but you just have to trick them.”

He said the current that was pretty strong this morning started to subside about 10:30 and the bite dropped off as well. His goal for Saturday is to catch a similar stringer to what he’s caught so far and then go for broke Sunday.

“I’m going to put the pedal down,” he said. “My goal is that 23- to 25-pound range until the last day and then really hammer them.”

6th: Flurries Pay Off For Frazier

> Day 2: 5, 26-11 (10, 45-12)

If you boil Frazier’s first 2 days down to the time he’s actually caught fish, he thinks it would total about an hour.

“Everything I’ve caught that I weighed in has come in two windows of 30 minutes each day,” he said. “If not for those flurries, I’m screwed. I’m not catching them steadily. I get on them quick, then it’s done.”

If the Elite Series newcomer keeps catching 26-11, he won’t care how fast it happens.

“That was fun,” he said. “I’m happy with it.”

Every spot he’s fishing is also being fished by other competitors, but it’s been a case of good timing on his part.

“One I caught them good at, two other guys fished until 1 today and they only caught one keeper between them,” he said. “I got there at 1:30 and just got lucky because when I pulled up that school decided to fire up. It was a right-place-at-the-right-time scenario.”

At one point, he had a flurry during which he caught three 5 1/2- to 6-pounders within 15 minutes and a similar flurry at another spot. He wished he had more areas like that to go to, but he’s hopeful that more fish will flock to those areas during the off day.

“More fish could be coming,” he said. “It was cold during practice, but now we’ve had 2 warm days so more should be on the way.”

92nd: Moral Victory for Walker

> Day 2: 5, 18-03 (6, 20-15)

Wednesday was a taxing day mentally for David Walker, who has a slew of experience at Kentucky Lake. He struggled all day, winding up with one fish for less than 3 pounds.

He rebounded today with 18-03 and is hoping to redeem himself at Barkley on Friday so he can build on what he found today.

“It was a moral victory,” he said. “I’ll take them when I can get them. I had a chance to do better, too, but I jumped off another substantial fish. It wouldn’t have mattered, but it was nice to get some bites because the first few hours were just as miserable as yesterday.”

He said he waged a mental battle in his head on Wednesday once he realized the offshore game wasn’t going his way. He considered going to the bank, but knew if he did he’d just be thinking about the other ledge spots where the fish could be biting.

“It was a tough day to take, especially when you’re not catching them,” he said. “I knew the bite was going on. I just couldn’t get it going.”

Today, he went in the opposite direction and tried to use the day as a practice day of sorts in case he qualified to come back to fish Saturday.

“Honestly, going to Barkley tomorrow, I’m excited,” he said. “I haven’t been there in years, but I’m glad it happened in this order instead of catching 18 pounds the first day and 2 pounds today. Now, it makes it easier mentally because if I make it back, I’ll feel like I have something to build on.”

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 124 anglers, 91 limits (3 fewer than day 1), 2 fours, 11 threes, 7 twos, 7 ones, 6 zeroes (1 more than day 1).

> Davy Hite weighed in early so he could fly home to South Carolina in order to watch son Peyton graduate from high school. He caught 18-06 (matching his Wednesday catch) and made the cut in 33rd place with 36-12.

> Chris Zaldain was able to fish his preferred spot today and it yielded 19-01, but it wasn't enough to help him avoid having to fish at Lake Barkley tomorrow. Meanwhile, Brent Chapman has benefited from an out-of-the-way spot that's produced enough to earn him spot in the Top 50.
