There’s no telling how many brush piles litter the bottom of Lake Eufaula. Hundreds, maybe thousands, are strewn across the lake’s terrain, strategically placed as fish attractors for various times of the year.

This week, they’re all the rage at the FLW Tour stop at Eufaula.

It’s just not any brush pile, though. For as many as there are, only a small percentage seem to be holding above-average sized bass and it didn’t take long for some of the competitors to pinpoint their locations.

So far, Troy Morrow has played the brush pile (or offshore structure) game better than anyone as he brought in 18-01 to push his 2-day total to 39-09 and take over the lead at the midway point.

“It was a tougher day for me,” he said. “It’s good that I had a late boat number because I needed it.”

Morrow swapped places with Clent Davis, who followed up his 22-09 day-1 effort with 15-12 to give him 38-05.

Lurking in 3rd is Randy Haynes, who’s seeking to win at Eufaula for the second time in 3 years. The offshore specialist bagged 17-10 and has 36-07. Canadian Jeff Gustafson moved up to 4th by catching all of his fish shallow for the second straight day. He tacked on 16-15 and has 35-11, 5 ounces ahead of rookie Zack Birge, who sacked 15-09 and is 5th with 35-06.

Here's a look at the Top 10 at the halfway point of competition, with deficit margin from Morrow indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Troy Morrow: 39-09
2. Clent Davis: 38-05 (1-04)
3. Randy Haynes: 36-07 (3-02)
4. Jeff Gustafson: 35-11 (3-14)
5. Zack Birge: 35-06 (4-03)
6. Adrian Avena: 34-13 (4-12)
7. Bryan Thrift: 34-11 (4-14)
8. David Fritts: 32-10 (6-15)
9. Scott Martin: 32-08 (7-01)
10. Derrick Snavely: 32-01 (7-08)

After day 1 saw four pros sack 20-plus pounds, only one managed to break the 19-pound barrier on Friday. That was Darrell Davis, who rode his 19-01 stringer up to 17th from 82nd after catching just 9-03 Thursday.

Angler of the Year points leader Wesley Strader will add to his lead this week after making his fourth straight cut in 16th with 28-07. He’s one of six anglers who were in the Top 11 in points coming into this week who made the Top-20 cut.

Anthony Gagliardi made the biggest move today to secure a spot among the Top 20. He caught 17-09 to jump 30 spots to 15th with 29-03. Peter Thliveros moved up 22 slots to 18th, thanks to a 15-plus pound bag.

Ramie Colson, Jr., dropped 11 spots to 14th after catching an 8-09 limit, which was less than half of his day-1 weight.

Conditions were cloudy and breezy for most of Friday before a heavy downpour and thunderstorm moved in later in the afternoon. The intense storm chased some of the anglers in the later flight off the water early. The additional rain may entice some in the Top 20 to check some shallow water areas Saturday to see if any fish have repopulated certain stretches that they vacated after the water level fell over the last week.

More clouds and storms will be in the Eufaula area Saturday with temperatures topping out at 89 degrees and light southeast wind.

The field will be cut to the Top 10 after day 3 with the winner crowned Sunday based on highest cumulative weight.

Morrow has burned through more than 75 percent of the spots he wanted to fish in the tournament so far.

Morrow Upgraded Throughout the Day

> Day 2: 5, 18-01 (10, 39-09)

Morrow said his day didn’t go as planned, but it still resulted in him taking over the lead as he aims to secure his second Top-10 finish of the season.

After losing a 5-pounder right away, he had a small limit by 9:30 targeting brush piles that he’d fished Thursday. He eventually had to change baits and run through more of his spots than he’d hoped.

“I’d been catching them on a crankbait, but I had to change that up,” he said. “I kept pecking away until I had enough to know I’d make it to tomorrow.”

He’s spending most of his time on the southern portion of lake and is looking forward to having fewer boats to compete with to get on certain areas in the morning.

“There were brush-pile fishermen today that weren’t brush-pile fishermen yesterday,” he said. “It got really crowded.”

He had a good flurry going late in the afternoon, but the approaching storm prompted him to cut his day short by an hour as he wanted to be back at the ramp before the worst of the storm hit. With more clouds in the forecast tomorrow, he’s still figuring out the proper adjustments to make for the conditions.

“The clouds today definitely changed something,” he said. “That might be why I had to change baits.”

After starting the event with roughly 100 spots that had 2-pounders or better on them, he’s down to 22 places he hasn’t fished yet. He said he’ll go back to some places he rushed through today on Saturday.

“I was hoping to have more than that after today but it was a grind and I had to fish more than I wanted to,” he added.

2nd: Davis Puzzled After Fast Start

> Day 2: 5, 15-12 (10, 38-05)

After the first 2 hours today, Davis was convinced he was on track to match or exceed his day-1 output. He caught 15-plus pounds in short order, then experienced a lull that virtually lasted the rest of the day.

“It was the craziest thing I've ever seen,” he said. “I killed them the first 2 hours and then I couldn’t buy a bite. I have no answers as to why. I caught plenty of 14 1/2-inchers later on. I don’t know why. I thought it’d be another good day, but it went straight down hill.”

He opted to slow down when the bites started to tail off and he thinks that was a mistake.

“There are two ways to play the game we’re playing now,” he said. “You can slow down and try to milk an area or you can run and gun. I made the wrong call. Some of the places I went to I was fishing behind people and either they caught one or harassed them enough into shutting down.”

He’s still encouraged by being in 2nd halfway through the tournament and he’ll continue with the same strategy that’s worked so far. He said his four biggest fish so far have fallen for a particular bait that he’s not ready to divulge yet. He’s even taken steps to conceal the bait on the water so competitors don’t eyeball it.

“I’m going to throw big baits tomorrow because I’m trying to win,” he said. “I’d rather finish 20th than 2nd. I’m not fishing for 2nd this week. It’s going to be good or bad. There’s no in between for me.”

3rd: Haynes Still Figuring Things Out

> Day 2: 5, 17-10 (10, 36-07)

At one point today, Haynes was reduced to thinking about what he needed to catch in order to earn a check this week. It was a fleeting thought, though, as he was in between morning and afternoon flurries that have put him back in contention at the lake that produced his first and only Tour victory.

“I don’t have anything figured out the way I want to,” he said. “I’m still kind of lost at this point.”

That may be partly true, but the humble Haynes is among the leaders for a reason – he’s got something figured out about the offshore fish at Eufaula.

“I got fortunate today and found one of those small wads of bass,” he said. “A lot of them are sitting in those trees or on flats or are around brush. I just got fortunate to get a couple fired up.”

He said he picked off a few single fish during the middle of the day as he tried to manage the area he was on.

“Two years ago, I could pretty much go where I wanted to, but it seems like somebody is on everything this year,” he said. “I sat on one spot today hoping to milk it, but that didn’t work. I didn’t want to leave it because I was afraid someone would pull in on it, but I finally had to abandon it.”

He felt like the cloud cover impacted how the fish were setting up in the spots he fished compared to Thursday’s sun-soaked conditions.

“What hurt me was the sun wasn’t high,” he said. “It didn’t push them on those certain sweet spots. These fish were really scattered out over a big area. When they’re like that and not on a sweet spot, you can’t get them to eat.”

A deep-diving crankbait and other moving baits are part of his arsenal so far and his biggest fish today was just shy of 4 pounds.

“I’m not catching any real big fish,” he said. “It doesn’t surprise me based on the way I’m fishing. I’m not doing many brush piles like some of these guys.”

4th: Skinny Water For Gustafson

> Day 2: 5, 16-15 (10, 35-11)

Gustafson is the outlier among the leaders as he’s caught the lion’s share of his fish out of shallow water, a strategy that was thought to be a quick means to a paycheck only this week.

“I’ve done a little better than I expected to,” he said. “I haven’t weighed in any small fish. I’ve had all nice fish each day. I had a decent practice, but catching them all shallow it’s all pretty random. It’s been one here and one there.

“I’ve seen that episode play out before with a jerkbait or crankbait and it doesn’t always work out on tournament days. A few stretches have been better than I thought they’d be. I also found a couple brush piles and caught a couple nice fish off them. I’ve just been running and gunning.”

He’s spent most of his time on the southern part of the lake and hasn’t caught any fish deeper than 4 feet of water so far.

He had a good limit pretty early on Thursday, but it took him until 10 today to hit the 14-pound mark.

“With the overcast skies and wind today, I thought it would be better, but I only caught 10 keepers today,” he said. “I have one 500- to 600-yard stretch that I hit a little bit Thursday that I didn’t go to today because I was happy with the weight I had. The only thing is I’m don’t know if the stuff I’m fishing is going to replenish.”

6th: Best Bites Came Late for Avena

> Day 2: 5, 14-03 (10, 34-13)

The running and gunning continued today for Adrian Avena, who started the day tied for 3rd, but quickly realized it wasn’t going to be near as easy as it was Thursday.

“It’s tough to expect to catch 20 (pounds) in any tournament,” he said. “Yesterday, I was really fortunate and I had it really quick. Today, reality sank in. I knew if I didn’t get that morning bite, it was going to be tough and it was just a grind. Today was one of those deals where it was tough on me.”

He caught eight keepers today and had one close to 6 pounds anchoring his bag. At 2 p.m., he still had just three fish in the livewell, but managed to catch his two best fish between then and check-in at 3:15.

All of the fish he’s caught have been deeper than 10 feet, but with the additional rain this afternoon, he’s tempted to sample the shallow water tomorrow.

“We’ve had a lot of rain between yesterday and today and the lake is coming up,” he said. “These fish move with the water so I may give it a couple hours in the morning.”

Randy Haynes says he hasn't cracked the Eufaula code yet this week, yet finds himself in 3rd place after 2 days.

8th: Fritts Feeling Confident

> Day 2: 5, 16-07 (10, 32-10

David Fritts is convinced that if there’s any uptick in current generation Saturday that he could bring in the biggest bag of the event, thanks to an ace in the hole spot he’s known about for years.

“I think I’m going to catch them,” he said. “I’m going to gamble some tomorrow. I feel like I’m going to make a good move in the morning. I’m going somewhere I haven’t been yet.

“There’s one place I don’t ever fish here unless I make the cut. They live there and if they move water, there’s 25 pounds there. It’s something that doesn’t show up on GPS and I’ve had it to myself all these years. They may not be there but if they are, I’ll catch em.”

He mentioned having 22 spots identified coming into the tournament, but has only fished six so far, in part because of the fishing pressure the south end of the lake has gotten.

“The fish are a little different (from 2 years ago),” he said. “I really haven’t had a day as good as what I had in practice so it’ll be nice to be go out and pitch around and not have boats all around.”

He caught 16 pounds fairly quickly today and then went looking for new areas. A prototype Berkley crankbait, created on a 3-D printer, has been a key producer so far.

“I’ve got to go easy on them,” he said. “I only have a couple of them, but they’re working. I’m the only one who has them.”

77th: Canterbury Gambled Shallow

> Day 2: 3, 5-06 (8, 19-05)

Scott Canterbury came into the event feeling confident. Catching 13-15 on day 1 only reinforced the good vibes, but a decision to fish shallow for the first 90 minutes today backfired and he couldn’t recover and ended his run of Top-40 finishes that dated back to last year.

He’ll undoubtedly tumble out of the Top 10 in points after coming into the week in 6th place.

“I thought I’d have a good week,” he said. “I guess I had too much going on. I was in the first flight today and gambled by fishing shallow for a bit. I never caught anything and then I went deep, but I guess I’d found more than what I thought I did because Fritts and Morrow were on stuff I’d found.”

Instead of trying to get into a rotation, he opted to run to other places. After catching a dozen keepers on Thursday, he triggered five bites today and got three in the boat.

“I had a big one hit a Pop-R up shallow, but it didn’t eat it,” he added.

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 149 anglers, 100 limits (2 fewer than yesterday), 15 fours, 14 threes, 11 twos, 5 ones, 4 zeroes (1 more than yesterday).

> With several anglers withdrawing from Tour competition recently, FLW adjusted the payouts this week to reflect those departures. Places 21-60 received $9,922, a reduction of $78 per place. The $4,000 checks places 61-65 received in previous full-field events were eliminated. The winner’s share will remain $100,000 (or $125,000 if Ranger Cup-eligible), but the rest of the Top 20 finishers will see reduced paybacks as a result of the 149-boat field versus the 154 that started the season. Second place will receive $29,789 and 20th will collect $11,909.

> Jay Yelas made it a point to not fish the same way he did in 2013 at Lake Eufaula. His change paid off this week with a 38th-place finish. For Luke Clausen, it was an uphill battle from the start as he battled a stomach bug through practice and had little to go on heading into the tournament.
